Defending against a cash in was the only thing left that was built up to be a shocking moment instantly giving credibility and elevating whichever person was able to do it. I didn't think they could possible waste the only thing they had left on making Cena look even stronger.
When you factor in them having 9 months to wait patiently for a good spot for Sandow to cash in (so they weren't running out of time or anything) and the fact that they did it to someone that actually gets buried by it (instead of it being an already established star), it made absolutely zero sense on any level for it to happen.
It's somehow the most absurd booking decision they've had in a long, long time. Their handling of Ziggler was tough to top, but they did it.
I can’t understand anyone that was okay with what happened last night. Sandow beat the hell out of Cena’s already injured arm then starts a match that Cena was not ready for. Then during the match, Cena kicks out of both of Sandow’s finishers and powers out of a crossface on the bad arm.
It says that Sandow is inferior to a literally one-armed Cena who had no time to prepare for the match. As Jim said, the “successfully defense of a surprise MITB cash in” could have been a career defining moment for somebody. Instead, it’s a minor feather in the cap of a guy who has dozens of bigger accomplishments.

He didn’t have to drop the title.
Picture this: During the match, somebody (preferably some NXT guy but could be some repackaged WWE guy not doing anything) saves Cena and causes a DQ. He talks about how he’s a big Cena fan and doesn’t want to see him lose the belt.
Sandow loses the MITB but doesn’t look weak, Cena can act indignant saying that he didn’t need or want any help, the WHC retains its elevated status by staying on Cena, and you elevate a brand new person as an auxiliary in a main event feud.
