Agree! The feeling is mutual for us home-grown Marylanders

And those poor "Delawarians/Delawarites"... how are they even in the conversation regarding association with VA? I guess all things are connected via the Bay Bridge... go north and it's the MarWaSey? DelMarSey? OK I'll stop...

It’s not Delaware; it’s DC.

Lol... guess that shows how non-local the expression is! (Somehow I assumed it was from the name of the peninsula, DelMarVa shortened to DMV.)

Sorry DC folks... I assumed y'all come from out of town anyway.

I’m not trying to argue, but I’ve lived in this area since 1996 and everyone in my circle uses it from time to time when trying to speak of the greater dc metro area.

Not to one-up you, but I've lived in the area since 1963 and I've never heard anyone refer to the area as DMV. I'm not saying I'm unfamiliar with the abbreviation, just that no one local ever uses it. To those of us in northern Virginia, Maryland is that strange land across the river and Delaware might as well be a foreign country for as much as it ever comes up. And when I do see DMV used, it's always in print and I'm pretty sure it's an abbreviation for DelMarVa as BMoreE suggested.

I've heard DMV used to refer to District MD and VA a whole lot. Even on the radio. It's a common regional acronym.

Well W0X0F, one thing that we can definitely all agree on from your post: you and I are old.

That might be the source of the discrepancy: generational. Although I'll again admit I'm a Marylander more than a DC-metro'er. Likely different cultures & expressions.

That's what makes poker fun (for me) - playing with folks completely outside your normal circle.

Its new to me and I was born here, and i have only ever heard it from the radio or some california transplant trying to use local dialect he picked up from the radio. Very very few groups of people in the VA area use this. Not as sure about MD. In virginia the DMV is where you go to get a drivers license.

I was born in DC and grew up in the MD suburbs. Maybe it’s a function of how close you live to DC....

I've lived in several different DC suburbs for most of my life and can confirm plenty of locals use the phrase "DMV" although it's a somewhat recent thing. This article seems accurate: https://www.washingtonian.com/2015/0...ngton-the-dmv/ cause the earliest I can remember hearing it was from Wale ~10 years ago and it's become much more common since then.

He’s a rapper. I wonder how much of this is a race thing. Also, I’ve never lived in VA. Only DC and multiple MD suburbs.

DMV is short for Delmarva Peninsula - which technically is the Peninsula Area comprising Delaware, Maryland's Easter Shore, and parts of Virginia.
On Eastern Shore We use DMV all the Time.

It now means DC and the surrounding suburbs? Missed the Memo on that, but makes sense.

This whole discussion reminds me of "tri-state" as a term. It is probably used in every state, and in some states refers to multiple different states in different places. It's all about the context of where you are when you say it.

Here in NJ where I am, it can mean NY/PA/NJ or NJ/PA/DE depending on whether you're closer to NYC or Philly. But in NYC area it also means NY/NJ/CT. In CT it also means NY/CT/RI and CT/RI/MA.

Obviously, DMV is a little more specific and less likely to be usable everywhere, but when you're closer to DC the D probably refers to DC, and when you're closer to Delaware it probably refers to DE.

Thanks dinesh for moving the DMV/pizza posts over here.

I'm originally from SE PA, so tri-state to me means PA/NJ/DE. But of course I've heard it used for NY/NJ/CT as well and I'm sure it means something different to everyone based on where they're from.

DMV is, first and foremost, the Department of Motor Vehicles. But after that, it's short for DC-MD-VA, which is in turn short for the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...072905868.html

I've heard DelMarVa / DelMarVa Peninsula used hundreds of times, but I've never heard it referred to as "the DMV" or "DMV." Its Wikipedia page makes no reference to DMV.

It would be insane that virginia would get listed last anyway.

What do you all think is the best casino to play Omaha in Maryland? I've been to Live and they have 5 card Omaha (5 cards in players hand)- that is just a goofy way to play and I didn't bother to sit down.

unfortunately, traditional omaha is now very scarce in MD as 5 card variants have taken over. The other venue that regularly spreads Omaha games, MGM also features 5 card PLO games.

Seriously, when did this start happening? What brilliant marketing exec thought 5 cards in a players hand was appropriate? I must have played 4 card PLO online to the tune of tens of thousands of hands and would like to bring that experience to a casino. With no experience at 5 card I wouldn't dream of sitting down to be the resident fish.

It’s player driven.

Both places will usually spread 4 card if there’s enough interest. There usually isn’t.

Exactly, I much prefer four card as well but the people have spoken. The action players want five card so that is what gets played.
