How did the Orleans manage to "corner the market" on limit action at all, much less without actually being on the strip?

It's long established that NL and PLO are far more popular in general than LHE or O8.

But somehow Orleans has managed to attract a huge, consistent share of limit players in Vegas.

How did they do it and how are they able to maintain it?

Although they also play no limit, limit games are more their niche poker market. It works because plenty of older people and locals like to play limit. The same population that prefers limit also tends to like free covered parking, cheap eats, points, promos, jackpots etc. and most importantly avoiding the strip.

It's hard to picture too many 4/8 and 8/16 limit holdem and omaha games running 4 handed in the near future. But ya never know. I wouldn't rule it out.

From my understanding (don’t live in Vegas) the 8-16 Omaha used to be at Venetian. They did something to tick the regs off and they took it to Orleans and it stayed there. 8-16 hold em began there at some point and it gained traction. They have good promos and run the room very well (IMO) and treat the players very well (great customer service and perks mentioned above with parking etc.). So the games found a home there and limit players go where they get limit action (and Omaha players go to this place which is the holy grail of Omaha 8 with dealers that are good at dealing it and good games). So if you are a limit player that plays less than 20-40 it’s a good spot for you. They also get 15-30 Omaha 8 going but it’s mainly during wsop not sure the rest of the year. I like the place and if I lived in Vegas I would certainly hit that 8-16 Omaha game quite a bit because I enjoyed it.

Yeah but there are nice people too. If you play Omaha 8 crankiness is pretty universal, the mood here in those games is way better than some other places like AC for Omaha 8 n my experience.

The games are usually good, with plenty of action and traffic. Like anything else, a minority of locals who are tremendous *******s make the most commotion, but the rest of locals are just a typical mix of people and player types, some of them very nice, cool people.

There is a different atmosphere at The Orleans than rooms on The Strip. No glitz. More functional than luxurious. It feels more like a large card room in California than a typical Vegas casino resort, which may seem like a drag for people wanting a younger, more lively party atmosphere. I don't mind, and prefer The Orleans for the reasons I mentioned above. Depends what you are looking for.

I'm married, in my mid 50s and just there to play poker. I enjoy playing with geezers and not being the oldest person at the table. I can reference a line from a song from the 1970s, or something Charlie Brown said, and not get met with all blank stares from young dudes with headphones on. Makes me feel so young, makes me feel like spring has sprung!

California O8 players are actually a happy bunch ime. The problem was getting in the game, in my local room. They only ran 1 table and the players never sat for less than several hours. I've watched 2 hours go by and the list never move. If you didn't get there by mid-afternoon you might as well go home and try the next day.

Ahhh this reminded me of my 1st trip to Orleans. Sorry for the TLR in advance:

I always had a fondness for LH/O8 games from early online days wh*ring in LH/O8 freerolls tournament then playing the cash games to realease the free promo money.

Missing the old days of playing FW 4-8 LH game when it got 7+ tables on the weekend with the Almighty B...(You know who) leading the action. Two another buddies never missing a free lunch burger at Burkes, but not able to get that 5-10 kill game going.

Two summers ago in Vegas finally head over to Orleans to kill an evening in between the MTT grind. Get my name 4-8 O8 and sit down into the first open 4-8 LH seat. Instancely reconize the 3 guys on my left from the east coast and resist telling the old Mike McDermott Chesterfield South joke. They don't look that thrill anyways and don't reconize me either as we haven't play in years. The other side of table is a group of much nicer AARP members talking & joking about subjects I have no clue about. I'm in my 40s now btw. After 45 minutes of slow+softplay, I jump into my O8 seat.

I sit down and the older drunk lady on left insults me before I can barely get my chips out of my rack with "You got quite the ugly puss on your face". Pot. Keetle. Black. I think to myself or maybe it's just a right of passage. I retort with the "Sorry my dear old dead mother gave me this face". My mother is alive & well btw. Even beating Covid-19 recently with asthma, allergies and COPD from a half century of smoking *prays*. That seem to lightly the mood and I precede to play a few hours never getting one scoop on 25 staight 4 way river showdowns. Good times were had by all.

Bonus Venetian O8 story;
About 6 years ago out on a solo poker only Vegas summer trip. Decide to try the 4-8 O8 game at Venetian. Instance regret it when I see that they use only $1 chips and the poor dealers have to build 3-6 stacks of 30s every hand to divided 4 ways guaranteeing about 15 hands an hour max with every hand being 6 ways to the river. I do manage to get a couple scoops, but didnt off set all the other gambling losses.

