Daily Update - Sat 16/09

Hours Played: 10.1
Profit: $420

Notes: 8 In a row baby! Equal longest win streak currently, hoping to extend that a couple more to the fabled 10 session win streak over the next couple days. Was extreeeemely card dead today and probably made a couple bad plays too...

Like BTN straddle, SB calls, UTG opens $25, hero 3! IP w KQo to $75 (don't want to call the open and don't want to fold). V calls. Flop AJ2 and we cbet $80. I don't like this because his range will have a high density of Ax hands like AK, AQ, AJ, JJ, etc. It's different online where the A high board generally favours the PFR range but this spot I actually think this board favours the PFC.

So what I learnt from today is that I just need to be a little more conscientious as to peoples ranges on boards in 3bet pots and whether I have the fold equity to cbet or not. Like in the above example, our 3bet nets us enough profit preflop when they fold that we can afford to be a little weak post with just a gutshot (essentially no equity).

Hand 1

It's about 10 hours into the session now, people getting a little restless...
BB tries to open muck thinking he was UTG, dealer give him his cards back and says you're BB. Pretty sure me and BB were the only two players aware of this...
Hero opens ATo UTG (5 handed) to $15, BTN calls, BB squeezes to $85. I didn't think twice about 4betting to $175 - is he ******ed? He can never have anything here... I just saw him try to open muck his hand... Fold fold. He said he had J3s and congratulated me for being switched on lol. Was a nice pot.

================================================

It's 6am now on Sunday morning, I'm about to head to bed. I'm not sure if a holdem game will get up tonight at the Penthouse - if it does I'll play that but it could end up being a rotation which I will pass on. I'll play at the casino most likely if this happens, or take the night off. Should have a couple games lined up for Mon/Tues still so can afford to miss a Sunday. Though really, I should go to the casino still because it'll be fairly juicy.

Anyway, that's it for now. Will update some time tomorrow!

GL on the felt lads.

Grats Meale. I'm on a bit of a heater this past week as well. Set a new peak. Proud of my self for gaining small profits while running bad/dead the week prior. Good job being self aware. I don't always 3! KQo IP, but certainly incorporate that into my play when table and image are right. Much more likely to do it in MP to get absolute position than somewhere in CO or BTN.

Also impressed by your stamina at the table. I prefer playing shorter sessions & starting early. I already crash ~2am and feel that's a bit too late, but I'm all about circadian rhythm. I get the games get better late, but feel a well rested me from noon to midnight is better than a dazed me from 6pm - 6am.

Cheers bruv, good to hear you're also doing good on the felt.

I'll admit the schedule caaan be a little tough at times, but still not half as bad as forcing myself up at 3:30am to drive to a normal job! ATM I'm probably getting up at 3pm ish and then gymming and heading to a game. Finishing up maybe 3-6am roughly. Tonight was tough actually, I got up at 6pm and really could have just slept through til 6am fairly easily but I didn't want to waste the day (night) - that's on the back of a solid 12 hour sleep. It's also tough when trying to socialise with people on a normal schedule. I have brunch with mum and sister tomorrow and that'll likely mean I'll be fairly tired getting up earlyish.

But imo, the EV of making sure the grunt of your volume is played during the wee hours where people are playing their worst poker is incredible. Last night for example, at the 10 hour mark, I forced myself to take a 1 minute break, and come back fully focused. At that point you notice some weird ****. I.e. people trying to muck their cards and then squeezing.... Stacks get short and people are shoving $100 with weak top pairs, people are tired and want to gambol for the remainder of their chips.

If you want to go pro with this thing, you'll have to make sure you're available to play during these times because it really does turn from poker to bingo incredibly quick once the small hand passes the 3. Just make sure you eat healthy, get enough sleep, and exercise and that should be enough to remain relatively healthy while ****tinf all over the face of your circadian rhythm.

