he was drinking pineapple juice all night.

I don't have all the details, I am hoping it will be a 2 day event and the structure would be slightly better than last time, but as soon as I can talk to the right people I will post all the information on it up here.
Am I missing it or is there no info on this 75k on the Showboat website?
Thanks

Wow, so many interesting comments in this thread since I posted my trip report from Sunday.

Beaudog, thanks for the great post. You mentioned a 3-6 LHE game with a full kill at the Showboat and that is something I definitely would be interested in playing. I played 3-6 LHE at the Showboat about six weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon, but the game only lasted about two hours after I arrived before it broke.

I usually go to Atlantic City about twice a month. The last three times I have been there, I have played $1-2 NL for the first three times in my life. I mostly just wanted to see how I would do playing no limit. I had a $130 winning session, a $14 winning session and about a $60 losing session. But I really don't have the temperment and fearlessness to play NL cash games more than once in a while. I love to play, but I play purely for recreation. I don't have the stomach for losing a buy-in on one hand.

Rod, I never knew you were actually one of the "Mike's." Guess that is why I never found you the last few times I have been looking for you while playing at the Showboat. LOL I am glad I know that now. On my next trip, I will definitely have to ask the dealer if he posts on twoplustwo when I get one of the "Mike's" dealing at my table.

Kanban66, not sure if the kid you were playing with at the Trop was the same maniac I had at my table on Sunday. The kid I was playing with on Sunday said he plays almost exclusively at the Showboat and occasionally at the Borgata. He said there is a lot of money on the tables next door to the Showboat, but he hates most of the players and dealers there.

There were a couple hands in which an opponent would bet a huge amount on the river and the maniac kid at my table would fold to the giant bet. When a couple players acted shocked that the kid did not call the huge bet, he said, "I make stupid bets, but I usually don't make stupid calls."

There's a lot of poker wisdom in that quote.

Roll call: Who's gonna be there this weekend and what do you want to play?
08-06-2008 , 10:00 AM
1/2 HOSE (only adding razz when the floor is distracted) with a button straddle, half-kill, 2's wild during stud, $1 from each player for anyone who is dealt rolled up trips, $1 drop from each pot for a quads jackpot, and 15 minutes alone with Kellie or Yessica if you win 3 hands in a row.

Make it happen.

Will be around....
Arriving Friday around 3p....
Saturday at Borgata for Deep Stack tourny
Sunday day off, at the boat
Monday back to Borgata for day 2
Tuesday...back to borgata for final table (i hope)

While at boat, 5/5 NLHE, would play 2/4 Pot Limit Holdem (High Only), 3/6 O8 with full kill. 2/5 NLHE if 5/5 isn't going.... 5/10 NLHE (800 min/2000 max).

There has been some info...its still about 6 weeks away, so people aren't totally focused on it yet....

Here is the basic info:

Saturday 9/13/08 -
$225 + $25 -
10K in Chips -
25 minute levels -
start time 12noon (I think...could be 11a...note to self, need to check that)
Blinds start at 25/50
antes start at 4th level
Structure was listed on earlier post, on page 60 of this thread
Should get somewhere around 400 people....not quite sure how competition from Borgata Open will impact...could actually pump up the action as people may want a less expensive option than the $1,500 tourney that day, and there will be no normal 300+40 at the Borgata.
Will have hot women in skimpy outfits carrying round cards

Things I am hoping for, and will push for (if not for this one, then for the next), either add a couple more levels in the mid-levels to keep it from becoming a shove fest to soon; add 5K to starting stack; make blinds 30 or even 40 minutes....

Any one of these suggestions would make the tournament a couple of hours longer, but still a one dayer, but would keep the shove fest from starting too soon and allow some play prior to the final table, where the total chip amount should allow for some play as well.....

As I said, I doubt it will happen on this one, since they need all sorts of NJCC approvals that they probably have already received, but maybe for the next one.

Hi all,

I was planning on trying the Showboat for the 1st time next Sat (8/16). If I arrive at around 10am, what kind of games can I expect? Will there be both 1-2NL and 2-5NL tables running? Should I expect a wait? How is the caliber of player in general on weekend mornings/afternoons at 1-2 and 2-5?

Usually play the Borg but have read a lot of good things about the Showboat in this thread, so looking forward to trying them.

At 10am 1/2 NLHE is running, possible that a 2/5 will be left from the previous night, the last couple of weekends that has been the case...the 5/5 game usually goes around 12noon after some of the players bust out of the 11am tournament. If the 5/5 doesn't go, then a 2/5 will....with the 5/5 starting a bit later about 2p.

The play is pretty typical of AC...at 1/2 lots of PF calling and calling down to the river, can get a big hand paid off...

At 2/5, Loose PF, tightens up Post Flop

5/5 plays big because of the higher min/max....

By mid afternoon, there can be a lot of money on the 2/5 and 5/5 tables...the 1/2's not so much as many people buy-in short, but it can be fun busting the short stacks and watch them rebuy.

