So here were hours of Marathon pt. 2.
Ran average I think, even when it was Sunday. Not complaining at all, I just think that if I seek to have a big winning day, I have to hit some big coolers on my side.
This is true especially for the highest limits, I would include 400nl here. Flush > flush type spots vs rec at 400 => guaranteed big winning day.
I had a time period in my May graph, where blue line was breakeven'ish. That's just the "bread and butter" grind. Then I started to hit big coolers on my side, and blue line skyrocketed.
We could say this "bread and butter" grind, is when you ran worse than your opponents. You just have to deal with it mentally, and understand that it's part of the game, no one is against you, not the poker gods or the poker site
And so it would be a mistake to check results during this time!

Well at least I'm prob running above EV this month. I'm not curious to find out results at all! Something weird is going on with WWSF as well

I wanted to fold face up soooo badly, but I'm not mentally strong enough for it.
I think AA, and maybe KK as well should 4-bet smaller. To make it a profitable call, I would need him to spazz out AQs AQo or something.
At least I'm just happy to have these loose/passive type recs on my games. It's more common to have an aggressive 50/30 tricky type guy who always tries to win pots.
It's a privilege to play against guys who give up so easily. It has to be really tough mentally at 400nl if your plan is to just wait until you can limp/shove KK, or hit coolers. While waiting for those spots, the rec might hit a breaking point, and do something stupid. I think eventually he will do something stupid when he doesn't get his coolers and keeps losing.

Let me try something new.

Played a gross session at MPN.
Standard bluffs, standard calldowns. Some were a bit "wider" than usual. Quickly found myself at nl 1k table. Mega whale, somehow got it in AKo vs his 98s and holded, ~2400€ pot, so at least I won that.

So, some hands, let's see how this works

h1: Chinese player bets 3 streets, I flat pre, xc xc xc. Not super happy otr, but I call
Spoiler:
and he shows up KJs

h2: 3bp SB vs UTG. I xc, x/jam. Slightly deep tho. Puts villain in an awkward spot with 76s. AhQx calls it off. I may get villain off from weirdly played black AK, but that's not the main point. Little bit lazy but can't be wrong.
Spoiler:
Villain has 77, gg

h3: I call big 3-bet preflop and xc 3 streets vs recreational type player, whom some regs consider reggish, since he doesn't get tables started.
I'm optimistic to see some spazz there + I don't expect recs to bet thinly QQ+.
Spoiler:
He shows up with TT

h4: 3bp. I go bet/bet and face a shove, and call it off. I think sets would raise the flop often. Weak draws or combo draws call the flop. Expecting some combo draws to now jam the turn, maybe even ATs but only 1 combo. Since villain can mix up how he plays draws/nuts, I think call is fine here, could even see AK as well.
Spoiler:
Lost to TT I believe.

h5: 1k. Whale limps, I iso UTG 50€ TT, SB tight reg 3-bets to 160€. Smells like AK/KQ/AQ. Whale folds, I peel 110€. Flop Q73. He bets ½ pot, I have TT but choose to make a tight fold, since KQ/AQ gets there as well. I could only hope for 65s or 76s/87s betting ½ pot for protection. Some hands get diminished from 3-bet range because whale is in the pot.

Kinda happy with this session even when results are bad. Standard spots imo.

Played smaller volume for couple of days.
Tried some MTT's. Also played few tables of cash, and just kept staring at hud stats of other villains.
I think it's good to every once in a while just play few tables, observe things and enjoy the game. By this I mean just waiting to have a good hand on one table You can also over-analyze spots to see if you come up with a new idea.

Today I played 10 hours marathon. Very pleased to run better after that bad day on MPN. Finally hitting those coolers vs regs.

Couple of hands

h1: this could happen more often. Next, please!

I bought a new 1920x1200 monitor for poker as secondary screen. I don't like to overlap tables at all! Full HD is just a tad too small for my needs.
Will be picking that screen up tomorrow + gym, and some volume as well.
Most importantly, I've enjoyed playing lately. Maybe because the spots have been very very standard and easy. I don't think this way anymore, but I've also been happy to be right with most of my bluff catches. I have enough patience and logic now to deal with the times that I'm wrong as well, even if that's 5 times in a row.

