Small background : I started playing poker when I was 16 online. I loved it. Made a few thousand dollars and never looked back. I stopped playing online when I was 18 and switched to live games. I played my way through college, paying tuition and living expenses. I went broke at 19 then again at 21. After that I started using bankroll management. I strictly play live games now and do not play online. I enjoy the live game much better.
For the last 4-5 years I have played about 20 hours a week. I started at 1/2 buying in for 100$. I slowly began building a bankroll. Two years ago it was steady at 50,000$. I took a year off because of my real job. I started back at 2/5 and have now worked my way up to 120,000$. Was a lot to manage working 35 hours a week then commuting 80 miles to the closest casino to play 20 hours a week too. I played occasional 5/10 a long the way but from going broke twice earlier I learned not to play out of my means. (I like to have at LEAST 100 buy-ins for any game I play -- 5/10 buy-ins are usually 1,500$).
I've worked way too hard to take 50,000$ out of my poker bank roll (which is separate from my "life" bankroll) and move to a high limit game to see where I'm at. That's too much gamble and greed for me. I'd like to slowly (but progressively) work up the ladder.
NOW - I am on a 6 month hiatus from my job (as an analyst at fidelity investments). I plan on playing Poker full time. I found an apartment in commerce and am moving there in two weeks. I'm going to grind day in and day out for 6 months and see if I really have the chops to do what I love to do and support myself at the same time. I won't settle for making anything less than 150,000$ a year (because I could almost make that in a few years at my current job). If I do not see traction in 6 months, I'm going to move back home and go back to my job. If I do see traction, I could always get that job back if I wanted it and will continue playing.
I do NOT play online and do NOT play tournaments. I don't even know of anyone who makes a living playing JUST cash games but I'm sure they are out there.
This will be a real challenge. I'll keep you guys posted in this thread about what happens. If anyone makes a good living off here playing strictly cash games feel free to contact me. I would love to have a chat with you and take some tips. Anyway, wish me luck!
