lol, I certainly hate to have suddenly turned into DO YOU EVEN DEGREES BRO, especially since I consider getting that degree probably the biggest mistake I've made in my life. But I guess that's what spank brings out in me.

My wife has a PhD. Not a mistake in the life sense, but way -$EV.

That's in English though. Chemistry PhD should have a little more broad applications.

I'd rather be wrong not believing you than be gullible here.

Nah, if it touches your bank account they'll cut your food stamps.

Nah you only report personal savings once at the beginning.

It's true, it employed me for 6 years professionally and got me a job proctoring exams my second time through school.

Getting a science PhD probably isn't -$EV if you know what you're interested in and passionate about it. But its awful if you were like me and had no idea what you wanted to do with your life and were just kind of floating around doing it because you couldn't think of anything better to do. About half of my cohort was like me and the other half were driven and knew what they wanted and were passionate about what they were doing. The people who were most successful were predictably of the driven and ambitious group.

Story in the LA Times today about cheating in India. You should proctor there. Big money in it if you're flexible. Big need if you're an ideologue.

Keeed,

What's your job? Don't be embarrassed to tell me, I'm a roof jockey.
07-17-2015 , 11:11 PM
I'm a process engineer at a paper mill
07-17-2015 , 11:12 PM
Have you gone nose dead?
07-17-2015 , 11:13 PM
Not a pulp mill, 100% recycled.

Nice. Sounds kinda like an industrial engineer, but I assume you're more into the gooey chemically part of the paper technology?

No, my job is more like coming up with and implementing any sort of project that could save the mill money and/or increase production. There is some chemistry involved, but not too much in all honesty. For example, one project that I've looked into is putting in some solar panels to help mitigate our electricity cost. We're at 38 N and have 300 sunny days a year, but at this point I don't think we'd get approved. We typically need 3 years payback on projects and solar panels wouldn't be close to that, although it would be a lot more reliable than most projects. If it gets to 5-7 years payback I might pitch it, since it would be a good pilot project and costs would probably come down. And it would be terrific press.

You wouldn't ever guess what our electricity bill is per month. We're a small mill, we make about 300 tons of paper per day. A large paper mill might make 1500 tons/day. Seriously, guess.

Spoiler:
nope, you're low, guess again.
Spoiler:
ahahahhahahahahah no
Spoiler:
$350k/month

What's it like to waste 9-13 years of your life studying to do something as ****ty as working in a paper mill?
07-17-2015 , 11:31 PM
It's good, I really enjoy it
07-17-2015 , 11:39 PM
Does your company pollute the landscape with dioxins? There are a lot of old paper mills around here, most of them sitting on land so contaminated that nobody is willing to do anything with them so the owners just abandon them and let them rot in the hope that they die before somebody figures out a way to legally hold them personally responsible for the cleanup.

I'm going to place all that blame on you.

Are you in Sacramento? If you are in Cali, there's no way I can't get you less than 5 years and maybe less than 3 years payback and with the right financing/lease, probably cash flow positive from day one.

I wouldn't have guessed $350k, but I've seen plenty of industrial electric bills.
