I thought I would make a thread as somewhere to post hands and keep myself accountable, and see my progress. I would like to go from 2nlz to 10nlz by the end of 2019.
I am a longtime losing player looking to try and finally take poker a little more seriously.
I previously played while a student when I had a lot of time which I found was a negative - its very easy to not only develop bad habits when starting but hammer those bad habits in if no studying is applied.
How to get there?
This time around, I would like to put a bigger emphasis on fundamentals and building a stronger theoretical knowledge-base. My plans are to:
-Go through The Grinders Manual very slowly, playing between chapters to internalise
-Watch some introductory RIO videos (recommendations for a bad reg please...!)
-Sleep more - vital key to absorbing what has been learnt and, much like learning a language, move things from short term memory which need active thinking into 'intuition'
-Mental Game - something I am much better at now (perhaps now I am working, the money, especially at these stakes means much less to me)
-Play less, play slower - something really really important for the learning process - similar to chess in a lot of ways. Playing 1 minute games will do nothing. I was losing last time I picked up poker playing 4 tables of zoom. I am now playing 2 - I could play 1 but really really think about all spots on a case by case basis. I think when I begin taking shots at 5nl I will play one table.
If anyone else has any other advice to help a newbie out let me know!
I will predominantly be playing on Stars although will mix in 888 and perhaps Party.
Gl man make sure to post interesting hands. Even if it’s medium size pots where you are unsure about as they will be much more common spots opposed to playing for stacks.
unsure about the fold here but the flush came in and felt a lot like either that or 89. half pot turn with a 7/10 river seems like value and not really too sure what he could be doing this with that i beat? unsure anyway...
K6s: Fold flop, I would be surprised if he has random bluff combos to justify calling with second pair on this board.
QQ: My initial reaction was to say 4b but given the note yeah calling makes sense even with the dead money in the pot I suppose. Well played otherwise, raising flop would have been terrible.
Played a little over the weekend. I think my biggest leak right now is calling down too lightly - think I can go into autoclick mode and not actually consider the actions villain is taking with on board textures. A good thing is that I can sense when tilting and know to take a break.
Stars - not so good - definitely avoidable losses:
888 - started playing the 5nl normal tables. I think to say I was running hot would be an understatement:
River:(101 BB, 2 players) 2 SB bets 130 BB and is all-in, Hero calls 130 BB
Spoiler:
SB shows A A (Two Pair, Aces and Sixes)
(Pre 81%, Flop 92%, Turn 95%) Hero shows Q Q (Two Pair, Queens and Sixes)
(Pre 19%, Flop 8%, Turn 5%) SB wins 348.5 BB
I think this was played fine pre/flop/turn (pre, I could have 4 bet, but I think against that sizing in position - call is fine). The river, however, I think I could have gotten away from this and nearly did - villain had a WWSF of 52 which convinced me to call. Given his stats though (fairly tight) I think I could have gotten away from this - stinks of AA KK, though I thought JJ could equally be playing like this. This hand kind of tilted me and stopped shortly after this.
QQ: River is a tough spot seems kinda nitty but not gonna let it go when your hand is misrepped and SBvBTN.
AK: at these stakes yah its a cooler, wouldn't mind a check OTT though
Not the best weekend but I think I was playing well - stopping before getting tilted and really trying to think through hands where possible. Trying to play in more exploitatively than previously as opposed to auto clicking
I was having real trouble with this hand. Villain is playing 18/14/4 over 71 hands at 2nlz where 3 betting ranges are generally very value heavy (although less so from blinds). VS UTG range I would expect this to be QQ+ AK maybe some AQs KQs this kind of thing.
I elect to flat because I am in position and against a fairly tight 3 betting range (granted very small sample).
I think the flop is a fine call and pretty standard - 3 betting doesn't make too much sense as I am only getting called by worse (maybe JJ TT carry on here if he is 3 betting that loose oop.
Snap jam on the turn and the fact its a J means I am behind JJ now (granted only 3 combos now), AK still 16 combos and 6 combos of each of AA KK. Sets are v unlikely on this board but i'm not sure if villain would even take this line with AK (possibly with clubs/diamonds). What do people think?
