Anyone else agree that Victory poker will cause a huge influx of online poker players. Can't wait to play on a legitimate website. Thoughts from you buffoons?

So, is it a new thing in live poker for old guys to overbet pot constantly? I must have seen 5 guys over 60, (one like 85) that were super aggro and constantly hammering pot+. Did they ALL see Doyle doing it on HSP?

Also, in ~20 hours of live play in LV, only 2 HU4ROLLZ challenges, (followed by the standard back-out) . I must be losing my touch. My record is 4 in a day live, (one actually followed through!). Who's got the record(giving, OR getting, guessing Hellmuth has the giving record locked up).

Also, VERY annoyed at myself for passing on the opportunity to get a pic with Doug Lee. I won't let that happen again.

the only reason to go to college is if there is stuff you are interested in studying and you enjoy your classes.
going back just to get a degree and have graduated is dumb imo.

I went to college and studied a subject I had no real interest in, dropped out, played poker for one year and went back to college last summer studying a subject I'm really interested in.
I think every decision but studying the wrong subject first was perfect for me and right now it feels very good to study something interesting while I still have plenty of time to travel and the exams don't give me too much trouble.
I'd assume studying for a random degree for the "degree"-purpose is almost impossible for any winning midstakes+ reg as there is just not enough motivation unless you have some sort of outside-pressure (parents that own a company or something)

alinea is the nuts. best meal i ever had.

-don't expect to do what dean did. fluke, weekdays aren't as bad, but i had to wait ~6 weeks for a weekend reservation and I ate at 9pm.

-if u get the wine pairing expect to be pretty drunk by the end.

-it's not cheap. dinner for 2 w/wine was prolly $1100 w/tip, something like that.

-i think jackets are required but i don't remember. i definitely wouldn't show up looking like a poker player.

-if a group is going lmk, i'd def be down to go again and i live pretty closeby

jungleman,

to each his own, but if you are 3 semesters away, that's really not that long.

my only advice to you is to make sure you get something out of it while going, if you do choose to go. a piss poor GPA isn't going to do you much good, but if you finish strong over the last three semesters, you can at least say "hey, i was young and dumb, i blew off school but at least i was making some bills doing something else, by the time i figured out grades mattered, I only had 3 semesters left. i got a [good GPA] during that time."

i realize you probably won't need your degree, but i wouldn't count it out. you really never know. the ****tiest thing about poker as you get older is that you are driven further and further away from your peers. i won't get into that now but things are definitely a lot different at 26 for me than they were at 21, and I have some semblance of a real 9-5, too.

Jungleman,
Good Decision. I've struggled with this many times but I'm back in school mainly because its not that hard. Take a reduced course load find some cool/fun people to live with. Go to class and become mildly active in your school's community and its going to be worth it. Poker is financially rewarding and mentally stimulating but it isolates you from society more than most jobs, you need something to stay balanced.

Jungleman,

I've dropped out twice but now I'm finally graduating in a few months. It doesn't take all that much time and adds a normal facet to your life (I HAVE TO GO BUY BOOKS WTF!). Very well worth it and satisfying to finish.

amazon will get you rid of that for sure
01-24-2010 , 01:04 PM
Amazon sells textbooks?
01-24-2010 , 01:27 PM
I can only speak about non-sience (physics, math) related textbooks, but yes,
I ordered every book I needed for the past 2 semesters via amazon

getting a degree made me very very happy and i havent even come close to using it or even dreaming up a use for it in the past few years. its on the wall in my office partly for ironys sake, but also partly because im really proud of it.

consider that you will almost definitely grow to appreciate a degree more and more every day of your life (as you reflect on your accomplishments down the road and as it is potentially applied practically). in fact i think the same can be said of my entire university experience, not just the academic side. and like some people have said, its not that hard.

It's possible that Jungleman's parents are well off and using that as an incentive to keep him in school because they don't want their son to be a degenerate dropout.

I'm a dinosaur for the poker world (28) and finished my degree when I was 22 years old. I was able to buy all my text books on Amazon then (mostly math, physics, etc). I would assume they have only gotten more since then.

Nice going Jungle, College is a blast, Just balance Poker, College, partying and tilme will fly by

for those of you saying he should drop out now since he could just go back if he wanted to:
assuming he might ever have to/want to get a real job at some point, won't it be quite a disadvantage to have a history of dropping out when applying?
i'm like 4 years away from graduating (medicine, not a post grad in europe) and really torn between dropping out for a year or two or trying to balance it, which is kindof hard at times.
but i know that if i ever work as a physician, i want to be on the cutting edge - and thats gonna be almost impossible when all my rival applicants will be 5 years younger and without a fked up cv.

accepting money from your parents for bills would be laughably pathetic if you played 1/2 NLHU, let alone 100/200