Reevaluating Weekly Expenses

So after tracking expenses for a couple weeks, I've decided to adjust slightly how I'm spending my money. Originally, it looked like this:

Phone: $2 per week
Rent + Internet: $280 per week
Electricity: $15 per week
Gym: $15.95 per week
Domain: $0.25 per week
Hosting: $1.95 per week
Groceries: $75 per week
Cheat meal: $25 per week
Coffee: $35 per week
Misc household items: $25 per week
Gifts: $5.85 per week
Clothing: $15 per week
Emergency: $20 per week
Social: $50 per week
Total: $550

Couple things I want to change about this. Phone, rent, electricity, gym, hosting will all remain the same. Domain costs, I want to increase slightly because I own www.chatphilosophy.net that I feel has some value and @ $11 a year to renew, could be a good thing to hang onto for the time being. So "domain" costs are up to $0.46 per week now. I also want to add a "books" allocation because as I mentioned earlier, I want to spend more of my free time reading. I'll only put $7 per week into this which should get me one book per month. Groceries also needs to change. ATM I think I can get by on $25 a week for groceries because most of my food is payed for by homegames. The only other food I need each week is oatmeal, milk, Greek yoghurt, and bananas. So we'll reduce the groceries allocation to $25. Cheat meal, well, I really really value the ability to stroll down to a cafe and get breakfast/brunch. I'd like to be able to do this more than just once a week, so I'll allow for two of these 'cheat meals' - BTW this isn't a dietary cheat, I have no set diet. The reason they're cheat meals is because they're expensive and in a way I'm cheating my finances. It's currently at $25, which is silly because coffee is a separate criterion meaning if I make this $40, that should allow me two decent meals out per week. It's the small things in life right!? Coffee, we'll reduce to $30 a week I think. This is because I'll skip the coffee when I play homegames and have them make me a coffee instead. So coffees are really just for casino sessions now. Misc household items, honestly, I don't see that number ever really getting up near $25. Like even if I got everything I need in a week, I think it'd be less. So let's reduce that number to $20. Gifts, I think can stay at $5.85 - it's my sister's birthday next week and I really should get her something. But after that, there won't be any gift purchasing til Christmas! Thank fk. Clothing @ $15 a week I feel is prrrooooobably still fine... I have a house party coming up and I'll probably need to buy some **** for the theme for that. Might want to up this one to $20 at some later stage, just so I can buy some more "poker attire" because I feel like I wear mostly the same **** to each game each week. But I don't really care, so will keep it at $15 for now. Emergency can stay at $20. And then there's the social fund. With the current changes, our weekly expenses are totaling $521.21, which is a decent saving from $550. For the time being, I don't think we need to reduce total expenses, so it's more about shifting them around and relieving pressure in certain areas, like cheat meals and social funds. What I'll do is increase the social fund by $21.79 to get us back to that $550 number. This effectively gives us another $20 per week to enjoy socialising on our night's off. Remembering of course, this $70 social fund, if not spent in any week rolls over til the following week. I didn't go out this past week so that means I can "save" this money for the big forthcoming houseparty nights next month.

Revised Expenses:

Phone: $2 per week
Rent + Internet: $280 per week
Electricity: $15 per week
Gym: $15.95 per week
Domain: $0.46 per week
Hosting: $1.95 per week
Groceries: $25 per week
Cheat meal: $40 per week
Coffee: $30 per week
Misc household items: $20 per week
Gifts: $5.85 per week
Clothing: $15 per week
Emergency: $20 per week
Books: $7 per week
Social: $71.79 per week
Total: $550

So with these changes, I should be able to enjoy an extra meal out on my day(s) off each week as well as have less pressure when I go out and party as to what I can spend. This should help me stay on budget nicely.

Will continue tracking expenses each week and will post brief recaps here to keep myself accountable. This week it's currently Sunday night and I've spent a total of $7.61 since Friday - so expenses are actually right down. Mostly thanks to the homegames paying for the majority of the food I eat each week. The other thing I definitely have benefited from is the fasting. I'm not trying to hit any macro targets and don't have any set eating windows as such, but just getting up in the morning (arvo) and training before I eat puts my metabolism into a really good place.

================================================

Anyway, it's about 8:30pm on Sunday evening now. I've got breakfast with the fam at 9:30am tomorrow. Tonight I'm going to swing by one of the pubs and catch up with a friend from my old job before heading to the casino. I'll look to play maybe 3-5 hours there before coming home and relaxing - probably netflix for a bit, doubt I'll be that tired. Hopefully will get a few hours sleep before having to get up for brekky.

GL to all those on the grind today!

