As a percentage of the buy in, when does a fee make the game not worth playing? For both Hyper turbos and regular HUSNGs

A stupid question OP if you really think about it. Very hard to answer. How much would a cup of coffee have to cost before you say it is too expensive?

You can just look around at the industry norm googling about rake on various sites, and sharkscoping winners. Pokerstars is widely regarded as the site with the lowest rake.

OP here is something you can do if you know your win rate.

The maximum rake you can afford to pay to break even is:
max rake = (2w-1)/(2w) where w is your win rate.

Suppose your win rate is 51.8% over a decent sample of HUSNG at a given stake.

Then, max rake = (2*0.518-1)/(2*0.518) = 0.034749 ~= 3.4749%.

I am considering rake as a % of the total buy-in (including the rake) so for example for stars $100 hypers it is 1.88/100 = 1.88%.

Any relevant discussion about rake needs to factor in player rewards.

A general rule of thumb:

- If your hyper rake is higher than 3% effective at low stakes, you can probably find a better place to play (equally soft, less rake).

- If your hyper rake is higher than 2% effective at high stakes, you can probably find a better place to play.

For turbos, it's probably more like 5% low stakes, 4% high stakes in the above examples.

Just a rule of thumb I'd look to use. If you're paying higher rake after your VIP/rakeback is counted into the equation, then you should really consider a different poker room.

If anything, I think my #s above are pretty conservative.

Good point. So, OP you can factor in rakeback in the above equation like this:

max rake = (2w-1)/(2w - rb) where rb is the rakeback %.

Example:

If you have 27% rakeback then the max rake you can pay while breaking even (after rakeback) is:

max rake = (2*0.518-1)/(2*0.518 - 0.27) ~= 4.7%

Simple check. Suppose you played on some site with that much rake (4.7%):
Then 51.8% of the time you would win (100 - 2*100*0.047 + 100*0.047*0.27) and 48.2% of the time you would lose (-100 + 100*0.047*0.27) which would average to approximate breakeven.
