Hi guys!

I am flying to South Florida from Europe in mid february with my wife and we are going to spend a couple of days or maybe a week there before I have to be in NY.

What I am looking is some good poker games and warm weather and I suppose some shopping wouldn't hurt either (I am not going to make it without Sawgrass Milss or/and Dolphin Mall).

What I am asking is: what are the best places to play small stakes 1-2/-2-5 NLHE or PLO and some daily tourneys. I'd prefer a place where I can play 24/7, so if my wife wants to do shopping or sunbathing or gym or whatever, I can play in the middle of the day too.

I have been in Miami couple of times, but the area is not too familiar to me, so I have been searching some places on internet and it seems to me (I could be wrong) that Hard Rock Hollywood is one of the best places? How are the games there nowadays?

I looked at the prices of rooms there and the prices looked pretty expensive. Over 300 bucks a night. Is there any alternative places nearby which are little cheaper? We have a car the whole time so short drive is not a problem. I hope I don't have to spend over 200$ a night, but on the other hand I don't want to sleep in any cockroach infested motels either.

Any tips and suggestions are warmly welcome! Thanks in advance!

Go to shrpo.com and click the "Hotel Information" link on the right

Not sure exact dates you are going but they are offering a poker rate during february until the 11th for the lucky hearts open, weekday $169, weekend, $209.
Also on the link above is a list of nearby hotels and the rates.

Thanks! Unfortunetly I am flying to Florida 15 or 16 feb so I just miss the Open. The prices of accomodation surprise me a little. Usually its a lot more difficult to find a decent priced hotel from NY, but now I managed to get a room from good hotel in NY for just 115$ and I haven't been able to find a good one from South Florida yet, but it is what is it and paying little bit more for just couple of days isn't the end of the world.

Happy new year!

Yeah, its going to cost you 150-200 a night, even motel 6 will cost you $100/night. Its because its the winter in florida and you are somewhat close to the beach in this area. Search some hotel sites and look in Hollywood, dania beach and the south part of fort lauderdale, be sure if going fort lauderdale that you google map it, as some will be 2 miles away while others can be 10 miles away from the Rock.

There's a couple of problems with your timing (in addition to the fact of course that that is the heart of the winter season in SoFla):

For one, it's the weekend of the Miami International Boat Show

http://www.miamiboatshow.com/

Also, Monday, Feb. 16th is Washington's Birthday (aka Presidents' Day) which is a federal holiday making it a three-day weekend for many folks and another reason to fly south for the long weekend.

Finally, that is also Valentine's Day weekend which also is a big event/holiday for hotels and resorts in the area.

Thanks. I might be able to postpone my arrival for couple of days. Maybe I fly on 19th and spend the next weekend there. I have to be in Ny tues 24. at the latest so that would still leave me 5 days in Florida.

The guy who got KOed was really drunk and probably should've been thrown out before that happened. He slapped the guy who KOed him in the back of the head. Supposedly he has brain damage now and the other guy is facing charges, don't know how true that is but that's the word from regulars there.

The back story was posted in the comments section of the video:

Published on Jan 1, 2015

This happened on November 16th, 2014 at around 8:30am at Miccosukkee Casino near Miami Florida. The two guys involved in this video were exchanging ongoing verbal arguments between each other throughout the night at the poker table. Drinking was involved. This lasted for a while, until guy #1 (the guy who was beat up) lost a hand, then got out of his chair and rushed over to guy #2 (the one doing the beating) and punched him in the back of the head. (this was not captured on film). As a response to being hit from behind, guy #2 gets out of his chair (at this point the video started recording) and begins a beatdown...

Other notes: the guy who did the beating is actually a decent guy. He never started confrontations and was usually quiet and mature as a regular at the casino. He may look like the bad guy in this video, but the other guy was loud, annoying, and drunk, and attacked him first. However, one can argue if the retaliation was too excessive to be justified as self defense, but ill leave that decision to the viewers...

Enjoy the video, as this puts a whole new meaning to "bad beat" in poker!

Hey guys,

I am currently deciding on a city to move for live poker South Florida being one of my top choices.
My main games will be mistakes plo 1-2 thru 5-10.

