are there any big negatives to living in south/central america that i might not be aware of? i mean i see these beautiful cheap places to buy (or rent at first) on the beach in 365 day sunny warm weather and i think it looks like paradise. but i'm guessing reality is probably different.

well i can't find a link to the episode i saw where the couple ended up getting a condo on the beach in a brand new high rise for $160k but this is a real estate page for Salinas Ecuador for example (well maybe the whole coast). should give you an idea of prices. i live in NYC, so this all seems incredibly cheap to me. but maybe i'll just rent for a few months and play poker as a little getaway at first.

I don't say this quickly, but hating on the last girl I posted is like 98% confirmed teh gay.

For the real estate stuff:

The crime stats are way too general. You can evidence that simply by comparing the rate of your country/area of the world on that wiki link and looking at some common areas near your residence.

For example, here in Chicago, I can think of quite a lot of areas within a 25 mile distance that would have horrendous homicide rates. At the same time, I can think of a bunch within the same distance that have extremely low homicide rates.

It may not be true for some smaller countries, but I'd imagine places like Mexico have extreme volatility as well. I'd guess Tijuana has quite a higher crime rate than a rural coastal town with condos and villas on the ocean.

Research is your friend here. Really take time to look at prospective areas and once you narrow your search down make lists of positives and negatives and other points you value. Since everybody's standards vary, and some people might not care about a lack of a major town within 60 miles, for instance, you can find quite a "deal" for your own needs out there with a bit of research.

I'd specifically look at ease of importation for many small countries/islands (fees/tariffs and issues with customs seem to range from easy to cumbersome from the programs and text I've read). Other factors beyond safety would be stuff like taxes, ownership rights (some countries don't let you outright own property or have various rules in place that might give you a better or worse value on your property or make it tougher to sell), language primarily spoken, price of flights and other transportation to the property (if you are buying a vacation house or having people visit regularly) and long term stability/growth in the region.

I don't have any specific recommendations, but I find the stuff interesting. I also have no expertise here, so take most of this as such, but I've spent a lot of time reading about or watching programs having to do with buying various living spaces around the world. Radeh comes to mind as a good person to ask about this stuff, he has a real estate degree/certification and seems to travel quite a bit.

You can definitely find things even under 100k that might be suitable around the world in safe areas, but it all depends on so many things. Rural, non touristy areas in low cost of living countries can be great places to find a vacation studio/1br or even 2br type place for 75-125k. That doesn't mean a war torn country or unsafe place either.
