No, my job is more like coming up with and implementing any sort of project that could save the mill money and/or increase production. There is some chemistry involved, but not too much in all honesty. For example, one project that I've looked into is putting in some solar panels to help mitigate our electricity cost. We're at 38 N and have 300 sunny days a year, but at this point I don't think we'd get approved. We typically need 3 years payback on projects and solar panels wouldn't be close to that, although it would be a lot more reliable than most projects. If it gets to 5-7 years payback I might pitch it, since it would be a good pilot project and costs would probably come down. And it would be terrific press.
You wouldn't ever guess what our electricity bill is per month. We're a small mill, we make about 300 tons of paper per day. A large paper mill might make 1500 tons/day. Seriously, guess.
