It can be disconcerting to sit down at the 5-5nl game, and everyone else there knows each other and all the dealers. Not just from the game, but outside the game.

I was very suspicious as well, but didn't see anything overt while I was there. Quite the contrary, I saw them trying to stack each other even harder than the other players.

Even the husband and wife go after each other when in multi-way pots, but will check it down if HU. I have NEVER seen either of them raise someone out of the pot to check it down tho.

Rod/Et All.

Are we talking about the 2/5 game that I'm assuming, turns into a 5/5 game?

If so, I think it depends on the people (regulars) involved in the hand and also, the overall mood of the players involved. When i played, whenever those involved were doing well, checking it down was very common.. when one was short, tilting etc... it wasn't any different than two randoms going after stacks.

It's such a soft game though.

Did the PLO ever go this weekend? I think I'm still planning to come Sunday, whether it happens or not. Of course, I'd be happy to get some PLO in, so if someone wants to start the list around noon, I should be there by 1:00.

Who's interested?

OK then - Start plugging the game for Sunday then. I'm gonna try to arrive and leave on different buses, so that I can lengthen my stay by about an hour.

met some lurkers and the usual robtheduck mothermucker sighting today...
11-30-2008 , 12:14 PM
I was there from about 3PM Friday to 3PM Saturday. I was playing 1/2 from the seat on the dealers left on a table near the back left corner. Every dealer was great and keep the game moving along while being social. Same for the folks at the desk and the floor. The players were typical for AC 1/2. It was a great atmosphere to play poker. Thanks. I don't get to AC often (enough), but I'll be playing in your poker room on my next trip. Hopefully Showboat will offer a poker rate soon......

Has anybody had problems with getting comps from the poker room? I played about 4 hours on Friday from about 2-6, and my Total Rewards account still shows nothing. I am pretty sure I didn't get credit the last time I went either (yes, I checked in and out both times). It seems like they are using a new system now using their computers (they used to manually check you out with cards, or so it appeared). I figured the comp's would show up faster, but apparently not...It's not a big deal, but I am curious.

As Rod has pointed out, we recently had an employee meeting regarding how the room is doing, what improvements need to be made, and any complaints that we had. It was fairly informative, although not exactly too encouraging at this point. The room is kind of in limbo right now (despite leading the property the last quarter in terms of profit vs cost.) Because of how slow it has been in AC (not just at Showboat, but everywhere) we are all trying to figure out what can help the room prosper.

You all know the potential that the Showboat Poker Room has, now it is time for you to let us know what you want. I have talked with the director personally and told him I would get some feedback on what our customers are saying and what they think could benefit the room as a whole. They have some ideas in the works, but with the way the economy is, who knows when they will be tried. (i.e. special tourneys, comp promotions, etc..)

When Chris was the Poker Room Manager, he was able to speak to many of you and consider some of your ideas. Now that he is gone, the director is trying to fill his shoes, but he simply doesn't have nearly as much time to spend in the room as Chris did. He has many more responsibilities. A couple of the dealers suggested getting feedback from customers, and he loved the idea.

I will go to the director with any ideas that you can come up with, and who knows, you may be the reason it is implemented! Make sure that whatever you come up with, it is reasonable for the size of our room and the staffing that we have. Also, explain your ideas as clearly as you can so when I go to the director, I can have a clear understanding of what you want. He is willing to try new things, but they have to "make sense" for the company to do them. Anything from special tournies, bigger games, promotions, etc.. let me hear 'em!
A couple of other comments.....

1. When in the poker room, you can smell the cigarette smoke coming from the bar area. I don't know if maybe something can be done with the air/ventilation system to drift the smoke away but smelling it kinda sucks.

2. Give Rod a raise......he does a good job.

3. I do like how the dealers and floor people are in more casual clothing but sometimes it's hard to tell that they work there. I do like how most of the female dealers wear the tighter, pink shirts, though.

1) That was odd...I have almost never smelled smoke in the poker room until yesterday.

2) true...there are more than 1 dealer that does more than just deal in the room and gets no credit, its sad.

3) no comment

1.) Yeah, I smelled the smoke yesterday too, which is odd since usually you can't. Maybe there was something wrong with the ventilation system yesterday?? Or perhaps someone broke the rules and lit up close to the room away from the bar.

2.) I will second what Rod said.. There are many of us that go above and beyond what is expected of dealers at the Boat. During busy times, some of us do some things that normally only supervisors would do (i.e. work the front podium, raise the blinds, collect seat open buttons, etc..) The managers and supervisors appreciate it, but as far as pay goes, we still get paid our normal hourly wage (which obv. is low because we work for tips..) A few good things come out of it though.. it shows our dealers care about the room and want to make sure things run smoother, and also when it comes time for our annual evaluations, it does mean a raise!

3.) I kinda wish we could do the casual thing all the time. Those uniforms we have are so restricting when we have to reach for cards/chips, and it gets so warm in the box with those on (especially during busy times when a lot of people are there and those lights are shining right on us..) It was nice to have a few days to wear casual clothing and actually keep cool for a few days while it was busy. I do see your point though. Maybe if we had uniforms such as the borgata tournament dealers wear (i.e. the polo shirts) it would work out a bit better.

Just to keep you all up-to-date on your comments/ideas about how to improve the room.. I have a meeting this Friday at 5PM with the director and the higher-ups to discuss improvements to the room that have been brought to their attention, so you still have a few more days to throw some ideas out there if they haven't already been mentioned.

I do know a few things that are going to be discussed already:

1.) Poker Room Rates
2.) Special Tourneys (I'll make sure to include the mention of a PLO tourney)
3.) Promotions (i.e. "Happy Hour promotions" Comps, etc..)
4.) Rulings (more consistency in floor calls and also in how the dealers will be held accountable for enforcing the rules. Too many times a lot of the dealers will sit down and hear things like "Well, Dealer 'x' will rabbit-hunt, why won't you?" "The last dealer didn't care that we talked on the phone at the table.." etc..)
5.) The Poker Tournament 5 (or "tpt5" for short.. lol)

I do not know what to expect from this meeting. But at least they are going to listen to what we have to say and hopefully we can get some new things that can make our room one of the best!!

This is my biggest problem with the whole room - I am admittedly extremely sensitive to bright lights on my head, but I think the lights at the Showboat are way too bright. They are brighter in some areas than others; sometimes I can get in a seat where it is dimmer, but if I am stuck in a seat right under the bright lights I have to leave earlier than I had planned because I just can't take it anymore.

which one are you, there are so many people I tend to lose track of everyone. Plus, I am still getting used to this sleeping during the day thing so I have been a little out of it.

It is nice to see employees taking the initiative and taking customer ideas and suggestions and presenting them to management for possible consideration.

Just don't forget about your new regular customers.