This is the monitor: https://www.asus.com/Monitors/PB248Q/

Looks like I outdid yesterdays marathon.
On the first session, I 1-tabled a good 1k table. Made my money back eventually, by hitting a set just before table broke down.
2nd session, I played more 1k games and 600. Some of the games weren't that great, but I was interested to see what kind of stats the people have. Prob ended up with slight profit. Played decent, but because it's my highest stake, played some spots tightly.
3rd session I went back to normal stakes.
One reg looked like he could fold his family OTR, so I went for couple of loose bluffs, both times running into the nuts :-/ Was worth to try anyways!
I'm happy with my play today. I noticed when playing 1k that I was very emotional at the tables. I have been able to overcome a lot of those emotions when playing lower limits.

About 80% happy with my play today.
The 20% I don't like, is loose BRM after losing couple of big pots and not feeling well physically. I played 1k table and 400nl HU vs "tilted/tipsy" reg. I thought there was a HU opportunity, but the guy started playing solid again, and didn't really spew.
Bad BRM and not strong enough mentally! I mean I should just quit if I feel bad and not play these high variance games. The nut worst thing you can do!

2nd session was really good though. Perhaps this is the most BI's I have won in a day, but mostly 100nl stacks. Everything that I had learned about playing vs recs, came true in that session. They just kept bluffing me and I called. Some were big calls where rec overbets. Their line didn't make sense (polarized), and they ended up having the random bluff.
To counter that, I lost 2 BI's at 1k, but those hands are very fine to me. All-in-all, played 12½ hours.
Experimented bluffing very wide vs some guys, and some thin vbets failed, but I like my plays overall. Showed some hundoregs who's the boss

Couple of losing 1k hands.

h1: Whale in the SB. Tight reg CO. I think CO may bet his sets again OTT. Straight flush outs are one reason to continue. His line is strong af though.

Picked up the monitor from the mail today. Absolutely loving it!
Color quality is amazing.
With 1920x1200 I think the text is better readable as well, since it's scaled differently than Full HD.
Also bought a new gym membership. I think I'm about halfway through towards getting ripped, so it would be a shame to start slacking at this point.

I'm thinking of playing some sessions with very few tables, and just thinking some stuff through. I'm not happy with the way I play certain spots. For example my checking game is really bad.
But I think that may be because of an overall strategy that I've chosen. There are lot of strategies you can implement, and each one has it's benefits and costs.
I'm interested at trying out all strategies.

Cheers Panda!
The grinding is very tough and stressful though, and leads to an unbalanced lifestyle. When ever I grind >~7 hours, it becomes hard to sleep that night.

I refused to look at results, but I ran like god yesterday as well, mostly at higher limits vs regs.
I don't want to get too obsessed with specific numbers, because it may decrease my motivation to grind further. Anyways, I was super delighted, grinded 7 hours and spent rest of the day relaxing and doing other stuff.
Trying to take it a bit more easily now.

Putting decent hours every day.
Running good'ish every session.

I wanted to write something about winners tilt and overconfidence.
I have had some mental game issues lately, where I have not been able to keep an objective mind going. It's like once you're on an upswing, you just expect every pot to go your way. You also feel more protective towards your earned winnings.

"Standard" spots are standard.
Where winners tilt may show, is that you become overconfident with your bluffs, and start to bluff too wide, because you just expect those bluffs to work (somehow).
It may show up in spots where you call flop/turn raises wide and you are very optimistic that your opponent is bluffing. This may lead to overconfidence, where you're not able to fold spots where your opponent is mostly nutted. The opposite is to always put your opponent on the nuts, and just overfold every spot. This is fine strategy vs nits. Calling very wide vs aggro's is fine strategy.
It's hard to balance the two, especially vs regs who don't really fit either category.

Winners tilt is different when you play against fish or weaker players. We have to differentiate a passive player, and be rational about how crazy someone is.
Fish can always show up with something random, so it's not really overconfidence if you never fold river, since sometimes you do get shown the total random hand. This is especially true vs the biggest amateurs.

Where I think winner tilt has shown to me mostly, is that I want to win all the pots and expect things go my way.
Approach #A is to do everything in a logical GTO-manner. Approach #B is to add overconfidence to the mixture (vs weaker players who are bluffable / predictable). Let's say approach #C is underconfidence and pessimism.
I think we need to balance these 3 approaches, with #A being the most important. #B, the overconfidence, can be bad, but ultimately I think it's the key to higher stakes. The #C, pessimism, can be good, but only to a certain limit.

All-in-all, maybe I have chosen to bluff some spots a little wider than usual, due to overconfidence. But typically if I bluff wide, it's very opponent dependent. Different opponents can either increase or decrease my confidence towards a certain line.