I wanted to know if I'm going to be able to have access to these games on a daily basis in the area.(considering near Fort Lauderdale area for residence) How is traffic from Fort Lauderdale to plo rooms around? (I heard Miami beach traffic is terrible)

Also, from reading the forums, it sounds as the games there can get a bit wild and juicy as well. If any fellow plo regs can give out some info on the games (rooms, frequency, softness, atmosphere and etc) would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Gulfstream gets 2/5, 5/5 often, and 5/10/, 10/25, 25/50 sometimes, with an occasional 5/5 Big O or occasional 1/2. - Hallandale Beach
Hard Rock Hollywood, every once in a while gets a 1/2 or2/5with some 5/10 sprinkled in there - Hollywood
Hialeah Casino - gets 1/2. 2/5 PLO most days and i have seen a few higher stakes here and there. - Miami
The Isle - Pompano, has had 2/5 and 5/5 more and more lately but not consistently.

I live in fort lauderdale, which is a great place to live and in the 10-15 minute range of most of these rooms, a half hour at most to the furthest. Traffic will be fine as long as you aren't going to/returning home from these places between 7-9am or 4-6pm on a weekday.

Many of the games are sporadic or will run for a while, stop then come back. Quite unpredictable. Either way just check out Bravo's website for live games at random times.

As your post stated these games are quite wild. Most have straddles almost every hand, sometimes mandatory. Almost all of them are uncapped and play super deep and extremely aggressive. Every other bet and raise is pot with lots of money going in quite often.
I don't know where else you currently or have played PLO so this may all be normal for you.

The frequency of these games increases during tournament series running as well as in the winter months and mostly on weekends.

South florida is a great place to live and play poker, I'm not sure how viable it is for PLO only though. If you don't mind mixing in varying levels of NL and simply playing PLO when available then that is probably more accurate of what to expect.

Hi Rubix,

Really appreciate a thorough reply and detailed info.
I only have experienced with live plo in Vegas and Amsterdam which seemed to attract a good amount of gamblers overall where most of my profit came from. I don't know if this is the case with Miami casinos and what you mean by games being extremely aggro, do you mean mostly good aggro lags or many bad gamblers and maniac types? (General atmosphere for 1/2-5/10)

I am also considering between Fort Lauderdale and Miami area. They both look super nice and plan on visiting next month. Would the traffic times and level be somewhat different to the above rooms if I decide to reside in Miami instead of Fort Lauderdale? How would you compare the lifestyle of these two areas as a poker player?

Thanks again, South Florida (Palm Beach, Broward, Dade)

Traffic is much tougher to deal with in Miami (Miami-Dade County) than it is in Fort Lauderdale (Broward County). The poker is more plentiful/you have more options in Broward.

Look at a map of Broward. Look at the area bordered by Atlantic Avenue to the north, Powerline Road to the east, Griffin Road to the south and SR 7/US 441 to the east. That will be your sweet spot for poker accessibility. The Isle, Hard Rock Hollywood and Coconut Creek are all within that area. Expand that area east to Federal Highway/US1 and south to Hallandale Beach Boulevard, you'll also find Mardi Gras and Gulfstream.

Within that area, all those poker rooms are within about a 30-minute drive if you avoid rush hour.

I'll be spending a few days in south florida in mid-February and will be in the Delray/Boca area. I've played at the PBKC, Pompano and Coconut Creek in the past. I'm willing to drive a bit further if there are better rooms/games.

I play mostly 1/2 but play some 2/5. I've noticed in past trips to South Florida - the style of play has been a bit different then where I play (I play mostly in NJ/PA). In past trips to Florida - I've noticed most players buy in short - play for a high hand jackpot and either shove a short stack or fold - where up north the style is more patient, where people are playing deeper stacks and not hunting for a high hand jackpot.

Do all of the rooms in the South Florida have $ 60 min buy ins at 1/2 - or do any have higher (100 ?) minimum buy ins. Are all rooms basically $ 5 rake and a $ 2 jackpot drop - or do some rooms drop less. (I'm not sure how people can beat a 1/2 game long term with that drop).

I'm guessing the busiest rooms in the area are still Pompano and PBKC - but are what other rooms in the area are nice rooms which may be worth checking out.

Hey everyone, been looking to move to SF And have been doing a lot of research. Realistically what can I expect for rent of around 800-1000 a month. From what I've been hearing Fort Lauderdale is my best bet, any other suggestions. Near the beach is a plus. Thank you!

In Fort Lauderdale and near the beach, 800-1000 is not going to get you much in the way of comfort or safety. Your best bet would be to look further north and to the west of I-95. And even then, you'll need to budget more than $1000/month.
