Hey everyone I recently made the decision to put my two weeks in at the job I had for over two years and find employment, albeit part time in a new city with my long term girlfriend. I will be moving November 1st into my new place but until then I will be building my online roll up for live 1/3. When I move I will be starting off working only about 20-24 hours a week and trying to grind for an additional 15-20 hours a week, for a monthly goal of 75 hours a week of poker.
Poker History
I have about 600 hours of live experience in casinos since turning 21 with about the same about of hours pre 21 in home games. Of these live hours i can only guesstimate what I am up over the whole sample probably something paltry like 2-3bb/hr but over the last 300 hrs that I have since recorded on my phone I have about an 8.5bb/hr winrate. Of my recorded sample about 90% is at 1/2 with the rest 1/3 and barely any 2/5. I also played a decent amount of online poker pre black friday but was god awful. I started playing online again last november and moved up the stakes playing 10nl all the way to 50-100nl. Right now I am putting in about 3/4ths of my hands at 50nl and 1/4 at 100nl. Over 75,000 hands at 50nl my winrate is only about 2bb/100 and over only 15,000 hands at 100nl it is 3.5bb/100.
The Plan Till Nov 1st
The poker roll i will be using for my live semi plunge into poker will consist mostly of my online roll + maybe about 1-1.5k from my life roll. As of now my online roll is about 2900. I gonna try to grind that up as much as possible between now and Nov. 1st to limit the amount of money I have to take from my life roll. Even if I hit a down swing and drop lets say to 2k in my online roll and have to take 1.5k from my life roll I will still have a live bankroll of 3.5k to grind 1/3 or 12 buy ins. This would also still leave me with 3 months of living expenses saved up and still a part time job. Lets hope I don't go on a 900 dollar online downswing and instead can add a couple buy ins to my live roll.
Goals till Nov 1st:
put in 7k hands at 50nl
put in 1.5k hands at 100nl
Post 5 HH before Nov 1st of online play
These goals might seem kinda low and won't really add too much to my roll but I look at it as a learning experience before play more live hours. I know that the competition at both 50nl and 100nl are so much more difficult and knowing that I have the ability to beat these games (even for a small bb/hr) will give me confidence that I will crush 1/3.
Plan After Nov. 1st
After Nov 1st i will be only 20 minutes from the local casino, this will be completely new to me as i have never been less than an hour from the nearest casino. I am going to try to grind on the most profitable nights but will inevitably have to put in grinding days on slower traffic days due to work and social constraints. I know I should not have a goal for an hourly but i expect to make about $20/hr just based on my prior live results.
Goals For November:
Play 75 hours of 1/3
Work toward building a full roll for 1/2 (around 20BI or $6,000)
Post at least 5 live HH
Read one poker book
Well I have my goals and have really wanted to do this for a long time so let the plunge begin.
For 10/13's online session I put in 800 hands at 50nl and dropped -135.47 with 200 hands at 100nl +118.87 for a total loss of -16.60.
I feel like I played okay today but lost a couple buy ins on some really poor choices. Here's an HH from 50nl that I totally butchered. Hero has JhJd SB is a weak reg with 41/10/2 stats over 2k hands:
$0.50 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4
Hero shows Jh Jd (Two Pair, Jacks and Fours)
SB shows 4h 6h (Three of a Kind, Fours)
SB wins 107.48 BB
This is a hand where I misplayed every street. The flop should have been either a raise or fold never a call. This guy doesn't donk very often (17%) but I think a raise is by far the best option as I think most of his 9s and all of his flush draws call. The 8 on the turn changes nothing and cant be properly played with how I played the flop. with a VIP of 41 he has a lot of 4's in his range as well as maybe A9, K9, 89 and very rarely flush draws now with with how he played the flop and turn. The river check by him and bet by me is my favorite and worst disaster of this hand. What am I getting value from? exactly 89? Just a terrible terrible hand that wasn't thought out at all by myself.
So besides putting myself in some terrible spots I am overall content with today's numbers if not play:
Progress on Goals:
50nl: 800/7000 hands (-135.47)
100nl: 200/1500 hands (+118.87)
If you can beat 50-100 nl online you can def beat 1-2/2-5 live but focus on learning the nuances of live poker
Gl
Thank's Penny! still have a lot of work to get through on my game (as is evident in my first HH lol) but am pretty comfortable in live having a decent number of hours there. Will be moving from North Jersey out to Pennsylvania.
