What's it like to be Paul Valente?

It's easy to say "Don't be results oriented," or "Don't be emotional." But neither of these things tell you what to actually do. For me, the key is to attach my emotions to something other than results. In the case of poker, it's the decision process. When I properly consider every option and all the information available, I feel good. When I don't, I feel bad. So it's an emotional feedback loop, but it's independent of the results.

I do take pride in long term results, and get some sense of my worth as a poker player. When my winrate takes a hit from a 300 BB downer and a 20k hand sideslide, it affects my mood and my assessment of my own ability. But that's because longer term results are more significant, so at a certain point they become relevant. The fact is, though, that you can really only know how good you are by being really good and understanding the game on a fundamental level. So it's sort of a catch-22 where you only know how good you are once you're not so concerned with the answer.

isn't the catch 22 answer:
"cheat your way out of it"

I mean both yosarian and the crash pilot cheated in some kind of way to get out of the war.

Well, being a superuser would make it easy to know that you were going to crush the game without requiring a deep understanding of poker.

For those who play poker for a living AND has had "real-life" jobs previously:

Are you more or less happy on average now?

Do you often regret going pro?

If you had to guess, for how long do you think you will be a poker pro?

Being your own boss alone makes it worthwhile. I'll be a pro as long as I can beat the game, and will very likely move overseas if it becomes impossible to play online in the States.

Much happier and I never regret going pro, but I think that's more a comment on my old job than anything else.

If I had to guess, I'd say 6 more months or so.

HAHA, I was going to post I wonder how La Peste, Sethy and Oink feel...johnnyrocket posted earlier ITT that Wolfram was a father figure thats I said that.

Oh and congrats on your stock market score. My bestfriend's (is that ghey to say if you're a dude?) brother works for RIM and he got 500 Shares for the first 4 years when he started at what the price was (~$40), and he's probably invested some of his and I imagine it'll be similar to what you got...nicely done!

about the same

occasionally, but not often.. i do miss certain aspects of the working world, and tbh i dont really care to introduce myself as a poker pro when i meet new people, but not a big deal in any case...

2-3 year tops
09-07-2009 , 05:47 PM
I worked at Ben+Jerry's for a year and a half. The free ice cream was sweet, but I have absolutely no desire to enter the working world anymore.

To answer the 3rd question ... forever? I enjoy playing and I make more money than 99.99% of 22 year old college dropouts, so why not?
