As i mentioned above i had a really strong start to the year and was winning about 12k. Then went all the back to up 2k (20ish bi) in a matter of 3 days. Feel like i'm playing super well, but I've got a lot of university work to do over the next 6 weeks. I want to make sure i don't neglect pio work but i kinda have to prioritise other stuff rn. Also I'm moving out of my current house on the 7th Feb and moving in with my girlfriend. We're looking for a place atm but there's a real scarcity in the market right now. and breaaaaaath....

Last weekend i was at uni and the topic was working with refugees. It was really interesting to gain an insight into the way in which refugees are portrayed in the news and media, but also how therapeutic approaches will differ, particularly with the potential for working alongside interpretaters etc. I certainly had a whole load of preset conceptions that were strongly challenged.

Tomorrow i have another weekend and the topic is eating disorders. I've heard it's another super informative one so i'm looking forward to that too.

Back to the grind Tuesday.

I did some work with refugees doing employment and interview coaching a few years ago. Their stories completely blew my mind and really gave me a reason to reassess some of my views. Also made me realise how lucky I am.

I, obviously, don't expect you to write up whole lecture, but could you elaborate on this part, at least a bit? I'm super curious about every sentence: portrayal, approach differences (how? why?), what presets were challenged, why did you have them in the first place (if it's not too personal)?

Hey man. By no means am i an expert but here are a few thoughts.

With regard to portrayal in the media, depending on whether you read left or right leaning newspapers, the way in which refugees are portrayed will be starkly different. Take the Sun for example (right leaning newspaper); images of refugees are generally of brown, aggressive looking men, usually on boats. A paper such as the Guardian (centre left) will ordinarily have pictures of women or children behind fences (portraying vulnerability). These are selective examples, but depending on the media you read/images you're exposed to, they will obviously evoke feelings, reactions, and shape belief systems around certain groups of people.

Further, the language in papers, news and social media is really interesting. An example of this is the use of terms such as 'economic migrant' (someone who has migrated for work reason as oppose to escaping conflict in their home country). It has become palatable for both refugees and the general public to use economic migrant instead of the word refugee which has all sorts of connotations attached to it (namely due to media the media).

In relation to my own preset conceptions, it has been extremely easy for me to turn a blind eye to issues around migration/refugees. Perhaps that is due to my privilege as a white, british (i'm actually mixed race but can 'pass' as white) man. But also for me, I realised on the weekend that i have a really difficult time connecting to the experience of refugees. My mum is an immigrant from Mauritius and my dad is british. They were both aid workers for many years until i was born. My dad then spent a great deal of his working life in East and West Africa, particularly in areas of extreme conflict - Sierra Leone, Burundi and Rwanda. Some of the stories that my dad has told me (i was too young for him to tell me when it was actually happening) of being amongst Hutu and Tutsi tribes slaughtering one another in the street, are truly the things of nightmares.

I know this may seem like a bit of a leap and it is just an interpretation, but, if you witness these atrocities first hand, the traumatic response cannot be understated. For him to come back from such places where he was literally in life threatening situations, there is no way that i, a small child, did not unconsciously experience what he had/continued to go through when he got home. Of course he was able to take this stuff to therapy, but that wasn't really a consideration for me as a 3 year old. With that in mind, it comes as no surprise to me that i would want to avoid any such feelings and disconnect myself from the idea that people have to flee their homes, not out of choice, but because their lives depend on it.

This is pretty much the thing that i connected to over that weekend. A lot of stuff emerged for me - feelings of rage, deep sadness and curiously, shame. It's all rather unformulated still and something I'm going to continue unpacking in my own therapy.

Feel free to respond/debate/ask anything else too!

January Results

Sup! January all wrapped up and we had a winner. Feels kinda weird to have had several months of variance free grind - long may it continue! Played a good mix of 500 and 1k, zoom and regular. My study has been lower than usual but that's simple unavoidable with university work and other stuff.

Also I was due to move into my new house on the 7th feb - contracts signed, holding fee paid, references done and then the ultimate bad beat happened... So we’re arranging our bills for the new place and my job is internet. Looking for internet and everything is coming back with super slow speeds. Turns out the flats in this building have some kinda dead zone for internet. Can’t get fibre and the fastest speeds are 11mbps download and 1mbps upload.... given I’m gunna be doing Skype calls for therapy sessions and poker, last night i had to back out of the tenancy. It's totally nuts that in this day and age, in London there are still places that can't offer fastest internet services. Fortunately my holding deposit was only £415 cus i won't be getting that back.

Anyway, I'm gunna basically be homeless as of next weekend haha. Will have to put my stuff in storage and crash at my gf's place - no space for a desk or anything unfortunately.

Enough of that, results!

Stake breakdown

Will get back on the house search this weekend/week but i imagine volume is gunna be looooow.

Hope people crushed jan and gl is feb!

peace <3

I have money invested yeah. Me and the uk crew own a student property too.

It's difficult to say man. I'm no where near clued up enough to give a well-rounded answer. What impact do you suspect brexit will have on poker?

In short, we found a new house - internet was gunna be fine for the flats next door, but the actual address was unsearchable on the BT website. Call up and they're like yeah, 7mb download, 0.8mb upload. i'm like wat, you serious? So yeah, had to bail on another place looool. Fortunately we had another viewing and it was ideal. I'm moving in on friday!

Showdown:
BU (Hero) shows Q 9 (three of a kind, Tens)
(Equity - Pre-Flop: 52%, Flop: 33%, Turn: 27%, River: 0%)

MP shows 2 2 (a full house, Tens full of Twos)
(Equity - Pre-Flop: 48%, Flop: 67%, Turn: 73%, River: 100%)

MP wins $647.34

Will be packing up and moving over the next few days so likely no grind.

Not a lot to report. I've moved into a flat with my gf and it's been pretty much a bomb site since. Slowly getting there wrt making it a home. My office is pretty much setup however we don't get internet until the 24th. Until then i'm tethering on my phone but honestly i have felt a bit too overwhelmed with the move to really crack down and grind poker. Will fire some 200nl this evening/tomorrow to ease myself back into the mix.

Hopefully people are crushing feb (flex)
