Hey everyone, cheers for all the support and kind words. They are much appreciated! Really good to see a fair few other HU guys in here, too. I got hit with a PG&C curse yesterday, with an absolute stinker of a day to start proceedings. I got jungle'd pretty hard by Mr. Cates . I’ll try to get through all of these initial questions without skipping any. Because there’s a bit more than I was expecting I may answer briefly to some, and leave some open to perhaps discuss at length at a later day.
Anyway, I’ll get cracking.

- At what stakes/games did you get started at?
- How did you end up playing HU?
- What tools did you use to improve (ie. coaching, books, etc.)?
- How many sessions did you play on average a week and how long were they?
- What is your BRM like? (Ie. how many buy ins do u need at all times at w/e stake you're playing at, do u have a stoploss, how often do u take shots, etc.)
- What are the biggest pros you've played against?

I wish u all the best. subbed
Hey mate, glad to hear you’re on the rise.

I think the first games I had any success at was 180 man tourneys, the absolute lowest buy in. I then moved to low 6max SNG’s and even dabbled in some 6max cash (I think 10nl and some 25nl) before I found heads-up. The lowest stakes were still 50nl back then on stars/fulltilt, so it took a bit of time to get there. But I instantly fell in love with HU the minute I laid eyes on it. It’s pretty much everything I loved all in one game.

I’m a notoriously poor studier off the felt, I had some coaching on the way up in the earlier years which helped me grow a lot faster than ever could have without it. But mainly just playing hands, playing the toughest people I could find at the lowest stakes possible and continually improving that way.
Back in the glory days when there was action all over the shop I would grind somewhere around 130 hours a month. Probably something like 5 hours a day and 25 days a month on average. Sorry if that doesn’t fully address the question, but I’m really not sure on session lengths. Some were 20 mins, some were 15 hours .

I’m always nitty with BRM since I turned pro, always over 100 buy ins. Although in the early days I was a feisty young cub rolling around with 15BI and thinking absolutely nothing of it, but so was everyone back then!
I can’t believe I’m speaking like a true veteran, I never thought I’d see the day. Will take some getting used to.

Biggest pros I've played with are all online guys. If you just mean like 1 hand I've played pretty much all the big dogs. But if you mean semi-proper battles it would just be guys like Jungle, Wilhasha, sauce, raul (not sure if he's considered big, but I like the bloke so we'll chuck him in this category) whenever I can get them at 10/20 haha. But fully proper battles against very good players like donger and swarmm are pretty common, gets the juices flowing. I like beating up Voselgang whenever he posts too.

I feel a lot of things about the HU changes which are probably suited to a longer post if I ever feel the urge, or if you guys want it. But basically my feelings are very similar to those shared by the HU community. I did a really quick approximation and the rake changes will be costing me somewhere around 60-70k per year, which is pretty ****ed up. Regarding other sites, I’m not too willing to give away info about other sites either, sorry big fella!

Oh nice one, lucky bloke living there! I spent some time there with my brother over the festive season, absolute ripsnorter of a place down there. Never been to Canarvon though. I’m from Kalgoorlie, about 600km East of Perth for those foreigners in here.

Not sure about this. I think investing time into learning a new format could be a good option, but not the best one. I’m leaning towards spending time focusing on other industries. But I do have a strong, strong love for this game and I could see myself doing a full backflip on that current stance if things were to improve for poker. Though, at this point, how ****ing good would it be to thrive in an industry that is also thriving? Bad news every month isn’t fun for me!

Cheers big horse! Nah, not at all. I actually fly over to Melbourne every year to ‘play’ the Aussie Millions. I end up just embracing the city and watching the Australian Open tennis every single time. I was over there a week ago to watch King Kendrick and found myself playing a bit of 5/5 in the crown. Dropped my thousand bucks pretty swiftly then left. Was more fun than I thought it would be - some decent characters down there it would seem!

Thanks mate, I’m not pursuing sports betting seriously at the moment but I’ve always had half on eye on it for the last 5 years or so. It’s more just a thing I do for fun, but I think I have a pretty good natural feel for it. I’m up lifetime, but an insignificant amount. I’m probably just a fish on a heater anyway, too hard to know at this point. Although I have been barred from 4 or 5 agencies now, the way they operate is pathetic in that sense.