How to fix winners tilt?
1) Forget about money and results (for now)
2) Approach sessions in a long-term, not short-term "quick profit" mindset.
3) Drop highest stakes until you have fixed winners tilt. Winners tilt can mean that you are very emotional, so when things start to go badly at higher limits, that may result in unexpected tilt.
4) Just make tight folds and give up some spots
5...) Get hit by downswing

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, today was a decent day, +800€ profit.
I was pleased to be able to play HU vs many opponents for a long time. Passive reg, followed by passive rec and passive fish
I was able to find my edges very quickly vs each one. Ran well, but also made some good bluffs and non-standard lines.

6-max was decent. Where overconfidence may have shown, was that I 3-bet bluff shoved river 250bb deep at 400nl. Because it's 250bb deep (a lot of money), I just don't expect many regs to be able to bluff shove that spot (in case they like money). To call it off with >4th nuts is a gross feeling that deep.
I just made the play so quickly, it felt like it was play money. That means I was detached from the money, and trusted my heart instinct, which is a good thing. The bluff is fine to me and I expect it to be slightly +EV, assuming that I can apply certain variables / tendencies to my opponent. Well he called it off with nuts, and -1k € that pot. Literally nothing you can do if they call off with nuts. Opponent had more hands than the nuts OTR for sure.
Would have been a big winning day without that pot, but I just decided to go for the highly ambitious play.

I don't know, maybe there's an element of trying to be a macho or something
If you become very good, in order to progress further, you need to test your edges. In that case, you either get hit in the face and get owned, or you start to figure out things. Trying is better than not trying for sure.

These were the HU results. Pleased to have a positive red line, but the opponents were fairly easy.

Health wise, I tried out ½ day juice fasting. I was feeling terrible and bloated due to the highly stressful grinding lifestyle.
Even when it was ½ day, it worked really well for me. I started to have that light feeling back again that I was missing. Will need to look more into this thing!

Getting ripped 2.0 is in the progress as well. I noticed that I spend much less time in the new gym, so therefore my workouts are a lot more efficient. I will get there for sure!

Few hands.

Not sure. Maybe being an overconfident macho on winners tilt is part of getting to the higher limits.
Underconfidence is certainly not a trait you want to have. Even the mid stakes whales pick up on that trait, and do crazy bluffs vs nits. Nits hit their set and get paid off eventually.
Hoping to grind tomorrow with a more objective mindset, and take it easy!

Glad that you liked it!

Maybe today I'll just play lower limits, until I get my head in check.
Things are fine, but I just want to make sure I don't end up doing anything stupid due to any of the issues mentioned above.
If I want to "gamble", I'll just rather play 5€ spin 'n go's (to hit the all-in spots).

So an update.

Pleased to say that in June I played the most hands I've ever played.
Being ~ -5k EV at NL 1K brought down profits greatly.
Overall I made approximately +4500€ profit and EV +5k €. Some hands could be missing. For sure one big 400nl hand is missing that I won w/ 95% EQ. So the most important thing to increase account balances and not to look at graphs!

It's really swingy. I mean wtf are those back-to-back +10k -10k swings? xD
Given the nature of variance, I think it's best to not over-analyze results. Winrate may be small, but there could be another upswing behind the corner.
It's best to just keep playing and see how things develop.
I can't think of too many leaks that I have. I'm going to tighten up my preflop ranges for sure. I think I'm calling and opening too wide in some spots, and it doesn't look like I'm going to make profit with some of those hands.

I'm going back and forth with things. I may call 90% of rivers vs fish and think it's correct. Then I may fold 70% of rivers in the next hands. Nothing is for sure vs recs though.
What I'm saying is that the definition of leak is that you are not aware of it. Going back and forth and experimenting, is trying to find solutions to that leak.

So yeah. With back-to-back 10k swings, I have no idea how well I'm doing. I review hands a lot, and usually I'm happy with the way I played certain hands. I didn't spew much either, and very little tilt.
My red line is kinda tanking, so I'm thinking why that may be.

NL 1K

I mainly lost at nl 1k due to bluff catches failing. Villains were very polarized in some spots, and this time I hit the nuts.
There's 2 types of leaks. Folding every time or calling every time. I'm not doing either, maybe residing more on the side of calling.

Few hands that may explain why nl 1k went badly.

h1: Aggro reg repping QTs, but not much else!
BB was the mark of the table. JJ usually (should) 3-bet, quads with 66 tend to check turn. Donking with OESD makes perfect sense.

