This. Whatever's going on in your life, it's more important than a thread on a forum.

Re: Moving Up Stakes, 2015 and beyond

Okay,

So basically at the beginning of February my urine was very dark and after a few days I ended up going to the clinic to get my blood/urine tested and my liver enyzme levels were, "grossly elevated" and I was instructed to essentially go straight to the emergency room. Felt fine the entire time btw, but my levels were 40-50x higher than normal and I guess when I was admitted they thought I had overdosed on Tylenol/other drugs or something.

Basically my urine was dark orange and I wasn't hungry at all. I hadn't had any alcohol in two weeks when I went to the hospital and they didn't know what was wrong other than that my liver wasn't functioning right. I was admitted to the hospital and stayed there for 3 days while they ran every blood test imaginable. I had my blood taken nearly a dozen times over three days and they tested me for basically everything --- bunch of different viruses, blood counts, a bunch of different markers, electrolytes, etc. etc. etc. but they didn't know what was wrong with me because I felt ~100% fine just literally no appetite and dark urine. I was probably eating around 500-1000 calories/day for around two weeks.

After staying at the hospital for three days and being examined by a team of liver specialists and having had all my blood work come back as essentially normal other than these things showing my liver was inflamed/damaged they released me for the weekend and I was scheduled to get a liver biopsy --- a ****ing transjugular liver biopsy where they legit put a cut in my jugular and put a catheter in my vein down to my liver and take a few samples to look at (all while I'm wide ****ing awake btw, youtube it). I got the results back from this after a couple days and it showed that I had some small signs of chronic inflammation and no other issues with it --- no fatty liver no cirrosis or some weird other ****.... so they still had no idea what was wrong with my liver, but were guessing it may be some auto immune disorder.

I got prescribed a steroid (prednisone) for the past week and repeated my blood tests today and they came back much better.... so I guess I have some rare auto immune disorder associated with my liver and so yeah I can't drink for several months, will probably never binge drink again and basically have to take some pills forever, but I'm a-oh-kay.

That was the dumbed down version of what I've been up to the last month, but the stress has been real as the doctors kind of freaked out when I got there and sort of made me feel like my liver could fail at any moment and I might die.

Anyways, I'm alive, should be treatable and will be playing poker again soon.

Re: Moving Up Stakes, 2015 and beyond

Yeah it's been a very stressful few weeks. My wife spent the entire time with me in the hospital and her parents came and helped us clean up our apartment. After my procedure I was told not to lift anything over 10lbs and was feeling somewhat fatigued/stressed/worried/etc. as there were a ton of unanswered questions and the doctors were being relatively unreasonable with providing any information to me with regards to what was going on. Every day was basically, "we don't know, we need to run more tests, etc."

So yeah, basically haven't done anything for the past three weeks, but now that there's a reasonable hypothesis of what is/was going on and that it's treatable I'll be pluggin in volume again.

Damn that sucks, def sounds like it could have been worse though. Hopefully smooth sailing now that you have medication to help it. Is it weird that it came out of nowhere like that? Could all the stress from poker and those long hours you played in Dec play into it at all?

The guy said it's basically a combination of having the genetics for it and having a trigger... coulda been stress/alcohol/who knows what.

You can't change your genetics but you can change your lifestyle/lifestyle choices, hopefully this is a wake up call for you to stop being in the 75% of obese Americans and adopt some healthy changes. You have age on your side and by the sounds a good support system (not 2+2 ass kissers) and you seem like an overall smart guy gl.

I agree with reload that you should not listen average dudes who gonna tell you to meditate and take deep breaths on every single problem in life, consult with doctors who have their degrees and listen to their advices. Wish you all the best fellow grinder

Re: Moving Up Stakes, 2015 and beyond

Oh forgot to also mention I had an ultrasound which came back fine the day I was admitted and then they gave me some special mri that only one doctor in iowa could perform or something.

I have been slowly losing weight fwiw... Lost about 10 lbs in the previous 2mo and then just lost nearly 10lb in last couple weeks due to this issue. My goal this year was to lose 25-50lb.

The pills I'll be on over the next 2-3mo greatly affect my appetite thoufh and I was told that I'll likely gain weight. The side effects are very noticeable... 4-5 hrs after I take it I sweat... feel like I've just downed 4 red bulls and haven't eaten for a week -- su per ravenous.

I'd like to clarify this is a genetic issue though

That's some scary **** man. Hoping the road back to health/on going pill taking/changing your lifestyle somewhat is comfortable enough to manage.

Take care of yourself!

Glad to hear you're ok Mason.

As for the Prednisone, get ready to have the worst sleep of your life. You'll also be in a bitchy mood, temperature fluctuations, and a lot of hunger.

Prednisone actually made me hallucinate but I think it's fairly rare.

Re: Moving Up Stakes, 2015 and beyond

Yeah everything is fine. Would like to reiterate I've felt fine the entire time just my liver was apparently very inflamed. I guess stuff like that doesn't always cause any pain or discomfort.

The prednisone makes me like insanely hungry 4-5 hrs after I take it. Also makes me alert/focused and makes me sweat randomly.

Re: Moving Up Stakes, 2015 and beyond

Was wondering if you retired from poker. Thats to bad what happened. I know exactly what needs to be done to fix your situation and why your liver is the way it is, but I just deleted everything for you to do because I remember you called me a liar when I didn't lie and you never apologized. I do like to help people with health issues, but I can't help you. I will give you a hint. Its highly unlikely the doctor is going to fix your liver. Maybe get some advice elsewhere. BUt it is good to know you got better and gl on the tables.