10/14/14 Played a little less than two hours before work today and got in 400 hands of 50nl and 170 of 100nl. Ran pretty good at 50nl and ended my session +$177. 100 nl was pretty uneventful with no interesting HH's and ended -$4 for the session.
Here's a hand from the 50nl session where I think I missed out on some value.
Hero is in the cutoff with JT and villian is a good reg 20/16/5 over 4k hands in MP
$0.50 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players[/b]
10/15/14 So only got to play a couple hours again today but wasn’t upset with the volume. I will be going away till the Sunday the 19th when I plan on putting in a big session while watching my fantasy team players do work, as the Jets certainly won’t. So on to the update: I was able to get in 500 hands of 50nl for a loss of -51 and 200 hands of 100nl for +36. Overall I think I played really well and was able to exploit one fish in 50nl who was playing like 64/35/17 over a 100 hands, by three betting him much lighter than usual. Then eventually got it all in with TPTK against his TPWK. That got me close to break even in the session after an unlucky start to run KK into AA.
So I’m going to continue to include HH’s with each one of these updates because even though this thread hasn’t gained any traction yet just writing them out helps me I think them through. I think I played this hand well but I'm up for debate. Villian is playing a 42/7/3 line and calls a 3bet only 13% of the time.
So back from my trip, thought i was going to be able to put in a live 1/3 session but turns out I didn't have the time. Either way going to out in a lot of volume today while I'm watching my 2-3-1 fantasy team hopefully put up a big win over a rival to get to even on the year.
Also have a report to add from the last session I put in before I left on 10/16. It was a relatively short session and also a bad one. I started off with some run bad and ended up playing like my B/C game as I tried to get unstuck (due to calling light and making some very suspect plays). It wasn't even too bad of beats that I took to tilt me, i think it was more of just the fact that I forced in a session when I shouldnt have.
Here's the last hand of the session and one that really made it a bad session after I had fought back some. Villian is playing 35/12/7 over 600 hands.
fold, Hero raises to 3 BB, fold, SB raises to 6 BB, fold, Hero raises to 14 BB, SB calls 8 BB
Flop:(29 BB, 2 players) 8 T J SB checks, Hero bets 16 BB, SB raises to 35 BB, Hero raises to 88.26 BB and is all-in, SB calls 53.26 BB
Turn:(205.52 BB, 2 players) T
River:(205.52 BB, 2 players) A
Spoiler:
SB shows J J (Full House, Jacks full of Tens) (Pre 18%, Flop 84%, Turn 95%) Hero mucks K K (Two Pair, Kings and Tens) (Pre 82%, Flop 16%, Turn 5%) SB wins 199.52 BB
The worst part of this hand is my shove on the flop, What calls me here? Pretty much all hands that have me absolutely crushed ie: sets and less common but also possible straights. I get called a fair amount of time from straight (none to likely in his range) and flush draws but almost never against one pair hands that I crush. I think the flop should have been a call and the turn a check fold. Let me know your thoughts, because this type of hand is a major leak and one where I should be able to get away from much easier.
Hopefully I can pad the bankroll a little more with a couple of long grind sessions today. Also I should be completing so bonuses which will help a little bit.

10/19/14: Put in a little less hands than I had wanted to but played and ran well. Also played more 100nl table's then 50nl for the first time due to table selection. I put in 450 hands at 100nl for +$133 and 200 hands at 50 nl for +$26. Gonna try for about 700 more hands today or so and might change my goals from a set number of hands in each stake to just a set number of total hands. Overall this session didn't have too many tough decisions and really I didn't win or lose a pot over 50BB in either stake, so I guess I can do some studying and maybe look if I could have extracted some more value from hands. Other than that since there were not any tough spots so I don't have any HHs to review.
I'm gonna try to put in about 700-800 hands today at both stakes and just really table select and what ever tables are softer play in those. It really has been a leak for me that I take the first tables that are open rather than look around and stay away from the better regs and exploit the bad regs.
