Do you ever take an action at the poker table and you say to yourself, "the wrong thing to do is X" and then that's exactly what you do? I knew it was wrong and afterwards, writing this up it's so obvious I should 3B the turn.
I just called, hoping for the board not to pair or club. It didn't. It was a low red card and he bet out $250 leaving him with ~$400 behind. I shoved and he said, "I've got to call, I've got the second best hand," tossing a chip into the pot.

I said, "I've got it," and his cards were in the muck before I could even turn mine up. So I didn't see his cards but his claim of 7J is way fishier than I would normally range him (note to file), but maybe bc he closed the action he felt justified. He went on a rant that I ALWAYS have the nuts and didn't mention a club draw.

It's clear now that if I had 3B him he would have shoved the turn. I was so stupid and got lucky that it didn't hurt me this time.
Certainly versus an unknown V your play was not correct but assuming we can trust your description it likely was optimal this time. Despite you stacking him dozens of times he will pay you off. You know he isn't betting a naked draw. You know if the board pairs and he bets you can fold. If his sets will pay you off on most misses you are better being paid after he has no equity than when he still has draw and your extra money is also at risk. Again only because he is sticky, never is betting a draw so will pay you off later, and never bluffing so you can easily fold if he gets lucky but won't fold when he doesn't.

You guys are having this conversation about QJo, I just wanted to interject that I have QJo as an open/fold mix in the HJ. Essentially, one of the worst offsuit broadways I open. I use janky dated ranges from Upswing, so, it could be wrong. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it in a vacuum.

I am not sure about how the weakfish in the CO/BTN should affect our opening range in the HJ. Kind of an interesting question. Could see it going either way depending on how much of a postflop edge we have on them. If they’re very wide and play fairly passively (ie they will let us realize our equity from OOP), and if they’ll pay off a few bets with worse top pairs, I could see it being a profitable open with QJo.

Agree with all this. IMO it's one of those +/-0.05bb type hands in a vaccuum so it almost doesn't matter whether we open or not unless we're either on a difficult table or just destroying the opposition.

As a blanket statement that seems ... mediocre.

At 200bb it gets open folded by robots a lot (ACGS, for 2.5x), but not always. At 100bb robots open it 50% of the time for 2x. Feel like it won't be too bad to open even all the time, although mixing fold would be better. It's not like it's 98o. Given description of CO, BTN, BB ... I'm def. opening it.

On turn I don't mind call, but for very different reasons. The main one being that given the description of V we are never shoving TT or even 7c6c here, so shoving only QJ with position feels bad. And to repeat we have position and can put more money in on rivers.

Maybe barbarian play nets more money anyway, but feels like we are training ourselves to be worse against better players.
