It looks like things at Foxwoods seem to be getting worse and worse. 2014 seems to be a tough year for the Mashantuckets and it appears that things are going to get worse before they get better. First they layoff 120 dealers a few months ago then last week they announce basically that the Rainmaker casino will only be open on the weekends and now yesterday they announce the layoff of an
additional 50 dealers (and this is all being done as they are just entering their supposed busy season).
I dont know the actual statistics but from a personal viewpoint most of the times I am there the place just seems to be empty... I was there Thursday and it was so dead it felt like it does when you are there during a snow storm in January. Im not sure what the future holds for the place but there just seems to be bad news around every corner and all this is
before the new competition shows up to give them a real run for their money.
Here's yesterdays memo from the dealers union:
NOTICE TO FOXWOODS DEALERS AND DUAL RATES
ABOUT FURTHER LAYOFFS
May 17, 2014
With deep regret, we must inform our members that we have just received notice from Foxwoods management that they are cutting 50 full-time dealer and 20 dual rate positions between the Table Games and MGM sub-departments.
As required by the Union contract, dealers and dual rates may apply for voluntary lay off with severance pay and benefits, beginning immediately. The deadline for volunteers to apply is June 2.
The effective date of the layoffs is also still under discussion, but will not be any sooner than June 15.
We will be meeting with management as soon as possible in an effort to finalize these dates.
We will also be attempting to negotiate the terms of a tentative agreement to merge the Table Games and MGM sub-departments, in order to minimize disruptions to our members as a result of any rebalancing needed after the layoffs. Any such merger agreement will be subject to ratification by our members.
We will also be attempting to reach agreement to minimize how any re-balancing of Regular Days Off will be done, in hopes of preventing members from being involuntarily displaced from their current day off pairs. Management has previously asserted the right to do a comprehensive day off rebid and reduce the number of weekend day off pairs to the minimums required by the contract. The Union disagrees with management. Ultimately, such a dispute would be resolved by a neutral arbitrator. We are exploring ways to address the issue without the need for arbitration. We cannot, however, guarantee that the number of weekend day off pairs will not be reduced as a result of the past and current round of layoffs.
We will be posting an updated seniority list as soon as possible along with further information about procedures for volunteers and for potentially affected members to make their bumping selections, as soon as that information is available.
As always, we stand ready to do whatever we can to help and support our sisters and brothers and their families who will be affected by these cuts. Members with questions or concerns should feel free to contact the Union office.