Monday and Tuesday’s sessions were some of the roughest I have ever had. Running 300 dollars below EV didn’t help but I also played tilted after my 4th lost flip or better in a row. The sad part is I don’t even really think the EV was accurate as I ran much much worse than it stated. Villains were showing up with hands that they should never have ever in spots, for example here’s a hand in 100nl where I lost 83BB
CO raises to 3 BB, BTN calls 3 BB, fold, Hero calls 2 BB
Flop:(9.5 BB, 3 players) 3 Q 6 Hero checks, CO bets 6.73 BB, fold, Hero raises to 14 BB, CO calls 7.27 BB
Turn:(37.5 BB, 2 players) K Hero bets 26.62 BB, CO calls 26.62 BB
River:(90.74 BB, 2 players) 9 Hero bets 39.28 BB and is all-in, CO calls 39.28 BB
Spoiler:
Hero shows 3 3 (Three of a Kind, Threes) (Pre 48%, Flop 93%, Turn 82%) CO shows 6 7 (Flush, King High) (Pre 52%, Flop 7%, Turn 18%) CO wins 167.3 BB
Sure my raise on the flop should have probably been a little bit bigger setting up a turn shove, but seriously when does this guy ever show up with this here?
Let me know what you guys think of these hands, whether they are just bad beats or spew and how i can improve upon playing them.
All told the damage was -$475 with -$375 in 50nl and -$100 in 100nl
which puts me at -$293 since the thread began and a bankroll of $2600
Hands Played 5700/8500
Hopefully my next session will involve less spew and run bad and I can get back to my A game. I really want to be able to put in $3000 from my online roll by november 1st for my 1/3 bankroll but its not looking good now. I just hope this run bad doesn't continue when im grinding live.
So since my spew/downswing sessions in the beginning of the week I have recovered nicely and put in some real number is the last three days. Collectively I have 4100 hands between 100nl and 50nl. That means I have surpassed my goal in hands by quite some bit. During those three days I am overall happy with my play and remained fairly tilt free throughout. I managed to be up +$349 in 50nl and down -$103 in 100nl. Making a profit of +246.
Feels good to be dragging myself out of this downswing and know I can finish off the first part of my challenge strong if I continue to play well.
So since this tread began I'm at -$30 through OVER 9000!!!!!! hands. Also I've gotten over $100 in bonuses since the thread started so my bankroll has actually grown some even though I have a slightly negative profit so far. All told the bankroll is at 3000. I'm gonna put in some numbers this week to try to bring that up and also clear a bonus I have been working on.
I know they shouldn't but these overbet shoves always confused. To me these hands are very polarized, either its the nuts or a very vulnerable hand. In this hand I wrongly assumed the later, especially due to this specific villain tendency to overvalue his hand. Also I check flop because he had like a 95% CBet frequency, however I still should have raise flop to get value from all overpairs, two overs and drawing hands that he wouldnt throw away.
This next hand is against a similar villain and another case of an overbet shove.
Hero shows Q A (Two Pair, Queens and Jacks) (Pre 74%, Flop 92%, Turn 95%) BTN mucks A 7 (Two Pair, Jacks and Sevens) (Pre 26%, Flop 8%, Turn 5%) Hero wins 259.78 BB
This is just an example of an aggrofish who I had to call real wide. Im pretty comfortable with my decision here because all over pairs can be eliminated because of the preflop action. 44, 77, Q7 are all possible but the villain is so wide here that TPTK should be good a vast majority of the time.
As I said earlier in the post Im gonna continue to put in some volume this week and hopefully have a health bankroll for live 1/3 for the first of Nov.
Update: Put in about 2500 hands since the last update with a profit of +$120 in that time. Putting me at +$90 since the thread began and a bankroll of $3100. I think I played pretty well but made a few bad mistakes calling too light but nothing too awful.
I also played a 10K guaranteed tournament for $100 with a bonus ticket and totally ****ed up. These tickets are the highest +ev use of the points earned but I have ran terribly in them so far. I think ive played 4 or 5 so far without a cash. The one I played today was just poor shove with 18BB with AQo. It might just be that Im not a very experienced MTT player or I look at is money not coming from my bankroll but i think I play awful in these tournaments. Oh well I expect at least something like $60-70 +ev from each ticket and so far I am a huge loser. Either way ill stick to cash when it actually comes to money from my bankroll being wagered.
It also turns out that I won't be starting my job till a little bit later on so I'll be able to put in some larger volume than I thought at least in the beginning of the month. Therefore I'm gonna up the volume of the challenge to 100 hours of play for november. This should be very doable, especially if I'm able to put in 30-40 hours of play in the first couple weeks of the month.
Here's a pretty embarrassing hand from today and 100nl.
