This was a while ago at a $10/$0.20 table and I don't have the hand history for it, but this is what happened:

Guy on the button limped in, and I check behind on the big blind. I draw 3 and improve to something like 6532...might have even been a pat 8, can't remember. Guy on the button........waits.....waits......and times out and stands pat (I believe on Pokerstars you automatically stand pat if you time out). I bet out, assuming he mis-patted his hand, and suddenly he comes to life and raises me. I called to the end and he showed #1.

Am I an idiot for falling for this?

Villain is definitely an idiot for doing it. The sum total of his sneakiness is to make up 1SB that he threw away by limping in the first place.

old trick, When he raises after the time-out pat but then raises you're c-bet and now patting the next street alarm bells should go off that he on a pat 7, just take a note and if you see his range for that timeout pat back raise is pretty much the nuts you'll know what to do, however if he is savvy he might turn such a play into a bluff, watch and see how he plays over a given sample size and you'll have a better idea how to deal with him.

It'll take too long to get a decent sample size to truly know the % of bluffs/nuts.

But the sure thing is that they're unbelievably polarised, so if you think they're capable of a bluff, you can just call down, only raising with the nuts (or a bluff) yourself.

People do weird sh*t, don't worry about it too much. As long as you don't start doing it yourself, it won't cost you a significant amount in the long run.

I'm not worried about it, just wanted to to tell the story because it seems a tad "unsportsmanlike" to me.

You have to pay him off to allow him to do such a bad play again and protect yourself for future bluffs like this
