October 2015 Part 2 Goals and Results – October 20-24
Poker Goals
[25/50] Play 50 Hours of Poker
I played a little over 25 hours, as I was pulled in another direction by non-poker stuff, but that should free up more of my time in November to crush some hours, so it'll work out. I'm going to close the year out super strong here, and I'm going to close the month out solidly. I've got over 41 hours in this month, and the new goal is to get at least 100 in total.
Fortunately, I'm running at about twice my expected hourly this month and might actually hit the unofficial dollar goal I had in my head even with about half the hours. I've got a shot, at least, which is fortunate given my poor volume.
Health Goals
[3/3] Go to the Gym Three Times
I'm still crushing it in the gym. Before September, I had never deadlifted or squatted seriously - I'd say under 5 times total in my life. Not only am I regularly doing those lifts, I've now hit some respectable one rep maxes for my height and the amount of time I've been on the Stronglifts 5x5 program, which I'm still loving. I feel healthier and my posture has improved a bit. All good things!
Pick Two Hands - "Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?"
Alright, a few of you are asking for hands, so I'll relent and give a couple... I'll post whichever two hands get the most votes by the time I get home from tomorrow's session (i.e. about 20-30 hours from now). They're listed in chronological order and all occurred this week. You may vote for two hands. You get two for the price of one with option #2, but they're all either good stories or interesting hands.
1. Flopping bottom set in a huge three-way, heavy action $4K 2/5 pot. But, is it good?
2. Tangling with a maniac whale out of position and making hero plays in two hands.
3. We river an 8 high flush and face a bet on a non-paired board in a tough spot (raise vs. call).
4. We flop the nuts against a super aggro LAG bordering on maniac and get angled, but who will prevail?
5. Executing a 3 barrel, zero equity bluff with a lady friend onlooking.
Come on Cuse. All of them sound great, but 2 and 4 sound like the best stories. Do 2 and 4 and then do short stories for 1/3/5. Honestly I almost voted for #5.
Honestly, I like your writing style. It's why I read this thread. I've given up playing poker as a serious thing years ago, I realized long ago I'm hopeless. So I like to live vicariously through you.

I just can't give away all the hand histories! The stories aren't very good without the hand details...
Thanks for the props on the writing. When I move on to a new thread I'll be posting a lot more hands.
I count four votes for #2, four votes for #4 and one vote for #5... So 2 and 4 it is... I'll type them up tomorrow. I'm surprised there was no love for the 4K pot (#1) lol.... #3 was the least sexy, for sure, so no surprise there.
Pick Two Hands - First Winner - 4. We flop the nuts against a super aggro LAG bordering on maniac and get angled, but who will prevail?
I'll split these into two posts. We'll start with Hand #4.
There's some history in this hand, since I heroed off the villain pretty significantly about 20 minutes prior. I bet/called the river in a spot where I was going for thin value and then decided to hero a nearly 80% pot raise and was good.
It's a limped pot and I limp the SB with A3
Flop ($20): K62
We can work with that... A good way to be a professional crusher of poker is to flop the nuts a lot. A better way is to turn/river the nuts a lot, but we gotta take what we can get, right?
It checks to the maniac and he bets $20. I raise to $60 and he calls.
Turn ($140): T
He checks out of turn, trying to angle me. Usually this means strength... They're trying to induce you to bet with your weaker hands so that they can pounce, when they really have no intention of checking back. It also causes people with strong hands to overreact, trying to avoid the next card being dealt, by saying something like "WHOA WHOA!"
I remain calm, so as not to give anything away, and play dumb, "Uhh, don't I act first?"
I bet $100.
He raises to $500, leaving about $150 behind. I jam, he shrugs and snaps and I hold against KT.
Do you really consider that an "angle" though? I don't mind stuff like that, I think it's just silly and play accordingly.
Let me know next time you're in Philly, we should go out for a beer.
Intentionally acting out of turn to influence or block an opponents action is definitely an angle shoot IMO. There are varying degrees of it, such as bluff-shoving out of turn so that your opponent can't bluff first, which is even worse.
It'll probably be mid-November before I'm in Philly again, but I'll do my best to remember to let you know... I'd definitely be down to grab a beer.

Is there ever a wrong spot to Omar? He came at the king with an angle shot and missed. Actually, the hand he tried to bluff me would be a better one to use it on, but I can't share that one.
