This will be a thread of my journey as I start my poker grind playing live 1/2 NL.
My starting bankroll was $150, this is my normal buyin for live 1/2 at my local casino (Maryland Live). This is largely because i am a full time electrical engineering student, and also work part time. I started this journey last thursday
1/30/14. I played at live when it first upon and grinded for about a month and a half when the poker room first opened. I did pretty well for someone who had only been playing poker for a few months. I was able to pay for some of my school bills with my winnings and other expenses. Unfortunately I couldn't keep playing consistantly and had to stop for a while. I am now ready to grind my way up to through live 1/2.

This thread will be a way for me to share my experiences with other poker players and hopefully get some help from more experienced players. I will try to do some hand reviews from time to time, and hopefully some of you out there can give me feed back on my play.

Good luck. This thread will be moved to Poker Goals and Challenges.

You are doomed to failure with such a small bankroll. You must run like God just to play a second day. And then a third.

Are you going to limit your losses to one $150 buyin per night? Your risk of ruin with your limited roll is probably 99.99999999999999999 percent. Best of luck to you, though. I'm going to subscribe and hope and pray that if I ever make a trip to MDL, I see you playing $2/$5 or higher.

Read as much as you can in here. Read GG's thread. Post as many hand histories as you can. Respond to as many hand histories as you can.

Subscribe to some PG&C threads and read them regularly.

Good luck.

Trying to figure out if this is for real. Did you really run good from 150 dollars? Or did you supplement your BR with other income too?

Yea lucky for me I ran really good my first two session making about $540 the first session and $600 something the second. From there I did lose occasionally but for the most part been a pretty consistent winner. I think I could contribute a lot of that to the horrible 1/2 players at MDL and a bit of luck for sure

So tonight I played a 1/2 nl session at MDL.

Hero($165) middle position w/ KK
Villian($750+) direct right

Pre flop:
Straddled pot $5
Action goes limp, limp, hero raises to $20. 4 players call the $20.

Flop ($100) [2 3 4] rainbow
Action goes check, check, check, hero bets $65, everyone folds except villain who just calls.

Turn ($230) [2 3 4 5]
Villain checks and hero shoves for $80. Villain snap calls and shows 67off, for the nut straight.

Now I realize that my shove on the river was pretty dumb because he only calls with the straight. But my question is should I have shoved on the flop or was there anything else I could have done differently? I think it was kind of a spewy call on villains part but actually he was getting close to the correct odds if he assumes I'm never folding.

Comment away.

I think the correct reasoning for checking turn folding river is not that "he only calls with a straight" but what hands in his range would he have gotten to the turn with that you still beat? Pretty sure the number of hands you still beat is close to zero.

I do like the flop sizing here quite a bit, a bit bigger can sometimes be good, just depending on if you think you can get fat value out of your opponents. It would be bad to bet bigger if you think your bet would look too committing to villains since anything more looks completely like you are going with your hand. You just need to drop any thought that you "deserve" to win the pot, even when the nut worst card for you peels the turn (I think that contributed to your bad turn shove).

Thanks parellelflux I think thats a great analysis for the hand. I think it was almost like a tilting action for me to shove the turn when I realize that I can't really get called by worse. Thanks for your feedback. I will posting additional hands pretty soon and would love to hear your feed back
