PokerStars HU Hypers groups thread PokerStars HU Hypers groups thread

Main reason I opened the thread was I don't think PS official Heads Up SNG Improvement Thread was a good place for that discussion for obvious reasons. I see that mods already renamed it once, if public consensus is it's bad for the image of husngs, then I guess it's best deleted. Just think it's kinda worse if it's discussed in the official thread.

From the start it was a ridiculous thing to call these groups and putting that word in such a prominent position will only be detrimental to the husng community when random people browsing the forums hit the husng subforum.

Even if you don't mind scaring away recreational players, if you keep 'cartel' in the title every other post itt will be people asking if something unethical is going on.
I agree, I don't like the name cartel, it is such a poor name for what this is.

The problem is that people called the higher level one(s) cartels before (mafia is another one used), so when people make a group at a lower level, naturally they copied the name when describing it to one another.

If you guys want to suggest some new names or feel it should stay cartel in the title, post now. I don't want to change just bc of my own opinion and two others, but if some others chime in "hey, name cartel is pretty poor, lets drop it" I'm certainly supportive of changing the thread title (just leaving it as group or calling it a collective or something else).

It won't be deleted, but the name stuff is a valid point. It's good that you made this thread. Once PS replied with their stance in the other thread, it was no longer useful to discuss in there.

It's good to air out what these groups are so that there aren't misunderstandings. Misunderstandings, thinking something is totally different from what it is, is not very good for the community in many ways.

I think most people have supported this idea as a fairly natural development once they realized what it is. Obviously that's super general, but I think on a general level most people that understand are supportive. Keeping something secret or not talking about it could easily lead to many complaints about it, mostly based on thinking it is something it is not.

Keep the thread.

Thread title seems fine given they actually call themselves cartels quite often. Kinda lol to try to make a pr move here and refer to yourselves as a cartel elsewhere -- it wasn't some random confused $7s player who started calling the groups cartels, it was the members themselves.

I would simply name it HU Hyper organized regular groups, cos its what it is.. Originally cartel is a joke from all the mafia thing primo brought up, but some ppl arent taking it as a joke and think something evil is going on

Don't need the "organized" part, it sounds like the mafia then

Just HU hyper reg groups

Keep cartels.
Not sure if you guys know what cartel means, it's just a business tearm that describes a group reducing competition, in most of the time, by unfair means. In Husng that is 20 people sitting 1 guy and it imo describes it perfectly .

But after more thinking alot of people relate cartels with something really bad so maybe it's better for the community if we change the name, atleast in the title. Not sure anymore.

A post near the top explaining the reasons why it was created and explaining why there is nothing illegal with it is better.
The word cartel is used & 'wide-spread' so no point imo in any attempt to choose a better word for a situation that is created for obvious reasons while the situation is not illegal while there is just fear for a negative interpretation about the word.

In the end in a free market if you want to introduce a business it is your task to decide whether you can introduce it while not taking away profits from other businesses. And if you introduce it while taking away profit from other businesses; it is your task to decide whether the existing businesses will compete or just settle. It is also your task to decide up to which point other businesses will compete until they realize that a settle it the best action for them and yours.

Cartel is more accurate a word though:

"A cartel is a formal (explicit) "agreement" among competing firms. It is a formal organization of producers and manufacturers that agree to fix prices, marketing, and production.[.. The aim of such collusion (also called the cartel agreement) is to increase individual members' profits by reducing competition."

"A syndicate is a self-organizing group of individuals, companies, corporations or entities formed to transact some specific business, or to promote a common interest. In most cases formed groups aim to scale up their profits. Although there are many legal syndicates formed around the world, the English usage of the term "syndicate" tends to be more often applied to the ones involved in illegal activities."

No, it isnt. As others have posted, the definition of cartel very clearly fits this situation.

I dont really care a whole lot about this and dont blame the guys involved, but has stars actually said they are ok with this? I agree that economically speaking, something like this is bound to arise and that it is very difficult for PS to ban the practice, but have they said they are fine with people explicitly admitting to it and admitting to using skype groups to coordinate their efforts?
01-21-2014 , 11:28 PM
now is right time for ps to ban sharky
01-21-2014 , 11:34 PM
yeah, because all the rake they make from this crazy amount of reg wars is not enough, let's take away sharky so regs will clash all day and generate some more

also, i bet every grinder cant wait to start wasting some energy on browsing lobbies all

I'll keep the thread title the same since enough people feel it's appropriate, that's no problem.

In my opinion though, it's really not an accurate descriptor. What would you call a group of generally better real estate agents, teaming up to take the business away from less good agents that are just taking the easiest clients and giving the best clients **** service (avoiding them) to where it's bad for the overall real estate market? I wouldn't call it a cartel. An activist group, a group, something with the word accountability in it. Certainly not a word that is associated with vicious groups of people that murder thousands of people every year. Cartel is basically the same as the word mafia to the average person, therefore I think it's a pretty crappy way to describe it.

In my eyes this is not teaming up, this is having to form a group to hold enough people accountable to do what people should do naturally (sit other regs constantly over and over if they are not that good/are only bumhunting).

Would it be cooler if every solid reg at every level just naturally realized "Hey, I should be sitting weak regs?" Absolutely. But that's not realistic when even the $1k guys, who are less prone to bs, politics and weakness/fear than the lower stakes regs, have their own group/chat (maybe it's not a voting procedure or what have you, but I think the point stands).

To the PS question - In the PS thread in this forum the rep said they won't be taking action to regulate who regs decide to play.

Whether or not you want to admit it, you are literally describing a cartel. If this happened in real business outside the confines of a game, it would be illegal. That is why the word has negative connotations.

I dont give a **** about the guys doing this and I am sure many are your friends, but stop trying to soften what they are doing by changing the word when a cartel is exactly what it is. There is no ambiguity there.
