everything is situational and there are plenty of times those hands are playable.

The OP did not say he never plays split big pairs. He said "as a general rule", which I take to mean under normal circumstances, which I strongly agree.

IT IS A VERY GOOD GENERAL RULE!!

For those of you confused on Chips comment, High-only hands hold great value when played well. They play:
  1. Better HU
  2. Live to make strong hands
  3. When low are dead
  4. And against weak low boards (82,83,72,73 etc), that have trouble making highs.

High only hands scoop pots when our opponents miss their lows, and show great profit.

you should not interpret that as under normal cirumstances. that would be something like "usually I don't play big pairs" or "as a general rule, I'm super cautious with big pairs".

regardless, it is a really bad general rule. if you can't figure out how to make money generally playing big pairs, you're doing it wrong.

...and what do you do when one of those "one-way" lows hits an Ace and bets... muck or pray?

Although I'm a man of many skills, decoding your last message is not one of them (although I did sense a hint of sarcasm?)

The two options you offered in your original query were not sufficient so I suggested a couple more.

An Ace on board is a piece of information, that's all. It needs to be interpreted before deciding what to do, and while the range of options is dependent on my opponent, I'm not about to get religion over it, nor reflexively surrender what can be considerable equity.

Mostly fold especially if all the Aces are live.

When I said I don't play big pairs, I meant in my head I tell myself not to play them, but as Joe Tall said: they do have great value in plenty of spots.

Just looking at my stats, I've played big pairs 29.4% of the time they are dealt to me with a 11.38 BB/100 win rate so I guess you can scrap my original comment

Thanks for the thoughts guys
