This is a spot that I struggle with more often than not. how much should you be opening the SB when its folded round with say 20bb effective? I like to usually opening around 50-60% of hands but often find I am putting in a lot of risky chips and having to fold a lot of hands. for example hands like K3s and A2o I feel I should definitely be opening but they usually flop badly and it will end up with a difficult spot because of position and stack sizes.

It seems to me it is probably a spot that most players struggle to deal with but I really cant find that much info online that addresses the issue. Thanks in advance for any comments and advice.

SB Opening range 50-60% is fine with 20bb. K3s and A2o are therefore included in this range. I go down to K6o and Q4s.
It is on the edge of p/f in medium phase mtt but having less than 20bb means p/f is better than raising, because of the % of flops you miss (~65%).

so yes, you will fold a lot of hands

Of corse range is sizable depending on BB's range (if you have info): if he is tighther, you can go up to 80% or even close to any2 and if he is an active player (i.e. has a FTS ~70% or less - and there are regulars like this!) consider tightening your SB opening range down to - say - 30% (i.e. folding even up to A6o).

Hope this helps.

Sorry if I sound like an idiot but I'm not totally sure what you mean by P/f, I'm thinking push/fold but if I'm interpreting it wrong that's prob not so good. I appreciate the advice though, I think adjusting the range is something I need to do more, usually my mindset is just I'm raising 60% no matter who's in the BB. btw the link just goes to a blank page?
