Ameristar is sooooo bad, I think I'm done with that place. Loud awful cover bands, pretty lazy staff, about 12 of my comp hours over the past few weeks weren't in the system for some reason, etc. A dealer knocked a chunk of my stack on the floor last night (I was directly to his right) and offered no apology or anything, then gave me a hard time for not acting quickly enough while I was scrambling to pick up my chips. Later the same dealer misdealt a hand, then made two other mistakes within about 15 minutes. It was only 7 handed and so many people were frustrated it broke the table.

I've been going up the hill a lot since Black Friday and in my experience the Lodge is ok, Isle is great, Golden Gates is good, and Ameristar is pretty bad.

Yes, in answer to your question, the tournaments begin at the Isle this week on Friday June 3rd. $100 total buy in NLH on Friday at 2pm and $500 total buy in $10K guarantee NLH on Saturday at Noon. These will be every week.

Best,
Matt

If there's a regular game at Golden Gates or Lodge or elsewhere that I'm just unaware of please let me know.
Fortune Valley has a $2-10 spread, come on up and check it out. Our brand new room will be open Wednesday.

$2-10 =/= fixed limit. Those small spread-limit games are so terrible. I don't think there's a more consistently miserable format in poker, at least in hold'em.
05-31-2011 , 01:49 AM
Matt- do you think you'll have 2/5-100 games running on tues night? If so what is rake and room comp rate for a player playing a 6 hour session in this game?

Thx

Thanks for your opinion. We have regular and new players that come up and enjoy it.

I'd love to get a 2-100 game going at fortune valley tonight (tues). They have good dealers and management and their high hand jackpots can get outrageously jackpotty if you know what I'm talking about! 2pm - 8 am tonight 2-100 fortune valley to send the old poker room out in style!

LOL - remember the old school 2/5 limit games before limits went up? Talk about a miserable game.... And now no regular limit games between 4/8 and 30/60? It's totally Bizarro World up here.

Many of us realize that poker around here is Bizzaro World. Some of us more so than others. It's tough trying to change the way of thinking around here though.

I don't know what this means exactly. Please explain.

Any time we get enough players for that game, we'll spread it. Rake is always $4 max and hotel room is free after 6 hours Sun-Thurs. $29 rate after 2 hours play.

Best,
Matt

Actually the room is closed Tuesday as it is moving day. We'll be open again tomorrow Wednesday. Give Henry in the poker room a call at 303-327-2200 and let him know what you're interested in seeing spread.

I was up there Friday for the choice game at Golden Gates. When it got short handed we switched to 7 card stud. Great game.

I'm new to the Colorado scene. I miss playing in my Boxers!

Took my third trip up to Black Hawk, went to the Isle first after reading all the posts here. Room was okay but not much action didn't bother sitting. Long walk up to the other rooms in town. Was looking for cash games, the Lodge was quiet too. Ended up playing at Ameristar. 12 tables going on Monday night with good variety. Played 1-2 100, plenty of fish. Staff were friendly and the dealers were all good, no break-ins which was nice. Super's calls (the ones I saw) were all good too. Room is comfortable, food can be delivered to you at the table - great pizza!

On my first trip up I got a room at the Isle, last night at Ameristar... now I know why the Isle gives their rooms away so cheaply. No comparison, Ameristar makes the Isle's rooms look like a bad Motel 6. But if you like a cheap room...

Anyway, I sat at 1/2 100, and could not believe the poor level of play. I played reasonably tight, with a few speculative preflop calls as I was generally assured of 4 to 6:1 on the preflop action with only a small chance of a late position raiser, and even if there was a late position raise, it was often not large enough given the pot, and very few people folded preflop. Post flop play was very predictable after only watching an hour or so of play, people played right into their images, and I only made a couple of bad reads (where I laid down the best hand).

Overall ended up winning $700 at 1/2 playing 2 sessions of about 3 or 4 hours each.

My favorite hand was: I pick up AA in SB, 5 callers before me, and I raise to $16, SB calls as does LP caller. Flop comes J59 rainbow, I bet out for $50 as I am worried about a lot of donk hands here after watching play (Q/10 suited is actually possible and I want any draws to pay heavily). SB folds and LP player pushes, after thinking for a couple of minutes, for $135 total, or additional $85. Pot is now about $150, so I am getting about 2:1 and range of hands possible for this guy is huge. I am either putting hi on a set about 1/2 the time, a draw or a weak A/rag pair with TK about half the time so I call. He turns over AJ, turns come A, and that is all she wrote.

They had 2 30-60 games all night with lots of Asian play, big egos with big stacks, would love to get in that game but need to investigate a little more first.

My play was far from my best, and I hit a few hands and got lucky with suited connectors twice in the day, but I was amazed at how bad the play continues to be with all the information available to players.

I'll be back for some more 1/2 later in the week

Since you haven't responded, I'm assuming you mean that players openly collude to assist in the high hand jackpot hitting by saying code words and such?

It's not a secret.... Not my style, but others might like it.

They'll deliver food to the poker room at Ameristar now? That's pretty new. I'm not sure exactly how I feel about that, actually.

Yeah, they do. You have to use your comp though. No cash transactions. Tell the Brush what you want from the deli, give him your card, and he'll bring it to you at the table.

I like it myself, as long as folks refrain from getting chicken wings and use napkins liberally.

I was wondering who'd be delivering the food - I suspect that the cocktail waitresses already hate having to go through the poker room. Having the brush do it seems a bit wasteful, though. They sure have plenty of floor types hanging out there, but I think I'd rather they spend some time paying attention and filling the open seats.

The guys I know who work there (dealers who also brush and floor) say it's a PITA, but they do OK as far as tips go. The Cocktails would probably do much better...they just have a better appearance than most dealers.

From a players prospective though, yeah you're right. Brushes should be helping out and running a poker room. Not running food orders.

There are lots of high end poker rooms where brushes or chip runners run food orders as availability permits. Personally, I'd like to see the numerous "floor people" and assistants spend less time standing around their booth talking with each other and more time responding when their customers walk up and need something.

I can't count the number of times I've stood there, dumbfounded, while two cashiers (understandably) ignore me and two or three brushes/floors are playing with their dealer rotation worksheet or just screwing around. Pay attention! Customer service, please!

[In fairness, I will say it has improved -- slightly -- over the last three months.]

Yeah, well the business side of that room needs some help for sure. I won't bash them here but having Brushes run food orders? Cocktails can do that, even if it's once an hour.

Fair enough re: bashing.

Right now, it appears that A-star has no mechanism to allow the staff to queue orders. Both the deli and Starbucks require someone to stand in the same (long, slow) line us regular mortals do. So it is a tedious process that doesn't make much sense.

The Ameristar Poker room has a point of sale terminal to place food orders in their podium which allows them to bypass the deli line.

Rumour has it that there is a new podium and Bravo being installed next month.

Anybody knows what happened to Omaha 8 games at Golden Gates. I went 4 times last two weeks and they failed to start the games. I guess I will have to go to Vegas more often...
