Thursday at 6 P.M.
$20 Build-A-Stack tournament with one add-on any time before the first break, minimum $20 for 20K chips. Add-on is $10 for another 10K in chips, $20 for 20k, or $30 for 30K.

Friday at 6 P.M.
$40 rebuy tournament, $40K for 30K chips, unlimited rebuys until first break.

First Saturday of the month at 6 P.M.
$100 tournament.

Middle Saturdays at 6 PM.
$40 round by round rebuy tournament

Last Saturday of the month at 6 P.M. at 3 P.M
$100 Omaha High

Sunday at 3 P.M.
Same as Thursday

I'm in the very early stages of considering a move to Western Michigan and am a bit confused by the poker venues there. Are there no casinos but just these "charity" rooms? What does that mean exactly? What is the rake at most of these venues?

I have moved quite a bit and have experience playing cash games across the country but as I'm treading to read up on the cash game availability in Western Michigan, I'm just a bit confused.

That depends on where you live. I live in Muskegon Charter Township, just a few miles from Lake Michigan. It's a dead spot in the sense that the closest casino to me that deals NLHE and other poker games (Soaring Eagle Casino.) is a 95-mile drive. The nearest charity room, in the city of Muskegon, is about 7 miles. Grand Rapids is closer to casinos than Muskegon but I don't know the distances or which ones deal poker.

The charity poker rooms are licensed by the state of Michigan. Part of the room's take goes to local charities. I checked tournaments with the same buy-in from Soaring Eagle and Muskegon's charity room and they were the same.

A charity room can only operate a few days a week, but there several rooms in Grand Rapids (one in Muskegon) so you can play somewhere any day of the week. Depending on which room(s) you go to, the distance between GR and Muskegon rooms is about 30 miles.

Thanks this is really helpful. So what is the cash game rake at most of these venues? I get a little concerned if the venue itself is taking a cut and the charity is taking a cut that the rake may be high. I am (almost) exclusively a cash game player.

I have to punt that one. I am exclusively (not almost) a tournament player. In the future I will add the cash games when I post, but I know nothing about them. A couple years ago I was within walking distance of the room but that is no longer the case. I will try to track down that information.

I agree with Cliff, it will depend on where you move to for convenient poker access. The links provided will be helpful.

In the Grand Rapids area there are 4 charity rooms that operate. They can only operate 4 days a week per location but there is poker 7 days a week.
Eastbrook Bowling (east side) ... Mon to Wed ... 4pm to 1130pm
Westgate Bowling (north) .. Thur to Sun ... 430pm to 130am
King's Room (south) .. Thur to Sun .. 1030am to 515pm and 600pm to 130am
Lincoln Bowling .. Fri to Sun .. ?? hours

King's Room is by far the busiest room. Any room can run out of chips as they are allowed to only sell $15,000 in chips/tournament entries per day, which may cause a room to close earlier than scheduled since sometimes the players will leave.

Rake is typically 10% max $5 or $6 depending on the room and will be reduced when the table gets short. The charity and 'Supplier' split the rake 55/45 at the end of the night.

Gull Lake casino doesn't have a poker room, so the closest casino with poker from most of GR is in Battle Creek, being Firekeepers Casino. They run a very good room. Check them out using the Bravo App on your phone. Soaring Eagle Casino is closer to most North of GR, but their room is less respected and being remodeled all Summer this year.

There are 3 casinos in Detroit and 2 on 'this side' of Chicago that have poker rooms. Any of those will be just over 2 hours for you from GR.

And (of course) ... Shhhh ... there are plenty of home games depending on your (and the host's) comfort with that situation.

Although there are a couple who try, I wouldn't move to GR to make a living off poker, but the poker that is here is very good, both cash and tournament. I've never felt out-classed when playing poker outside the Midwest part of the country.

The 'commute' is getting a bit tougher for the 8:00 folks but typically we can still count on traveling about a mile a minute to get to where we need to go! I'm lucky that I travel the opposite of those folks most days and nights. GL

Great info. I really appreciate it. And 10% up to $5 is a standard rake for what I'm used to to so that's good to hear. I'm just a recreational player but may have a potential job opportunity in GR coming up (still very early, but just wanted to check out the seen because I'm a passionate part-time player)

WM is like no other part of the country (I think they all say that!) Very little racial issues yet very diverse, multiple religions all getting along, above average entertainment options (at a lower rate), and growth is happening a bit ahead of the nation IMO. Even if you came here and didn't like your job there would be other opportunities, very likely in the same field, without forcing you to move.

Medical training/research, office furniture (Steelcase, Haworth, Herman Miller), other manufacturing, automotive tier II (mirrors, wheels, interior), consumer goods (Spartan Nash, Meijer) and lots and lots and lots of small business. Smaller colleges (4 on one road in GR!) with 3 major colleges within an hour if you want to expand your resume.

As a passionate poker player you should find what you need to scratch your 'itch' with plenty of spice 1-2 hours away. GL

Firekeepers is 'chips only' on the table now. No reloading at the table either from what I'm told. Some tilters may just keep walking out instead of stopping at a 4 deep cage. No word on chip runners as of yet.

Don't forget the $100 chip bounty ($350 total) coming up (Sunday 18th) and then $100 splash pots all day Monday, Presidents Day. GL

What is a "splash pot?"

There are various definitions, but basically they put a black chip in the middle at the start of the hand which now becomes part of the pot. Some rooms call them splash pots but only do a 'high card' draw to see who wins, similar to when they give away a tournament seat to the 'lucky table'.

If you watch Live at the Bike, they will do their version of a splash pot as well .. Where each player puts in what is essentially an ante PF and then action goes as normal. It's a way to get action going again if a table has gone flat, especially a streaming table.

The players still have some control over the hand, whereas in a straight up 'showdown' hand everyone gets to the showdown automatically. GL

Even better ... All you have to do is be playing at a table and be logged into Bravo (and not away from the table) when they pick a random seat every 30 minutes. I don't think you need a Player's Card when you sit down, but if you win you will be required to get one. GL

What does that mean to be logged into Bravo? Does it require a smartphone? If it does, I'm boned!

Great GR showing at FireKeepers Bounty yesterday. 'We' had the winner ($14K) and 4th place finishers among the almost 300 entries. The winner collected 19-20 Bounties along the way. I did a FKeepers post with a little more detail. GL

Rumors of poker going into the old Johnny Rocket's spot at Gun Lake 'soon' ... Will be a very interesting time for WM if that occurs. There is supposed to be some sort of notification posted in the casino but no one has really acted like they 'know' the whole story as of yet ... more to come. GL

Well if they do the room right.... that would be fun! I like going to firekeepers but the drive sometimes kills me lol....
