1000 BB bankroll 1000 BB bankroll

02-25-2011 , 07:40 PM
Hey guys, I am completely reevaluating my game. I am reading books, reading this forum, and watching tons of videos. I am not going to play another hand of poker until I am mentally ready. I have decided that I am going to use the 1000 BB bankroll rule. I know this may seem excessive, but that is what I feel comfortable with. I know short handed fixed limit hold em can be a very swingy game. I will make a deposit when I have 2K saved up, and start playing 1-2 6max. I am just looking for some feedback and suggestions from some experienced players. I already know that no matter how big a bankroll, a losing player will eventually go broke. For the record, I use PT3. Thanks for reading this guys, I look forward to your replies.

I think I missed your question

I read your post 3 times and can't find any questions, so I will respond to your statements.

1. Hey guys, I am completely reevaluating my game.
--Good for you

2. I am reading books, reading this forum, and watching tons of videos
--Excellent way to learn the game

3. I am not going to play another hand of poker until I am mentally ready
--This sounds horrible. Playing is still the best way to learn.

4. I have decided that I am going to use the 1000 BB bankroll rule
Whatever floats your boat. I use 100BB sometimes and 2000BB other times.

5. I know this may seem excessive, but that is what I feel comfortable with.
--Whatever you are comfortable with is important to us.

6. I know short handed fixed limit hold em can be a very swingy game.
--Swongs, they are one thing.

7. I will make a deposit when I have 2K saved up, and start playing 1-2 6max.
--If you haven't played 1/2 6 max yet, you should start at .25/50 or .50/1.00 and get your feet wet for 10,000 hands or so. The 1/2 game on Stars is full of SN grinders that understand the game, but play so many tables that they make mistakes. You won't be able to recognize these mistakes until you have played with them for quite a while. Also, the aggression factor increases dramatically between .50/1.00 and 1/2.

8. I am just looking for some feedback and suggestions from some experienced players.
You are welcome.

9. I already know that no matter how big a bankroll, a losing player will eventually go broke.
--This is not true. Rakeback can turn a losing playing into a winning player. Just make sure you spend your money on cash bonuses instead of 55" flat screen TV's.

10. For the record, I use PT3.
--That or HEM works great. One of the best players on this forum doesn't use anything, so it is totally player dependent. I have PT3 also and I love it.

11. Thanks for reading this guys, I look forward to your replies
--Again, you are welcome.

If you had said, "I think I'm a 0.75BB/100 winner in 50k hands, that my variance at 6m is about 18BB/100, and I'm only willing to have a Y% RoR, thus my BR is X" we could have a discussion about whether or not you were being too conservative or not. Picking a BR out of thin air is meaningless. Not knowing your history as a winner at 1/2 6m, how could any of us have an opinion? We'd also need to know if you could replace your current online BR with other monies, and whether that would be painful to you.

There are a ton of good threads on bankroll here and on the other limit forums. The time spent understanding the concept will teach you a bunch about variance and the long run in LHE.

Thank you so much (again) for the reply, this is what I am looking for.

Could you please direct me to some of these post? Thank you kindly.

I usually use google as a first shot. Maybe the search terms like this?
bankroll site:twoplustwo.com
Also, the Advanced Forum Search does a nice job. You can limit results to posts with bankroll in the title and on limit forums...

I know Xhad's post is great.
Leader did the advanced course here.
Here's another milestone on Small Stakes, more aimed at rake traps, esp. live.
The famous ArronW, of 2+2 magazine fame from micros.
Here's me on a rant and a previous, more mathy, rant.
Here's a bit about variance and certainty.

You're certainly not the only person to come on and ask the BR question exactly like you did. The math geek in me gets frustrated sometimes; maybe we should have a certification test before you can use official statistics terms on the forums. Good luck.

1000bb is a great idea for the main limit you want to play but you need much less for taking shots IMO.

Thanks for the links, I am going to have to read some of those a few more times to fully grasp the concept(s).

As of right now, I have no plans of taking shots. And to prevent me from shot taking and tilting, I am going to use the Stars feature that won't allow me to play above my chosen limit. IMO, that is the best feature a poker site has ever added to their software.

I'd prefer if tilting spew monkeys could more easily jump into higher stakes games

I always keep at least 1000 and prefer 1500 actually. I tend to go on 2-3 day benders where I play worse than normal. I think its a good idea to have way more than you need. The cushion makes the spew aftermath much easier to deal with.

As long as we're all down with the idea that this has no mathematical basis and has potentially a large opportunity cost, the idea of playing in your comfort zone is great. Xhad's scheme for moving up and down limits (esp. modified for 1/2 Kelley) would be a much more rational way to play, though large differences in earn between limits would tend to make you jump more often than you like.
02-26-2011 , 12:36 PM
If you're trying to move up in stakes, 1000BB is too conservative. If you're trying to stay at a limit and cashout regularly 1000BBs is not enough.
02-26-2011 , 12:38 PM
As long as you're willing to move down there's no need for such a high bankroll. If I have 500BB for one limit I'll play the limit above that one until I drop below 500BB. For example, I'll play 5/10 until my bankroll drops below $3000 (500BB at 3/6), in which case I'll move back down to 3/6.

If my BR reaches several buy ins above $5000, I'll take a shot at 10/20. That's only happened one time, and unfortunately it didn't last long. I'm still on a roller coaster of up and down swings at 5/10, and due to several emergency personal cash outs I've been stuck there for a while.

Let me state that this bankroll strategy is for semi pro or recreational players only, it doesn't apply for someone whose only source of income is poker. In that case not only would you need a 1000BB bankroll, but you would also need 6 months to preferably a year in reserve living expenses.

Never said it was optimal. It just makes me feel better.

In the end, this is more important than anything else.
02-26-2011 , 07:19 PM
you'll play the best poker when you have your entire roll on the table.
02-26-2011 , 07:20 PM
I try to keep one buy in for the next lower limit in my sock.
02-26-2011 , 07:32 PM
i try to cash out and rub my winnings all over my titties as much as possible. so I run with a 400-500BB roll usually.

real reason I keep my online roll so low, putting together a live roll.
02-27-2011 , 04:24 PM
I keep 200BB but I only 2-table and I work full-time so replenishing it is no big deal. Main focus is to get out of the rake trap limits ASAP. Once I reach 3/6 I'll keep closer to 500BB.
02-28-2011 , 09:04 PM
Great, 5 min of my life I can not get back. This statement should have just gone on facebook.
03-03-2011 , 02:26 AM
I take back everything I said about 200BB being ok because I 2-table. Little did I know I could lose 160BB in 450 hands.

2000 BB seems like a better roll size.
03-03-2011 , 02:30 AM
but 2000BB feels so much better being rubbed all over your tittays than in a pokerstars account

Unless your game is .01/.02, then it feels better in your pokerstars account because rubbing a bunch of quarters on your nipples will lead to chaffing and could cause permanent damage to your man nips.
03-03-2011 , 02:02 PM
theres no such thing as .01/.02 LHE
