I think in this spot Rich a call and re evaluate the flop would have been the best way to approach this. Considering stack sizes I think his raising range will be A10+ UTG as he is short so a flat here and see where you stand.
The way you could also look at it is, what hands is KQ beating? You are best case scenario racing. I could understand the shove if you were less than 10bbs but you were quite deep with 35bbs so you had plenty of time.
