This is similar to the greatest match tournament that recently ended, but with wrestlers instead of matches squaring off against one another.

Below is a rough list of wrestlers to be used for the tournament. I took the top 32 from the ‘top 100 of the Wrestlemania years’ activity, and then added some, mostly those who excelled prior to that and/or outside the U.S. A few spots are currently free (assuming a 64 wrestler tournament), and we can replace others if it’s popular to do so.

Austin
Hogan
Flair
HBK
Rock
Randy Savage
Bret Hart
Sting
John Cena
Chris Jericho
HHH
Kurt Angle
Undertaker
Ricky Steamboat
Mick Foley
Curt Hennig
Edge
Eddie Guerrero
Bill Goldberg
Arn Anderson
Brock Lesnar
Scott Hall
Chris Benoit
Ted Dibiase (Sr…)
Vader
Randy Orton
Rick Rude
CM Punk
Ultimate Warrior
Jake Roberts
Owen Hart
Rey Mysterio JR.
Toshiaki Kawada
Mitsuharu Misawa
Kenta Kobashi
Jumbo Tsuruta
Stan Hansen
Great Muta
Giant Baba
Antonio Inoki
Riki Choshu
Manami Toyota
Harley Race
Lou Thesz
Nick Bockwinkel
Bruno Sammartino
Bruiser Brody
Buddy Rogers
Superstar Graham
Jimmy Snuka
Andre the Giant
Jushin Liger
Dusty Rhodes
Bob Backlund
Verne Gagne
Bryan Danielson
Sgt. Slaughter
Vader
Gorgeous George
Roddy Piper
Jack Brisco
Dory Funk Jr.

Some questions:

Am I right to think we can go through the matchups somewhat more quickly in this tournament then the previous one on matches? It’s possible it could take longer depending on how much viewing/research people do.

My thought is that I’ll put 16 (half) of the first round matchups up as fast as I can, then allow multiple days to vote as some will be more difficult then others. Then, people can just vote on several matchups at once, by copy and pasting a list of all the active matchups, then bolding the ones they are voting for. E.g. I'll post

Warlord v. Billy Gunn
Broom v. Mop
HHH v. Stephanie
Harley Race v. Kenta Kobashi

and a sample vote ballot would be

Warlord v. Billy Gunn
Broom v. Mop
HHH v. Stephanie
Harley Race v. Kenta Kobashi

He was only 44 on the Wrestlemania years list, and frankly he wasn't even the best member of the British Bulldog tag team. Not inclined to include him unless a lot of people support including him.

Exactly what criteria are we going to be basing this on? Drawing power? Technical skills? Storytelling ability? A combination of our own choosing?

I'm inclined to say combination of our own choosing, like the match tournament. Just too much controversy about how to judge wrestlers exists to limit it in advance.

Id include Davey Boy and id include some indy stars that never quite broke it mainstream like AJ Styles and Homicide too (yeah, today im counting TNA as indy, lol) and id also include some women with Trish Stratus, Amazing Kong and Japanese stars like Aja Kong too, generally throwing in wildcards in order influence some interesting rounds as people lobby for wrestlers no one would really expect, ideally with some playing devils advocate (which i personally may do on some more fun rounds).

My vote is to only discount people who are guaranteed to basically never win a round and if you get a weird number like 96 just have some get byes (perhaps based on seeding if you do it that way) and others have to compete.

I didnt pay attention to the WM years thing you did so im not sure how fair the voting was on that but id think being 44th, and more or less thus being in the top 50 WWF/E wrestlers of all time, makes you valid for an entry to this.

You really should have snubbed Undertaker from the OP purely for the reaction.

I'd definitely vote for getting Terry Funk on there.

And for what it's worth, I think Bulldog is enough a part of the fabric of wrestling history that he should probably be included.

I definitely agree with Terry Funk; merely forgot to put him on there. He nearly was in the top 32 of the Wrestlemania years thing, and he was a top star for years before that time period.

I can see AJ Styles but Homicide I think is a rather peculiar pick for such a tournament. I can see adding a couple of more women, but it depends on what people think, and which women they think ought to be added.

I'm highly opposed to the uneven number idea. It's way more messy and complicated, without much clear gain.

My own initial ranking of these, counting everything they have done everywhere, is:

Dynamite Kid
Scott Steiner
JBL
William Regal
Booker T
Brian Pillman
Tito Santana
Glen Jacobs
Jacques Rougeau

The reaction to him getting snubbed before was bad enough, but this would have been a fine troll.

Yeah I put them in no real order. I might put Booker T above Regal, but Regal probably has more strength in a TWF (The Wrestling Forum) poll.

I think Jacques Rougeau's career as a tag wrestler was pretty damn stellar, but yeah the singles runs were limited in value.

I'd also be inclined to give Tito more love than Pillman. A lot of his younger stuff may be hard to find video of though.

Tito and Pillman seem really close to me; because of time frame, however, I'd guess Pillman has more strength in a TWF poll, as you call it. Booker T and Regal are close also.

Booker T
William Regal
JBL
Scott Steiner
Dynamite Kid
Tito Santana
Glen Jacobs
Jacques Rougeau
Brian Pillman
Aj Styles
Homicide
Trish Stratus
Amazing Kong
Aja Kong

Obviously Regal needs to be in. He could win some rounds against some World Champions for sure. I have a huge amount of respect for the guy and would vote him over a few main eventers.

The other side of the coin is: Who did I list in the OP that shouldn't be involved in the tournament?

Last edited by moorobot; 03-06-2012 at 11:50 AM. Reason: We can certainly exclude one of the two Vaders I listed lol.

I think I've figured out how to do byes in a tractable and fast manner using bracketmaker, so having a weird number isn't necessarily so bad now.