Say I knew my potential earnings were even 60% of my poker potential earnings, I'd happily invest a bunch of time into it for my love of sports and to get into a healthy industry. I’ll keep you guys posted though for sure. I'm actually doing my first ever programming right now, which is good timing because it would come in very handy for sports bet modelling. But the type I'm doing is not applicable, nor is it fun at all haha.

Good to get this going, exciting times. Will answer more stuff if there's any more questions for my next few posts. After that I'll probably start talking about results, maybe the occasional HH, and anything else that the thread throws up or I feel like writing about!

I'm just seeing this now, thanks a lot for the response.

One more question for ya haha. When you transitioned to HU, did you start off playing HUSNG's or did you jump straight into the HU cash games? Reason I'm asking is cause I've always wanted to get into HU cash games too but since the smallest stake is out of my BR (currently beating 10NL & moving up to 25NL soon hopefully) I gotta wait till I move up enough to play them

all the best again

Is this at the crown in Perth or Melbourne? If Perth, I didn't even know there was a 25/25 there. Thought the max was 5/5. If it's in Perth I'm a good chance of floating down there for an appearance. Any more info would be appreciated!

Yeah I did. I was trialing out all the Pr1nnyraiding stuff on the lowest limit HUSNG's and it made for decent practice. Always pay the cheapest lessons possible when learning and moving up would be my advice.

Hey fellas, sorry for the abandonment of the thread (congrats to those who called it earlier). I've been travelling and playing heaps of Australian fantasy sports and studying cryptocurrencies, which has taken up a lot of my week. I played my last ever hand of poker yesterday decided I had to withdraw with the incoming ban for Australians on the horizon. Gee our government are a bunch of spastics.

First/last update of the thread:

I have played so little poker this year, but it went okay I guess

I actually haven't even checked, as my databases are on diff computers now, but I'm pretty sure I would've fallen just short of the milly. Probably somewhere around 980k, but maybe a big dirty milly in EV. EV was nice to me over my career; I ran over EV so often at the start which helped me with a quick rise through the limits after black friday. But then the old ***** came back with force and got the better of a floppy nut at the end of his career - but this makes me happy somehow.

Few final thoughts on leaving the game that gave me so much:

I'll always love poker, as it's everything I enjoy, meshed into one game. Maths, psychology, strategy games, sports, banter, the freedom, the social side of it. In a sick way, nothing made me happier than when a railbird or opponent gave me one of the classic "I hope you get cancer", or "I hope your mother dies a slow painful death" kinda rants. I loved the wild emotions involved. Though all good things must come to an end - the current landscape of powerful software, business decisions from sites that continually cut professionals' profits, and just the HU ZOOM format tbh, are plenty of incentive to stay in my nice home and pursue other dreams rather than move abroad and continue playing poker.

I always dreaded the day of leaving the game. But now that it's come around, I'm genuinely excited for it, and haven't really felt this excited about the future since I was climbing through the ranks. If anyone is dreading this day too, you shouldn't. Trust the flopster - when the day does come, you'll feel completely differently about it then you do now, and you'll enjoy it.

Though I did dread the day, there was always something inside me that was unsatisfied playing poker. It felt like I was just playing my favourite game all day every day, but offering nothing to society. This ate away at me a fair bit, especially towards the end of my career. Hence, in my new endeavours (in particular fantasy sports), I'm gonna try to be a bit more of a business oriented type, while still running the streets obviously hehe. A Floppy Galfond if you will. At the start, I was coaching and growing with people around me. But when this stopped, the enjoyment did too. There's something a lot more rewarding about helping people grow or growing with people around you.

So if any of you bastards are into cryptocurrencies, hit me up. I'm getting into it pretty seriously now. Some exciting **** going on there. Also, if you're Australian and into AFL, I'm making some good money on draftstars and love talking about it.

Not sure if there'll be many people back in here as it's been so long between updates, but if you have any questions, I'll answer literally anything as honestly as I can. Happy to answer any general questions also. And if there's any old foes still around, I'll tell you if I thought you were ****house or good.

Cheers fellas, loved the ride.
