Tax purposes I would assume, same reason every casino requires it. Same reason you need to show your ID for a hand pay. You need to prove you're you, the players card doesn't suffice since you could be using someone else's. In the case of a hand pay, if you don't show your ID, you don't get paid - in which case the casino just keeps it. But in the case of a tournament where you win $5k+ (or whatever the threshold is), if you don't have ID they likewise don't pay you, but it's other players' money not the casino's, so that complicates things. Requiring ID up front eliminates that scenario from happening.