Generally, I'd say 75% of the people buying in short are not doing so to play a short stack strategy, but are doing so because they can't seem to get themselves to put $300 on the table at one time, though they will often rebuy 3 or 4 times, so they end up spending the same amount.

10K is just not enough in chips IMO, if you are going to run a bigger tournament like this atleast get people there money worth, the borgata's blind level/chip stacks are the best in the biz that is why they have huge turn outs for there 500K tournament DS tournament and there other similar tournaments outside of the 10K WPT event, 10K in chips just becomes a shove fest like you said when the blinds come to 1k-2k...

Not a shove fest at 1k/2k...have to disagree there..remember you are talking about over 400 people, which means there is over 4 million chips in play...sure many people will be very short stacked and they will be pushing.

In these tournaments, the real short stack play have been hitting around the 4k/8k level.....

You can not compare this to borgata's 500K DS....you are talking 10x the buyin and 30K in chips...totally different...also its a 3 day tournament.

I agree that Borgata has a great structure, its Friday & Sat 300 +40 tourneys are good...but aside from 5 minute longer blinds, there is not much difference between them and Showboat's quarterly 225+25....both have 10K chips and both start at 25/50 with ante's starting at the 4th level.

The extra time might give the borgata a small edge in the "which structure is better race", but the Showboat's tourney is a good one, its well run and lots of fun....hope to see you there!

the showboat's normal $100 and under tournaments are ran by far best in A.C. I am just saying if you wanna generate more and more people for the $225 + 25 why not give the players some more chips and alittle longer blind levels it would prolly get more towards 600 + people, The reason the borgata gets so many people to play there wednesday and friday tournaments at high buy in's are because of 1 thing and 1 thing only they have HUGE Guaranteed prize money..

I absolutely agree with you...this september's tourney at the Showboat is a $75K guarantee...same as the borgata's friday tourney....I would love it if they stretched the blinds to the same 30 minutes that the borgata has....I would love even better a 40 minute blind level.....

Actually Showboat's 9/13/08 tourney will be a better deal....75K guaranteed for $250 instead of 340!!!!!

Whenever I play a tournament in A.C. the only place I play is the showboat because it has great value, the dealers are great and the floor runs a great job, My biggest gripe is not even chips to start, even if it was 12k-15k starting that adds more to start with and you are only prolly gaining maybe 1 hour more to the tournament......

I have been speaking with the PR manager about this...nothing they can do about the 9/13/08 tournament as they would need to go to NJCC and all that, and just not enough time, but he is looking at doing some different things for the next one.

What is happening here is a process...for a long time the PR at showboat was somewhat of an afterthought and the current Manager is trying to change that....

What I have suggested among other things is going for say 15K in chips and increasing the buyin to $250 + $30....with the extra rake as incentive for the casino management to give the poker room the extra time that such an increase in chips would create.

The big problem at the showboat is that they don't have "convention space", so they have to share the Orleans Ballroom with the other casino events when they do a big tourney like this....

I have also suggested maybe a $300 + $40 with 30 - 40 minute blinds & 15K to 20K in chips and playing down to the last 3 or 4 tables on saturday (probably around 10 or 11p), then continuing the tournament on Sunday in the area just outside the poker room in that empty space ....

If indeed the structure is what was quoted a couple of pages back, then this tourney does have great value (PF 10.5, SL 6) compared to their daily ones. My only complaint about past tournaments I have played at the Showboat was the lack of dealer speed. Do they have/use auto shufflers yet?

Given the size of the room, will they be capping the number of players?

Once this is posted on the website, please, please, please, also post the offical structure. It makes all the difference.

Thanks!

No shuffle machines for the tournaments, daily or special. I believe not every table they use for tournaments have a shuffle machine, so it would be unfair for some tournament tables to auto-shuffle and some to have a hand-shuffle.

That is what I remember. Not good for a "higher" buy-in tournament.
08-07-2008 , 11:59 AM
I was talking about the daily tournaments in the poker room.

I believe they use different tables for the special $225+$25 buy-in tournaments and they are held in the conference center. None of those tables have shuffle machines.

I believe Showboat probably rents those tables from a company. I do not see them having that many tables in storage somewhere.
08-07-2008 , 12:10 PM
The 225+25 tournament does not use shufflers...the tables they use are "temp" tables, rented or not I don't know....

In the regular tournaments they do not use shufflers either...the shufflers are on the "cash" tables....even if a table has a shuffler it will not be used in a tournament.

As for the speed of the dealers...some are very good and very fast, especially Elena, though there are some very....very....very slow dealers....even when they deal cash games and use shufflers they are slow....just luck of the draw...since they switch tables every 30 minutes....it evens out....I have clocked the tournaments and in the regular tournaments it is damn close to 10 hands per 20 minute rounds...in the bigger 225 tourney (3 so far) it has been around 12 hands per round, with very fast dealer getting perhaps 13....

Alot also depends on the action and how long players take to make decisions.
