Considering your wrists, this might be the last trip you can realistically do, so you really need to be in a good spot financially. If you can save up 1 year living expenses and 2k for online poker, or say 5k for live poker, then you'd be in a great spot, assuming that you find your way in poker, to become a pro. If you end up having to leave the ship early or something, 1k, and 6m living expenses would probably be enough to be rather safe assuming you can win. But for live poker you need at least 5k or so if you're starting at 1/2, and variance is more of a factor.