The highlight of the session; Playing with very nice older (retired?) hooker. How did I know she was a hooker? Don't ask ... just kidding ... her pimp join the game right after me obviously! Good times was had by all.

The 2nd highlight of the session was getting a ring side seat/table to watch Stealthmunk play heads up PLO for what look like 50k at the time. He won. WTF is he these days btw?

Last bonus Venetian PLO/NL story (I swear):
Year before the previous Venetian O8 story, me and my cousin head over to play right after we land. He heads to 2/5 NL with $500 and I head to 1-2 PLO with $300. I sit down not realizing it's 500 max with a $5 bring and blinds are rounded up too so the open is $20. Basically 2-5 PLO disguised as a 1-2. I make the rookie mistake and don't want to chicken out when I see a $20 raise-call and post-call with QsTsQc9c first hand. Button re-raise to $80. ok obvious AAxx now but I have a great hand to out flop him 3 ways I call. Flops comes QdJc9s cha-ching! I pot it and pretty surpise that button re-pots it heads up. Can't be AAKT. Can it? He rolls over: AAKT. Brick, brick, bub bye. Good times.

Go over to whine about this to my cousin but he's too busy getting the $500 all-in w/TT on Tc7c2x and getting called heads up. Well at least one of us is getting paid. His opponent rolls over 77 too nice ... don't have to fade the flush draw ... and ... 7x comes on turn LOL! Well so much for my bad beat story. Good times.

TL;DR cliffs:
- Had a fun time with drunk lady at Orleans.
- Played with pimp & hooker at Venetian.
- Watch Stealthmunk win 50k PLO heads up.
- Lost QTsQ9c vs AAKT on QdJc9s 1st hand.
- Cousin gets 1 out w/ TT vs 77 on T72 thirty seconds later.
- Good times were had by all.

The End

I love the Orleans what can I say. Place has character and action (I also liked the Taj — enjoy a bit of degenerate flavor and fun and laughs vs tight and quiet found at many NL tables, Wynn being an exception as their games and room are fun). I’m in my early 40s and I enjoy Orleans and have had good times there. Hope to make a trip again at some point when things have cleared up.

I discovered The Orleans somewhat by accident in 2014. It has since been my poker room of choice in Vegas. Prior to then, I stayed on the strip, and only ventured off to go to Rio. I am now fond of off-strip Las Vegas when I visit, and only go to The Strip if there is a specific tournament, concert, show or restaurant that attracts me.

In 2014, I booked a last minute 5 night trip during WSOP, which included a Saturday night, and found what I thought was a great (cheap) deal at the Wild West/Days Inn. After my experience, I wouldn't stay there for free. When I parked in front to register, I came very close to stepping on a used condom as soon as I stepped out of the car. The place is dirty, disgusting and depressing. I had no practical problem with my room or any security issues, it was just lowlife, ghetto and shitty.

On my 3rd day, I played poker at The Orleans, then booked a room for my last 2 nights in town. It was the only time I ever checked out of a hotel early simply because the place sucked that badly. In comparison to that Wild West skank hole, staying at The Orleans felt like the height of luxurious comfort.

I stayed at Orleans a few times after that, and it was always ok, but they kept raising their prices and resort fees, without providing much of a "resort", so now I prefer staying at an airbnb condo, and driving there like a local to play poker. Convenient.

Disappointing, of course, that this year got so interrupted by covid19. Last year I enjoyed the $150 NLHE tournaments The Orleans ran Monday through Thursday during the WSOP. It was a good structure and value, attracted a lot of poor players and a decent prize pool. It was also great to be close to parking and food options, unlike tourneys at Rio and other huge casino convention areas. Convenient.

Much like Jeff I have an affinity for places like the old Taj so I like Orleans a lot.

In my experience for O8 the 4-8 and 15-30 are different flavors of miserable. The former hate their lives and the latter hate everyone else along with their own lives. The 8-16 I find to be rather enjoyable, though. A nice mix of folks who want to have fun.

Hopefully when this all dies down, things there get back to the way they were.

I’m with you.
The 8/16 is fun on steroids I can’t wait to get back.
It’s a super casino . Free parking a movie theater. Close to some great local places solid food within the casino a shuttle service to the strip.
What’s to hate

Wrong place to ask, but yes. I think so anyway, try asking in the Las Vegas Lifestyle forum.

If you like Omaha 8 it’s great. One of my favorite rooms to play because of the high low action.

I concur. Good turnouts on daily tournaments if you’re a small stakes tourney Grindr. And good structures too.

Hey buddy! I check Bravo constantly and see they still have boatloads of promos on the daily as always. Seems like not much has changed except masks and plexiglass dividers
