Should Saudi Arabia allow women to drive? Should Saudi Arabia allow women to drive?

11-10-2013 , 02:41 PM
Some 'valid' arguments are made against immediately legalising driving for women.

1) They have no driving experience

2) Most women in Saudi Arabia wear a burka which obscures the peripheral vision, making women dangerous drivers.

There is a lot of butthurt going down from Saudi men judging by user comments in these Youtube videos.

I heard it's bad for the ovaries.

We should coddle the misogynists so their feeling aren't hurt, but still let those ladies drive.

Of course women should be able to drive in Saudi Arabia, let me this take a step further tho. Women in S.A should also be allowed in a government capacity much like in Kuwait and other middle east nations.

I have been following these protests in S.A, brave women are getting behind the wheel and its a wonderful thing to see. I hope this movement gains momentum.

Note how early in the video as the women is driving alone, we see male passengers in another vehicle show support for the female driver.

what saudi men have to say..

Quote:
"Saudis women they're don't need to drive coz our women like a queens but some of Americans women just for sale and paying like animals & they're bitchs or drunks or lesbians what the hell is that , oh God lead them to right way"

"You want our women be bitches like you?! You the number one ****ery of making porn movie s So do not talk about our women"

"Did u try to ask any saudi !! Why we not allow our women driving until now ? Is the same rezon we ll not lit one "gay" people judge us ... ! Better to start read about our religion & our habit before talking .... About driving"

"women kiled in seria and burma and you are care about women driving in saudia go to haill usa"

"Hi Ellen, You can make fun of reality TV shows, fb photos, dating website but please stay away from people's cultures and social norms. You making fun of a social reality in another part of the world without living in it or reading books and understanding the logic behind it (if any) is disrespectful to the people belonging to that culture. Now probably most Arabs who used to watch your show and enjoy it are angry or hurt. Also, you made fun of "Sheikh" which is also disrespectful.1287offended"

"I have heard that you, Americans, do not you wash after # # # in the bathroom do not you wash the body after sex and the men throw his semen to your facee . Life of this very nasty it's forbidden in Islam and called an insult and enslavement of women
"

Well, why are you asking us? There's no chance anybody is seriously gonna think that Saudi women shouldn't be allowed to drive. C'mon.

If we allow women to drive, they might go crazy at the wrong time of the month and cause massive crashes. We can't take that risk.

You are all nuts!!
The question should be: should women be allowed to drive in the rest of the world?
I say No

Do Saudi men chauffeur their women around to do all their shopping?

You know you're stretching for reasons to justify your stupid sexism when you pull out the:

Like Falcon and Nichlemm said, womens ovaries are very delicate and driving may damage them, they need men to chaffeur their delicate bodies on bumpy roads! They also turn crazy once a month making them unsuitable drivers. These are good reasons!

Also, imagine if a young woman gets into an accident exposing some bare skin to sexually starved Saudi men responding on the scene. Exposed skin is considered indecent in Islam and could lead to rape. These rapes could become an epidemic, leaving Saudi men few women to marry, as rape victims are considered damaged goods and are often shunned or even punished in Saudi society.

I hope that makes things more clear.

Alright, just to clarify, my intensions with the thread is to point and laugh at misogynists and bigots justifying the unjustifiable. It just blows my mind that a large part of the Saudi population still ardently defend these laws.

If most people living there want to then yes. If most people don't then no.

Just as I would gladly climb back into the womb if permitted, I would gladly climb on board with a Saudi lady at the wheel.

I think the underlying question here is to what extent should we impose our values onto other societies. I'm against stopping genocides, but not so much for imposing other values of our society, for example unlimited corporate campaign contributions. What would be the litmus test for the point at which we feel the need to impose our values on another society/culture? Which rights do you think are universal as compared to culturally elective?

I would be inclined to respect their decision on this point. I'm against the ban but I just don't think it is my place to try to actively change it. I don't agree with kingdom's either but I wouldn't pick up a gun and go fight them over their being one. I don't see much talk about the fact that they are a kingdom, which is a far far greater assault against freedom than the ban on women drivers.

There will always be a large number of people who defend the status quo regardless what it is.
