That's good news for me, I hope.

Will be starting my 2/5 shots shortly.

Looking forward to some mini TRs.

Much of my impression of the Charity $2/$5 game was from a couple of games that had ridiculously low buy-in caps making it a shove fest.

Mini TR Firekeepers Casino, Battlecreek
Hey, guys. I played in a chess tournament in Battlecreek this past weekend, and one of the bonuses from playing there is that I got to visit the Firekeepers Casino for the first time. It’s right off of I-94 just east of Battlecreek. You can tell the place is pretty new (less than two years old) as soon as you drive up to the property. The place had a sleek design, fancy fire display surrounded by water as you drive up, nice doors and lobby entrance. My buddy hit the craps tables while I went to check out the poker room.

They have a pretty well lit, large poker room with 12 tables. At the time that I was there they were about half full with different types of cash games. They spread the usual limit and NLHE. They also had interest lists for NLHE $2/$5 and PLO, both of which ended up running after I sat down at a $1/$2.

They claim to have the lowest rake in Michigan (10%, $5 max), and they have no jackpots of any kind. As soon as I sat down I was greeted by a nice fellow from Indiana named Rob, who was playing the role of table captain. He tried to keep the game fun for everyone, while ingesting Red Bull and Mountain Dew. Apparently he had been there since 9 PM the night before and by the time I left that night, he had played just under 24 hours (he had to take a break when the table broke early morning for lack of players, otherwise it would have been over 24 hours of straight poker). The other interesting thing about Rob was that he had about $1,100 on the table when I sat down. Max buy-in was $200, but I have no idea how much he had to re-buy. He said he was actually even as of that morning, and then went on this heater.

I could see why he was getting so much action too. Even though he talked a good game, and he had the image of a bull$*** peddler, the guy had game, and value bet the locals for stacks. One hand he took down he had quad tens and got paid off by tens full of aces (other player had pocket aces) after over-shoving the river. I found out a little later that he was an online pro and was now forced to play in the charity Indiana games and Firekeepers. I think he had $1,500 in front of him when I left, so he was doing alright.

I had two hands of note in the three hour I was there. One hand I raised preflop with A-J offsuit. I got called in two places. I continuation bet a flop of A-K-3. I got one short stack caller with only one PSB left. He shoved on the turn when another ace hit the board, and I called and won against his K-9. Yes, K9o, friends. I played at Firekeepers two nights, and I have to say that the action was good and the play a level weaker than most SE Michigan card rooms. If you haven’t made it to this room, there are fish waiting.

The hand that really made my night was pocket nines in middle position. Even though I had been playing super tight, I got the standard 7 callers after I raised to $17. The flop was an amazing A-9-3 two diamonds. The small blind shoves his remaining $29, and then the UTG player reraises to $59. It gets folded to me, and I reraise to $200. Everyone else folds back to UTG who decides to go all-in with $214 total. I call the extra $14 and see that I am a huge favorite against pocket threes and AKo. My hand holds and I rake in a huge pot. Ended the night up about $500.

The second night I played there I got a strange surprise when I got called Poker Monster by the dealer. For a moment I thought, could it be that the podcast is known in Battlecreek already? But no, he had heard me ask the floor about doing an interview the night before. I only made $5 after an hour of play that night (had to get back home for work the next morning), but the action was the same spewy, weak play. I definitely will plan on visiting this room in the future just for the action.

I played with a buddy this weekend who said the games at Firekeepers were the easiest he has ever played.

There were more level one players that anywhere else I've seen in Michigan. They had all the level one tendencies: bet sizes were too small, called instead of betting or raising, got bored almost right away, limped too many hands or ran some big bluff that didn't make any sense, got stuck and started gambling it up to get money back. And unlike some of the smaller charity rooms, they had a bankroll that let them keep rebuying. Not sure how long this is going to last, but of all the rooms I've visited, right now Firekeepers could be the softest room in the state.

Hi everyone. I am one of the managers that runs Johnny G's poker room in Mount Clemens. A player told me about this thread so I decided to chime in.

We are fairly new and still building clientele. I would like to offer $1 rake on any cash game from 6:30-8:30pm, and only $4 max rake after that...if you wanted to run your cash game in our poker room.

Free pop/water for all the cash game players as well.

Stop in sometime and we can work out the details! We are open to negotiation : )

Mike

First of all, welcome to the Forum.

Secondly, you might want to Check In with the Management here. They get a little bent when Room Management come in and "shill" for their rooms. I don't know the specifics, but it might be in the FAQs at the top of the Forum Page.

Stop in and say hi at Johnny G's...both managers are Mike...thanks everyone.

Hey guys, I'm new in this thread. I used to live around Detroit. in a couple weeks I'm coming back to visit and I'd like to play some live cash game. Any suggestions where the best room is? action? rake? what days are the best to play? How are the big three casinos in D? is there any good action running?

Thanks

Which charity room has the best tournament structure?

Played at Northville tonight and the blinds climbed up really fast (luck fest).

I am looking for a tournament structure with antes coming into play in the 3rd or 4th level.

Johnny G's right in downtown Mt. Clemens. A little north you have Sunnybrook and a little south off Gratiot you have Four Aces. Those are probably your closest for cash games. Sunnybrook and Four Aces also have tournaments. If you drive downtown for more the casino experience, all 3 casinos have nice poker rooms, but Motor City and Greektown have the most consistent action.

Johnny G's has a $1 rake for the early bird cash players (me). I live on lake St Clair so I play here normally. It's a new room so the action is still building but they treat you well here and it's run pretty well. Has kind of a "VIP" feel to it because the poker area is roped off.

Wasn't there but heard it hit earlier today on a brand new 1K-5K buy in game. Also heard that the 2 guys that hit it were regulars in the 300-2K game. Quad Jack's over Quad 9's.

If i remember correctly from my last time playing there the bad beat breaks down at motorcity as follows:
half of bad beat purse goes to person who lost the hand
quarter to the person who won the hand
quarter split between rest of table

played there couple weeks ago and people were there nitting it up in hopes of hitting that bad beat jackpot when it was $375k something. The table was talking about how its was the quads vs quads bad beat that was high, they also have another aces full bad beat progressive running there aswell but it wasnt as high at the time
