Over the last two years, I've mostly played poker on weekends. My approach was to deposit some money, and if I won, I would withdraw all of it. Despite some modest success (barely), there were times when I played on higher stakes that I wasn't ready for, and I ended up losing my money.

To enhance my poker skills, I've been actively watching various poker streams to learn from experienced players. Some of the channels I follow include Jamie Staples, Matthew Staples, Beriuzy, Bencb, Egption, and Apestyles. Since I can't afford paid coaching, I rely on free content. Additionally, I've been reading books on poker strategy, and currently, I'm going through Michael Acevedo's "Modern Poker Theory."

However, I've come to realize that my previous approach may not be the most profitable way to play poker. Therefore, I've decided to start a bankroll with $150 on Partypoker and focus on playing micro tournaments with buy-ins of about $1 to $2. Initially, things went well, and my bankroll grew to $214, but lately, I've experienced a downturn, and my bankroll has decreased to $139.

I'm seeking advice on how I can improve my poker game. Am I playing in tournaments that are too expensive for my current bankroll?

Hello Sneaky,

It's great to see that you've been actively working on improving your poker skills and are determined to approach the game in a more profitable way.

Watching poker streams and following experienced players is an excellent way to learn and understand various strategies. While paid coaching is beneficial, there's still a wealth of knowledge available through free content, especially from top players and coaches like the ones you've mentioned.

Reading books on poker strategy is also a valuable resource, and "Modern Poker Theory" by Michael Acevedo is a reputable choice. Continue studying and applying the concepts you learn from both streams and books to your gameplay.

Regarding your recent downturn in the bankroll, it's essential to manage your bankroll carefully. While a few downswings are normal in poker due to variance, it's crucial not to play beyond the limits your bankroll can handle. The general guideline is to have at least 100-200 buy-ins for the stake you're playing. With your current bankroll at $139, it might be wise to drop down to even lower buy-ins temporarily until your bankroll stabilizes.

Consider practicing good bankroll management and applying strict stop-loss rules to avoid significant losses during downswings. Additionally, regularly reviewing your hands and analyzing your gameplay for leaks can help you identify areas where you can improve.

Incorporate a mix of studying, playing, and reviewing your sessions to ensure steady progress in your poker journey. As you gain more experience and confidence, you can gradually move up in stakes when your bankroll allows it.

Remember, poker is a long-term game, and success is measured over an extended period. Stay patient, stay disciplined, and continue striving for improvement. If you have any specific hands or situations you'd like advice on, don't hesitate to share them on the forum, and the community will be happy to help.

Wishing you the best of luck on your poker endeavors!