Keeping on top of expenditure is so important for financial success. Doing everything you can to limit outgoing and build savings is so +ev in the long run.

However this is coming from someone with no ability to save or limit outgoings so take it with a pinch of salt...

Yeah 100%. Think I've done a decent job so far but always room for improvement.

The trick is not to get a plan, buy the headset separately. I'm actually "paying" $18 a month but dad's paying most of it still since we've been on the plan for many years now. That gets me unlimited talk and text and 4gb data which is plenty for me.

No Foxtel obv. Don't see the point. I scrub off mum's Netflix account lol but other than that I don't watch any TV, YouTube is plenty good for me. Internet is high speed fibre that's included in my rent. It's NBN ****. No subs to poker sites.

Agree with the late night thing although seems like it would extremely taxing on your body long term. People also really underestimate how important breaks are for your game. Literally the difference between misreading your hand, calling a shove pre with A4 and folding and being up in the session (Have seen this happen a few times).

It's honestly not that taxing if you're still getting enough sleep and aren't degen eating/drinking/not working out etc. But ofc, taking breaks is definitely +EV. Something I forget to do enough of during long sessions.

Daily Update - Sun 17/09

Hours played: 3
Profit: -$151
Notes: Annoying ****ty little session at the casino. Super standard spots, didn't win any hands, played maybe 50 hands total, it's so ridiculously slow there. Had a reg come in briefly just to berate the place and left lmfao.

Pity that our win streak has to end on such a note but no doubt we'll have some more extended runs, and some longer ones!

Heading home now, have to be up and at breakfast in 8 hours. Might watch Netflix for a bit but I'm going to be rekt in the morning anyway because I won't be able to sleep for a while yet.

Hopefully get to a juicy rotstion game tomorrow night, will update after that!

Taking breaks is hugely +EV, even if you're not tired or tilted. Even just like a 5 minute walk around the casino or area and just tune your mind away from the game. Ask yourself, honestly, how you're playing and if you're playing bad, what you need to do differently. Then take your mind completely off of poker and re-charge for the next 2 or 3 hours.

Big +1

buy a coffee machine imo, u can get fairly good ones for like 600, instead of spending 1500 a year for one below average coffee a day

I responded to the coffee machine suggestion a bit earlier. I also fail to see how a proper barrista made coffee could be below average or of lower quality than anything you'd get from a coffee machine. There's just something about a real coffee that I like!

Daily Update - Monday 18/09

Hours Played: 5.1
Profit: $650
Game: $1/$2 PLO + $2/$5 NLH Rotation

Notes: Don't think I've had a losing session that involved PLO yet. I applied my strategy of buying in short to keep variance low and hopefully secure some easy double ups in bloated pots. I decided to leave fairly early in the night because, although the rules of the game stated you could not double rebuy (because it's supposed to be a small PLO game for PLO newbs), one guy was stuck $3k and asked everyone at the table if we were happy for him to top up to $1k. Ofc I wasn't going to be the ONE guy to say no, so we allowed it. And suddenly, we were playing PLO with everyone >$1k. A $5k pot went down and I decided it was time to call an hour and get out.

Overall fairly card dead all night. Did win one nice pot though where essentially I had top boat vs second top boat vs third top boat in PLO and this enabled me to triple up my $300 stack.

Today's session also marks the first 300 hours coming to fruition. It's not really a milestone but I'll definitely stop and review every 500 hours. All is going fairly well so far and we're sloooowly increasing the hourly.

Tomorrow I believe there will be another 1/2PLO+2/3NLH running that I've got a seat for. The game will play a bit smaller than tonight's game because it's a slightly smaller NLH and average stacks just seem to be smaller. So looking to put a good grind in tomorrow and then take Wednesday off for some RnR.

Considering for more than 50% of the volume I've played my winnings have been negative, I'm fairly content with the current progress.

Crushing buddy, loving it! Any concerns about burnout or boredom yet? Voice concerns early and we can try and find ways to help before they're actual problems.

None whatsoever mate! Still living the absolute dream. Only concern I have ATM is that tonight's game is only 50/50 so if that falls through I might have to go to the casino. Which I hate. :')

But no, all is going really really well, happier than ever and really enjoying the grind.
