Just an inexperienced tournament director It seems. I guess it's really not that big of a deal, but preperation is important. I'll file this one under "growing pains".

P.S.

There's a simple fix to this situation, without the use of different chips, but I charge for my knowledge

As was explained to me the reason for the slightly different chips was due to the size of the field. As was stated earlier they only had chips for 220 players. Those chips are their designated multi-table tournament chips. The different chips that were used are designated for sit-n-go tournaments. This was also part of the reason for the extended break during the color up. They were trying to remove as many of they sit-n-go chips as possible. I thought it was handled well considering the number of players who showed up (probably about 400 with the players who had to be turned away) beyond anyones thinking.

Why would it be beyond anyones thinking? Prepare for the worst, expect the best! Business 101. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know who their tournament director is?

Come on guys what's everybody crying about the chips for that's so elementary...

Apparently this place is doing fine and people are complaining about stupid chips being slightly different colors...come on

Instead of clogging up the thread with this tourney talk about chips and how the line snakes in the middle of the room why don't you guys talk about the cash games how the dealers are....

I mean really I hear the room is nice and they have good promotions talk about that not about the stupid small things...!!!!

I'm sure these small things can and will be fixed so give it time

This is two plus two man. This forum would not exist without bitching and complaining about mundane things. Not saying I like it, just saying it is a fact that you will see that in every thread, as I am sure you are quite well aware of.

In other news, I agree with previous posters that a strategy of using deepstack tournaments as their bread and butter should be implemented for now. This will translate to a lot more and a lot better cash games, I'm sure.

I am no business expert, or even poker room strategy expert, but go with what works.

Yea I agree that getting players into the room in general is a good strategy. It seems for right now that the guarantees are their best "promotion" so I think they should turn it into a regular thing, unless they start falling off of course.

Typically if you build your tourneys up, the cash games will follow. Speaking of that, is anyone going this sat?

Also, did anyone win $100 in their promotion. Every time I am there the same two guys keep winning! Basically they have thrown out so many tickets from people not being there when they are called that everyone that is there is getting money...still havent gotten my piece of the pie yet.

The reason nobody has really talked about the cash games is because there really weren't any. (very few) 290 players and the room has 29 tables, do the math.

Good, comfortable room, the chips were not confusing in any way. Black chips were black chips, and yellow were yellow, it was obvious.

I would go back for this tournament on every free Saturday; provided a great structure and value for the buy-in. I would not however go there for a cash game.

I was there yesterday.. they had 214 players for the tournment. They said they were going to cap it at 220 to save room for cash games. They had 10 games going most of the afternoon, and I only saw 1 limit game. When I left around 8pm, they still had 6 live tables going and about 40 people left in the tournment.

Dreaded set over set knocked me out ...

Anyway.. they handed out info on there upcoming tournments and promotions for December and unfortunatley there not doing the 10k guarntee in December, but there are doing some nice things. On the tournment end they have events set up everyday for day and night. Just a few are a Wednesday night $350 with $100 bounty 30 minutes/8k units with a 15k guarantee. Then on Sundays at noon a $40 $2500 guarantee and Tuesdays at 10am a $60 $3000k guarantee.

On the cash side they said their doing Aces Cracked for $100 twice a week to first 5 of the day. They also have a High hand Monday-Friday $250 for High hand and $150 for 2nd High Hand. They starting that at noon and goes every three hours until close. $2400 a day for the month isn't to bad, espically when there only getting a hand full of live games each day.

It's really a beautiful room, and in my opinion the most comfortable in S.Florida. If they keep doing things like this, I really can't see it being this empty forever. I'll be there today for the $200 drawings all day for the full-houses. The odds are good when there's only a couple tables..

I haven't been to the room yet, but a friend brought me one of their $5 Grand Opening chips. Are the rest of their chips like this? I'm kind of surprised they went with cheapy plastic with a metal core. I've not seen any other casino/poker rooms do this. Normally I would expect clay or ceramic.

yea all of them are like that...they feel cheap but they arent, they have a lot of security features that you cant get with clay or ceramic...gemaco makes them I think and they are the same chips used in the WSOP Main Event that Raymer won.

After perusing Gemaco's website, the Studz chips do appear to be made by them. I even found their exact chip design on one of the chip pages. Gemaco touts a color shifting ink. I believe that is the only real security feature unless I'm missing something.

They may have purchased them from Gemaco but after looking @ GPI's website I believe these are not Bud Jones but B & G chips which are common in Europe but not the US.

Most likely an OEM arrangement.

take a look at the blue $1000 chip on the left... it's identical to the $5 grand opening chip (except for the colors)

Putting aside the problem with the chips, which I imagine, Calder will fix sooner or later,
how was the tournament run?
Do they have competent dealers and managers?
What is the pay structure for the tournaments?
Does any one know if they are planning on the 10k to be a regular schedule tournament?
How are the fields?

The most professionally run tournament in Florida. don't know how long they will stay but.

They should make the $100 every SAt but they are going back to the $575 this week lets see what happens.

Times of the Tiournaments are off 2 they don't want to compete but 10AM too early and 8PM too late esp with half hour blinds.

The new tourneys and buyin are a move in the right direction but they need more chips to start better starting times ( more low cost tourneys )

I will call in or something and post later what the day and time is.

Went today for the $40 noon tourney. 20 players all thinking it was a $2500 guarantee which they start next week!

NOT to beat a dead horse but without the guarantee this thing makes no sense whatsoever.

$40 gets you 3000 chips and $10 dealer add on for another 1000 units. $5 house fee and $5 into the bad beat.

So of your $50 paid to play only $30 actually goes into the prize pool.

While not the actual rake you are paying 66% on a $30 tournament.

ouch!
