I posted this in the beginners forum a few days ago but got no replies so i'm posting it here. It may be a simple question, however i'm not sure if i'm counting pot odds correctly or not in 7 card stud.

Example: a 5/10 game .50 ante and 2 bring-in

8 players makes pot (antes + bring in) $6 before any action

It's a HU pot raised and reraised on 3rd which makes it $26, it goes bet-and-call on 4th which makes it $36.

Now if we're the one calling here and the opponent bets on 5th the pot is now $46. If we assume he's going to bet on 6th and 7th too then we're calling $30 to win $46 (the $30 and opponent's 5th st bet) + $10 (opps 6th st bet) + $10 (opps 7th st bet) = $66. So the odds of calling are $66/$30 = 2.3-to-1, which means we need a 30.3% chance of winning?

I know I need the consider the possible (probable) bets on future streets but am I doing the math part right or wrong??

This is correct.

You can then adjust for:

Will I get in a raise if I hit?
Will I get paid off?
Am I really getting $66 to $20 (I can dump a missed draw on 7th).

But, yeah, basically you are doing the math properly.

ORLY?

So let's break this down by checking our answer. Let's say we win 30.3% of the time and lose the remaining 69.7%. This should yield a zero net.

For the 30.3% that we win, we get the $36 pot, plus villain's $30 and our $30 investment back. This means we get $96*0.303.
For the 69.7% that we lose, we lose our $30 investment. This means we get -$30*0.697.

So... $96*0.303 - $30*0.697 = $8.18... hmm that's not zero. We must have done something wrong.

Also, $66/$30 is not 2.3 to 1. It is 2.2 to 1. This would yield a 31.25% chance of winning.

However, the correct way to look at it is $96/$30 which yields 3.2 to 1. Getting 3.2 to 1 we would only need 23.8% equity to break even.

What "we" are doing wrong is thinking that we get to include getting our future bets back as part of our profit. You get 66 when you win (not 96), and lose 30 when you lose.

66/30 = 2.2 not 2.3

So its 31.25%

Also, the actual math is $66*.3125 (not $96)) and -$30*.6875 which both = 20.625

lmao... yep, you're right. Sorry, this one gets me every time. We win 96-our 30 to get it. So 66/30

Sorry guys... Pretty bad for a guy pursuing a PhD in math LOL