So yeah. Bluff catches like that failing vs fish & regs. Only need to be correct 25-33% of the time. When you are correct, that's when you have your big winning months.
I have certainly had those big winning days where all your bluff catches are right, and your graph goes up like a kangaroo!

Now on with the NYE grind, hoping to bring month back to profit!

Epic December! Wooooo!!!

Spoiler:

I started the month by playing 50 & 100, especially during the morning hours I played a lot of 50 for volume.
I ran worse at all limits 400nl+. I took some high variance lines and I also called off some spots where short term results did not work out in my favour. Like those river spots.
I could be up a lot more had I folded more. Yet I am still optimistic that regs can spazz. They usually spazz out in spots where I don't really even think about and call down with a good hand.
I could have done a little less of those A-high calldowns vs fish. StdDev of 99 is just nuts.
Good volume, good productivity. My stats are good. I experimented with a couple of new lines which worked well.
Not much spazzing or tilt in the graph, almost at all.
I don't trust the graph 100% since some hands are missing but it gives an indication.
I had fun playing and if 400nl+ starts to treat me nice, that's when I'm looking at big winning months again.
I'll post a yearly update today.

Yearly graphs:

Cash:

BB:

Some hands are missing. Made some profit on untracked sites as well. I don't care for the exact € figure.

July:

I stopped updating in July.
I played a lot in July. I thought that I was doing really well (didn't check results). Then I checked results and my expectations were crushed.
That caused me a small burnout. I took a break for 4 months. Renewed my WoW sub and wrote my bachelors thesis during this time.
I did not feel like playing at all. That said, I think it's important to have some time off the tables and not constantly chasing more and more money!
Especially if you get to the mid stakes level, you can afford to have months off and do what ever you want.

Here was July. As you can see, I won over 10k at one point, but not realizing the month started with a downer.

As you can see from the graphs, I have a lot of big swings that are 5k-10k in size. It's extremeeeeely stressful. I don't love those big swings, but obviously can't complain!
All you can do is grind like a robot and hope that variance serves you well. I play a lot of tables, that is my style. If I play less tables, I start doing too much stupid ****. I have moved more and more towards being aggressive reg that fights back for every pot. It's been a learning experience. Maybe I have done some calls that were "too light". I have also made numerous hero folds against certain regs. All light calls have been vs aggressive and unpredictable regs.
Most of my bluffs have been decent, but there's some learning in that regards as well. Most of the learning happens just by playing vs good villains and getting owned in certain spots. My error margin for making river calls has been low. I'm usually within 5% error range and can trust my gut in that regards. I'm still getting used to making the very light call downs, and obviously getting smashed in the face while doing so.
Moving from limping to open raising strategy in the SB has been good decision and I don't think I go back. I had a ton of stress from over-analyzing small sample in that regards. I still don't know if limping would work very well. I played vs one very good reg who just kept applying pressure to my limping strat non-stop. When that happens, limping strat is no fun. Both hero and villain could do a lot of mistakes, but I just can't be bothered time wise. It's also good to OR vs fish since tighter fish fold a lot in the BB, limping would be disastrous in that case.

Let's review the opening post.

This year I'll be taking a recreational approach to the game and I'm also looking for an exit plan.
Reasons for this: Playing full-time 5-7 days a week is very challenging physically and mentally, it's hard to maintain good focus. Limiting this time frame to 3-4 days a week solves the problem. We also don't have to be starting tables with regs at 1pm just for the sake of volume, we can be more selective when and what tables we play.
Yes, first paragraph is correct. So many RB cuts, rake increases, sites taking off HUD's, 888 banning players, Stars.FR pulling off etc.
I have gotten better at multitabling and also at stress management. I think next year I could really push myself volume wise.
Those hours without traffic suck indeed. When summer comes, that's another time when traffic drops significantly. I can expect good games at least in January. It's very unpredictable when you will have the big whales. It could be any time of the day. If you can play lower stakes, I think the daytime issues reduce a lot. Hourly can still be good at 50nl.