Online grind is over, put in my last session today. Overall added about 250 to the bankroll, most of the that through bonuses but a fair amount through play. Here are my stats since the thread began:
Overall pretty happy with my play, running about 500 dollars below ev isnt fun but I know I played well and am more than capable of beating the game. Which gives me a lot of confidence knowing that the play in 50 and 100nl online is much much better than 1/3 and even 2/5 live. So my roll for live will be about 3600 or 12 full buy ins. About 3150 of this coming from my online roll. My first live session will probably be this sunday or monday. I would like to get in my first session of the month saturday but I will be busy with moving stuff for most of the weekend. As I also reiterated in a previous post I won't start a job till at least the middle of the month, so looking to put in 30-40 hours each week for the first two weeks of november. Also looking to eclipse about 100-110 hours in the month of november.
First official 1/3 live session after the challenge began today. Put in a 4 hour and 20 minute session and booked a cool $208 profit. Got stuck early when I ran into the top of a couple villains ranges but got back into the positives and then some. Had a couple of good players at my table but also some really loose aggressive spewy players so I think it was to my benefit to stay. Overall i think I played pretty well but missed some value spots. Here's one where I think I could have taken a different line that would have been more +ev:
Villain was playing extremely loose and aggressive. He loves bluffing in spots where he thinks he has even some fold equity, for the majority of the game he was on my right but for this hand he hand recently seat changed to two seats to my left. Villain has 175 and I cover, other villain stacks are irrelevant but I cover.
Hero is UTG with KK and raises to 15 pre. Villain UTG+2 calls, 2 other players call one in MP and one in LP.
Flop comes T93 rainbow
Hero Cbets 35, Villain raises to 100 and other players fold, Hero shoves and Villain folds for his last 60.
I think here I can just smooth call for the 100 and check the turn allowing him to shove. He will do this a majority of the time when he thinks he can take it down. He also probably lets go all combos of Ts and possibly even 9s when I reraise flop but shoves them when checked to on the turn. Thoughts?
Also I'll be keeping track of my bankroll and adding all profits over $8/hr to my bankroll until i am satisfied with how I am rolled. So for this session I will be adding 170 to my roll and taking 38 out.
Cliff notes:
Hours: 4.3
Profit: $208
hourly: 48/hr
Bankroll: 3500 + 170= 3670
Yesterdays session started off very similar to monday's, was stuck early and rallied back for a winning session. Overall I'm not sure I liked my play. Here is probably the most significant example.
Hero's image is probably more toward Nitty rather than TAG as he's been card dead for most of the session. Villain has been at the table for about 45mins but is very tight and has not stepped out of line so far. Showing only one hand (AKs which did not go to showdown but villain paired his king and flashed his cards to me after everyone folded to his CBet.)
Hero has 600 and covers Villains 230
1/3 NL Hero is in for the BB with Q4o, 2 limps from the EP and one from LP, folds around to villain in the SB who completes. Hero checks
FLOP (12): QQJ rainbow
Villain checks, Hero checks, EP bets 10, LP folds, Villain calls, Hero raises to 35, EP folds, Villain makes it 85. Hero tanks then calls
TURN (192) QQJc 6c bringing in a second club
Villain shoves for his last 140. Hero tank calls.
River (472) 10c
Villain shows AQ and hero flashes the Q and mucks
This is probably the worst hand that Ive played so far in these two sessions. What else does villain show up here with but Qx? and I am dominated by most of them. This is an easy flop fold from this player and something I talked myself out of in the hand. It is such an easy fold.
Even with that $200+ mistake I was able to end the session +$262 in 6hours and 40mins.
I've also decided to continue to take out $8/hr out of each winning session, but losing sessions the bankroll will not be touched. This hopefully will allow me to get to 20BI's in a relatively short time so I can be very comfortable with my roll, and from there shot take 2/5. So for this session that will be all but $52 going to the roll.
Have some stuff to set up around the apartment during the day but hopefully I can finish with that relatively quickly and maybe put in at least a 3-4 hour session later.
Also wanted to add a life goal challenge in as well. Not as in shape as I want to be so ill be trying to run about 10 miles a week. Put in a 3 mile run this morning that had me huffing and puffing by the end of it. Will be getting a gym membership soon but until then I'm just gonna try to run 3-4 times a week to get into better shape. I think it will also allow me to stay better focused for long sessions if I'm in as good of shape as possible.
