Nicest guy ever, dumped prodigious amounts of $$$ in the high limit games, apparently found murdered in his apartment over the weekend.

Wow, awful. Sorry to hear that. Sure hope he wasn't tailed home or anything like that. It's my worst fear regarding live play. I know you true high stakes players don't have to walk your money in and out but still worrisome.

From what it sounds like, he wasn't followed home from CAZ or anything like that, so as far as the poker angle goes that's good to hear. But still, terrible tragedy

Always had a smile on his face, RIP. And also RIP Mike O., another good guy who passed far too young at the beginning of the WSOP.

Good no limit action during Arizona State Championship?

I was thinking of making my first trip up from Tucson to CAZ this coming weekend - might play the tourney if there are still seats available but more likely to provide you locals with another cash game fish.

My question is how many tables of 5-10NL (or 10-20) are likely to be running on Saturday Aug 14? Are the buyins capped? At least I do know enough to know it is actually $500 max bet in these games :-).

The 5/10spread buyin cap is $2500, the 10/20spread is uncapped but doesn't run unless enough people try and get it going.

There will be one table of the 5/10spread going whenever enough players bust out of the tourney to get it started. We might get a must move going later in the day if everyone bustos and stays around to play. But I'd just expect to see one table, and if we're lucky two.

If you're thinking of playing the tourney on Sunday, I'd buy in before people start busting out on Saturday because they'll be buying back in on Sunday for sure. Same goes for Saturday. I'd guess it will fill up fast once people start busting out on Friday and rebuying.

Does anyone know what the plan is for the three Day 1's? How many are they playing down to each day?

AFAIK they are playing to/through a specific limit on each day, not a specific number of players.

They said on facebook they had 400 registered as of today. Seemed kind of low to me. The payout structure is horrendous IMO.

Not just the pay out structure, but the blind structure sucks...30 minutes rounds for the first 3 rounds, and antes after 90 minutes??? I know you get a lot of chips, but still kinda fast structure, basically the same as deep stack tournament. I guess I expected longer rounds for $1050

You shouldve seen the payout structure in '06 ($500 bi):
1st - 100k
2nd - 40k
3rd - 20k
4th - 10k

its $1075 bi by the way -- 25 dealer appreciation for 5k in chips. I'm 99% that the entire 1k goes to the prizepool (nothing withheld for dealers). And if they get 900 players, they're adding 100k, so there should be an overlay.

Structure will be bad, but 30 min levels are only first few, then they go to 40 or 45...
But value comes more from bad players than structure imo, and you will not find a softer 1k field than this one.

The rumor that day 1 is sold out was not true as of Sunday when I asked at Caz...due to the re-entry format I dont think they will cap the entries on day 1a.

75 mix has been going at some point almost every day for the last two weeks. It's usually a short game, with 3-6 pros and 1-2 spots.

They play mostly draw games, deuce the most popular, along with horse games, any-any stud (stud hi-lo no qualifier), pineapple, crazy p, etc...

Mostly deuce + whatever the fish and/or stuck people want to play.

Brad Helm, the high limit poker host/poker room manager, has been out of town, so I'd imagine the game will go more during the day when he gets back.

I bought in for Day 1 yesterday with no issue. Supposedly they will cap at 300 per day, but I don't really see why they would.

My entry number as of 3 weeks ago was 460... so when u say only 400 reg'ed I'm not sure I buy it.

Agreed on payouts, 31.25% for first is non-standard, and top 2 spots get 50% of total prize pool is similarly ridic... but we all know this will be chopped so it will prob work out to more standard percentages after the regs get done doing their stupid silly games... unless I reach the FT of course, then there won't be ANY chops. No way I'm ever giving up a shot at a 300K+ payout in a misguided effort to "reduce variance".

If 90 spots pay (assuming 900 runners), why wouldn't they play down from 300 to 30 each day and bring the 90 players in the money back for Monday to divide it all up... that would seem to make the most sense IMO.