Nowadays I play euro sites 100-400nl. Also looking to do some zoom challenge! Will be blogging some hands and progress here. After a swingy 2016 I'm hoping to get back on the right (profitable) track!
I only do zoom if I'm 100% prepared for it mentally, aka. no stress. I've experienced very big swings and it would only get worse at zoom. I'm also the type who fight back vs whales 100% so things could get really nasty variance wise :P

Goals for 2017:

[x] 20-30k profit depending on volume and stakes
- Made at least 20k, dunno the exact figure.
[½] Get ripped (started from scratch)
- I'm in a good basic form. From this form it's easy to start building up, if I choose to. The lifting amounts are not big, but considering where I started, I'm happy with them.
[x] Gain great poker results
- Monetary wise, maybe not. If I had one good month at 400-600nl, that would have been +10k to the graph. I just love to put in volume and review tough spots. Then realize that after all, I did not make big mistakes. Variance is what it is. You can buy amulets but that's all you can do!
[/] Get started with IT career.
- Hell no.
[x] Positive thinking and make progress in life!
- I have made very big progress in this regards.
Results by stakes:

Very pleased to have made small profit from 600nl+1k.
Just look at the variance between two small samples. I made loose calls at 1k and mostly I was wrong. That sucked. Reviewed the spots over and over again and I think that they were okay. Were they necessary? Well maybe not and they caused a lot of stress monetary wise. I could have just folded as well.

400nl did NOT treat me well. 50k hands is not a big sample. I'm really expecting to see 400nl graph turn around.

200nl going okay, but some very big swings there, especially now during christmas.

There is no god when you swing 40 BI at 100nl.

HU graph. I have had losing graphs for 2 years I think, the first year being regfish, 2nd year having variance issues. I'm pleased to have a winning graph here! (after RB). My HU game became very solid, but has a lot of leaks regarding small ball play.

I hope you enjoyed the update. Not sure if I'll make a 2018 one.

This year I would have to finish my degree by doing a 4 month internship.
I'm not really interested at starting a career even though maybe I should, because knowledge from the degree fades away over time. I'd be fine playing poker just on the evenings and weekends. It's not fun to swing a lot at 1k games at 5am morning when nothing else runs. Or log in and find out that it's only 30/15 regfish who gets the games going on high rake sites.
I'm looking forward to setting some financial goals. When ever I have a bad month in poker, those goals get stunted.
I'm working towards financial freedom. I'd like to make enough money so I don't have to worry about anything as the job markets become tougher and tougher. We are seeing things like moving towards all digital banking. In IT you have cloud technologies which in a way centralize certain technologies.
I'm still optimistic that I can make good money via poker, so pray for an upswing 2k18 :P

Cheers everyone who anticipated!

Thanks for the updates.

The overall $ graph looks crazy to me. All the jumping around different stakes created some wild swings. Most graphs I've seen for a sample of that size ('bout 350k hands) are pretty flat, so it must have been a pretty intense experience. Hopefuilly 2018 goes a bit more smoothly for you.

Not sure if you mentioned, are you still getting decent volume on Microgaming? Anyways good luck for 2018.

All you can do is play your best every day, reduce tilt and mistakes, make sure game selection is good and just wish to run better.
I'm certainly not in the top end of winners. Check my December BB graph, that's maybe what you mean. I had nice bb/100 at lower limits.
My stdDev is also high.
I decided to take very spot with calling and bluffing, if the situation looked good.
It's a big improvement from last year (2016), when I was still playing scared money, being results oriented and folding rivers a lot. I'm trying to find the optimal, obviously can't just call everything.

No I haven't really played there since the HUD changes took place.
Some of the Ottoman fish are very aggressive and same goes for the regs.
I would have to observe hands and develop a strategy for that environment.
i.e Do the fish bluff shove missed in 3-bet pots? I have certainly seen that happen on anonymous tables. While on some sites I'm begging for light calls and raises :P

Checked results aaaaaaand.... I'm in the hole!
Downswinging at 400 and 3k below EV.
I'm confident that I can finally grind out of this downswing/breakeven hole.
I just think that I don't get enough spots deep stacked where regs or fish spew off / make big mistakes. I also checked bell luck curve, and I was extremely unlucky with flushes last year. The rest were slightly unlucky but in normal range.
I have to cut down entitlement to the minimum, meaning that you don't even expect to win, just play your best every day. Just got to keep fingers crossed and hope lady luck serves you well.
I have almost forgotten what it's like to have longer lasting upswings. I believe it's all variance since I have worked intensively on my game, but we'll see in 2018!

So GL in 2018!

Just broke my biggest winning day ever (not the highest in EV)

FWIW still down 2k below EV on tracked sites

As far as January. I went through the biggest hell ever. It's soooo nice to have a positive ending to the month.
The grind continues tho and future results may wary. Keep on going!

I never had so bad month in my cash game career. Insane.
I might grind some more tomorrow but ready to wrap it up.
I grew a lot during this experience and some things finally just clicked regarding poker.

Hands like these all month. New reg who wasn't a SB flatter, and why would he flat anyways with LAG reg in the BB?