Just a quick update as I don't really have any HHs to share from todays session. Was only able to put in a 3 hour and 30 min session but played well and also ran well. Got stuck a little early running into a call stations top of his range, then doubled up through an aggro fish when I flopped middle set and he flopped two pair. Ended the session up 371. Gonna take 31 out for a little more than $8/hr and add 340 to the roll.
So had a pretty rough day. I started off +106, for a short 2 hour and 40 min session then went on a lunch break. I wanted a to find an action table for when I got back and unfortunately got just that. Ended up punting off 700 in pretty marginal spots. I'll share one of them because I actually don't mind this play too too much.
Background: table is extremely loose, bets of 15 are getting to the flop 4-5 ways. Hero has been TAG bordering on nitty and has not shown down a hand with villain.
Villain seems to be a pretty competent lag, maybe a little bluff happy but the reasoning behind that might have some meta game as it was against another lag reg.
Villain has been at the table for about an hour and in that time had anywhere from a 1000 stack to a 300 dollar stack at anyone point. Splashing around alot and 3beting and re-raising all streets, most of which not going to showdown. On to the hand.
Hero has 290 and Villain covers
Folds to Villain UTG+2 who makes it 15. Two callers in LP and Hero in SB has JJ. Hero 3bets to 60, Villain thinks for 20-30secs and bets 305 putting hero all in. Thoughts?
I started off the day yesterday with a nice 3.5 mile run, where I ran into a gentleman who needed his car jumped. So having just started my run I turned around and got my car to help him out. This little bit of good will would not help me run good in my session though.
I played a 7 hour and 45 min session that started off beautifully but just went down hill from there. I got AA against KK in the first 10 hands and was +200 and won a couple more small pots to be +300 and ended the day -589. A couple small errors but mostly people just getting there in AI pots where I am ahead. I played sort of tilty when I ran my TPTK with a flush redraw into AA twice in a row. The first time was a standard shove and +ev by me the second time against a nitty opponent was -ev and was due to tilt and bricking out on the previous hand.
Hours: 26.75
Profit:-$342
hourly: -12.8/hr
Bankroll: $3031
Miles ran this week:3.5/10
So I'm gonna change some things. I'm not gonna take an hourly out of my winning sessions until I reach a bankroll of $4500 and anytime I get below that I will not take one until I get there again. Also I'm gonna switch to more standard TAG until I get out of this downswing, then I will play a more loose profitable line. Putting in another 4-5 hour session today. Gogogogogogo
Got going yesterday with a nice 2 mile run to clear my head from the session the day before. Knew I wasn't able to put in a long session but went in with a good mindset. Within the first couple hands I was tested. I raise 88 in the button over two EP limpers to 18, blinds fold and both limpers call. I have 300 and Villain in EP has 100. Flop of 9s6s2 checks to me and I bet 40, EP shoves for ~82 total, I call. Villain is a reg who I have so experience with who loves to get it in on draws. I call 42 and turn and river brick out MHIG. From there I lost a 200 hand with the second nut flush against the nuts. Both got there on the river and I made the decision to just call his 1/2 pot sized bet instead of raising it. To be honest I think this was a mistake because he is overvaluing any 2pair+ hand including all lower flushes than mine. Rebought to 300 after this hand.
Here's a HH from a hand a little later in the session. Villain 1 plays almost ATC preflop and will continue on almost any board with anypair or draw. He's been all in 4 times to get to where he is now, winning everytime and with marginal holdings.
Hero has 500 UTG+2, Villain 1 has 400 HJ Villain 2 has 250 in SB.
Hero raises to 18 from UTG+2 over 1 limper, V1 calls, V2 calls from SB
FLOP (56) 22c9c
SB checks Hero bets 40, V1 calls, V2 folds
TURN (136) 22c9c 8
Hero bets 65, V1 calls
River (266) 22c9c 8 3
Hero bets 125, V1 calls. Hero shows JJ and V1 mucks
I like how i played this hand, going for three streets of value against this opponent is optimum because He will pretty much always let me know when he has a 2 and will call down with all club draws and pretty much any combo of 9x. I would have liked to have gone for more value 1/2-2/3 pot sized bets on each street.
Overall I put in a 4 hour session and made +$832 in profit.
Hours: 30.75
Profit: $490
hourly: 16/hr
Bankroll: $3863
Miles ran this week: 5.5/10
gonna put in a long session on friday evening/ night then one on saturday during the day
