I'll probably order it, but it sucks that the ROH title won't be defended on the 10th anniversary show. Briscoes/Young Bucks is obviously going to be great though. Also ROH has a new 2-disc Summer of Punk DVD that looks absolutely amazing, I'm probably going to order that too.

Hey man, thanks for replying. That DVD set is classic as CM Punk was gold then but when was he not?

Even thought title is not on the line, I still love the main event. Its gonna be great.

The promos the Briscoes have been cutting lately are so awesome. Been watching them and Punk since 2002.

Really interested in where the Chikara/ROH storyline is headed.
Eddie Kingston is confirmed to make an appearance, but it's not known what he's supposed to do.

i will not be ordering, but only because I WILL BE THERE.

2nd row on the floor. been to just about every NYC show in the last 4 years.

i am very disappointed that we wont get a title defense this time. i hope we finally get the davey/steen title match at the next nyc show.

not having a title match on this show is criminal. davey vs steen is almost a certainty for the next NYC show. hf

I really like the main event even thought it means the title can't be defended. Should be lenghty and epic.

I guess deleting your blog in the op wasn't enough.

Posted quick thoughts on each match. Really solid show, nothing mindblowing but very good.

Great, great show. Steen is the best villain ever. Briscoes vs. Young Bucks was awesome. The main event was incredible. It didn't bother me one bit that there was no world title defense.

Here are my general thoughts:

For some background, other than a couple shows in the very early history of RoH and the matches posted in the All-Time Draft and the Videos thread, I have very little exposure to RoH. I actually wanted to go to this show because I've recently got back into wrestling a little bit and have heard so many good things about RoH, but couldn't find anyone else that wanted to go.

Positives:

As far as their collection of talent, amazingly athletic and ring savvy, I was constantly impressed by what I was seeing in terms of combining technical ability with innovation and high impact maneuvers.

Kevin Steen is a great character, and even without a whole lot of knowledge about what was going on storyline-wise, he had me pulled in pretty quickly.

The Jimmy Jacobs/Kevin Steen No DQ match was well-done and told a simple, yet compelling story. I think this was the one match on the card that had a well-told story bell-to-bell.

Negatives:

Way too many near-falls for my liking, I mean you are genuinely surprised when someone actually gets pinned, but I don't necessarily think this is a good thing, especially when its done over and over and over and over and over...again.

In-match storytelling wasn't very good. A lot of times someone would be laid-out motionless one second and then stringing a series of unrealistic (if not downright silly) maneuvers back-to-back-to-back the next second. Also there were numerous times in the tag matches where there was more a sense that it was a synchronized gymnastics exhibition than a wrestling match. I understand that it's not real and choreographed but I don't need that shoved down my throat when I'm trying to enjoy a wrestling match.

The announcing was awful. I don't know how many times they said that RoH had the best wrestling in the world and the best wrestlers in the world, etc. You have a good product on its own, just let the pictures be the 1000's of words. Also, when you're continually harping on the time and the time limit, you're pretty much no-selling every pinfall that occurs, because we know it's going to a time limit draw. There were a couple other times that the announcers pretty much ruined the oncoming action by foreshadowing it in some way or another.

Overall Rating: C+

Part of me thinks I'm missing the forest for the trees and nitpicking, but at the same time, I notice it and it irks me so it's a valid criticism of the product. Overall I did enjoy watching it, and I guess that's as important as anything else, but I can imagine I'll tire of the overall style the fed seems to be promoting pretty quickly.

You know, it's funny, those of us that go for ROH and went for ECW must just be wired completely different or look at wrestling completely different or something. For my taste, the worst ROH or ECW match is better than anything on WWE.

Yeah, it seems a bit fake when a guy takes 50 kicks to the head and keeps going. But I sure find that more entertaining than the ol' 5 minute headlock and the good guy finally decides to try a few elbows to the torso then hits his same 6 moves he hits at the end of every match and we all cheer and the fireworks go off.

Different strokes for different folks.

Also, as to why they haven't done the Steen vs. Richards thing yet, I think ROH fans perceive Richards to be damn near unbeatable and Steen is the best bad guy ever, so putting them against each other will kill the momentum of one of them, and they don't want to do that. At least not in a hurry. I think they'd be smart to let it build for a few months first. I'd really hate to see one of them lose.

I don't necessarily see the correlation between liking ECW and liking RoH's style of wrestling; they don't really equate to me personally anyway. I see RoH as more of an evolution from ECW than I do as any kind of homage to it, and therefore don't think liking one means you'll like the other.

I agree that from a match quality standpoint that RoH has a far superior product than most of what WWE puts out, but at the same time, AJ/NJPW both also put out far superior in-ring products than WWE and still maintain the ability to tell great bell-to-bell storylines, remain innovative and well-paced, and, also, avoid the two major issues I had with tonight's RoH broadcast.

I don't think I could have said this better myself.

ROH I find to rarely be completely terrible because the athleticism is generally there, but the matches almost never have any kind of epic feel to them because it is just a bunch of showing off that athleticism in a rather jumbled or random seeming way, or in just a boring and poorly chosen way. It's something like a jazz band where you can tell they are talented in a way by say, the solos, but the songs they select to play just aren't very good.

Haven't seen the ME yet but the undercard was ok. Briscoes/Bucks didn't disappoint. Steen/Jacobs wasn't bad but Jacobs selling killed me. He was constantly up and reversing **** 15 seconds after two killer moves. The F-5 he took on the chairs was brutal. Sounds like the main event was the typical ROH ME that I'm really not interested in but I'll probably watch after RAW anyhow.

Im hoping to hunt down a copy at some point, seems to be a decent PPV overall.

I agree that ROH can sometimes overuse the finisherfest false finish stuff. Its a fine line between when it tips the match over the top to being amazing and when it just looks ridiculous. That huge japanese tag match that got drafted by someone was a good example of it just being dumb. And fwiw i like indy style wrestling more than WWE style.

Did Jimmy Jacobs bring his railroad spike to the match?

The hammerstein crowd booing the announcement of this ppv's main event before they get started is epic.

I see production quality on these ippvs are still laughably low, haha.

Also re commentators i dont get why any company indy or mainstream would have anyone but Dave Prazak on play by play and Portia Perez doing heel colour. Best commentary pairing in the biz right now.

That main event was really good. Re it:

Spoiler:
From the highlight reel that went before and the booking of it as they started the go home i really wanted them to be brave and have Cole go over Davey to complete the mega build job they did of him in that match, then the heel turn completion of O'Reilly that built over the match was spot on.

Steen then cutting all over the PPV and Davey then ripping the trending stuff of ROH was a great end.

I'm looking forward to seeing Briscoes vs Young Bucks.

It looks like their building towards a Steen vs Richards match sometime this year, should be an interesting clash of styles.
