Probably the best lesson in golf I ever received was when my pro told me that I had to have a swing to go to when my game was off. When I am in trouble and have to hit a shot that I know can get on the green, I can move it back in my stance, and trap the hell out of it all the way around the course. It isn't pretty, but it is effective.
As far as wanting more "lag" in your swing,or having the hands leading the club head at impact. Yes, it is much easier with 7 iron through wedge because you have more margin for error. Lag is a hard thing to teach because the aspect of timing comes into play. You will definitely pick up a lot of yardage, but your accuracy will suffer until you get your timing down.
Once you get the concept of lag down, you will experience such fun things as getting the club stuck behind you on the downswing or flipping it. The former causes a block, the latter causes my nemesis, Mr. Snappy. There is something to be said for playing municipal golf courses where you can hit it 2 fairways over and still have a shot into the green.
thanks Verno - I have a really really good coach, he just makes things easy to understand and emphasizes the theory of things, so that I can self correct. It's in my nature to want to understand the theory behind whatever I'm doing, so we get along well, and as a result I am probably a much better swing analyst and have a technically "good" looking swing compared to most people that are barely breaking 100 :P
Usually when I'm out playing I really am not just trying to shoot the lowest score possible, but practice situational stuff, like actually having a target to shoot for with driver / 3 hybrid. It's amazing how easy it is to trick yourself on the driving range into thinking you are accurate. I know like in my round yesterday, that its sort of not possible to even evaluate some aspects of how my play / swing is that day. I mean I hit 3 fairways all day, so I was consistently hitting 6 irons and stuff around trees and out of thick rough, I had so few irons from the fairway it would be pretty hard to say how I was swinging the irons. Likewise hitting disgusting recovery shots towards the green led to short siding myself and having messy short game situations all day long, so I was pretty much always in trouble. I think I could have shot lower hitting 6 iron off every tee shot, but what fun / practice is that?
