I think the fact that there's little too no financial literacy education in the US is a huge problem.
I like that feel wrath's kid is being forced to pick a realistic salary for a job and figure out the disposable income and budget that leads to and ability to buy a home. If more kids did that earlier they would go probably go for real college majors. I can't tell you all the number of people I know that studied the humanities or the arts telling themselves "I don't care about money" then complain at age 30 about all the things they can't do.
Not that one has to buy a home. It's not worth it in many cases.
I went to a top private school too and they wouldn’t have dreamed about teaching a subject like commerce on any kind of life skills. I did Economics my final two years there and even that was frowned upon a little.
8 years of Latin though! (Shouldn’t laugh as I actually think Latin has been one of the more useful subjects I did)
I disagree with you about the Humanities degrees...maybe because I did one and I think it helped me a lot. (Philosophy Politics and Economics). I think they encourage/force you to develop original thought, evaluate nuance and to learn how to structure an argument, which are all key determinants of success in business and corporate.
I do understand that they can be seen as not helpful for many professions where more directional and technical skills are needed for graduate entry jobs. Also that they’re getting less popular as increasing college fees put more pressure on a degree that seems to payback immediately by being seen to help/guarantee employment prospects.
Law would probably be an example of a vocational/directional degree that also taught you most of the same skills as an arts/humanities degree and I would probably choose that if I was going through the process again
