On trolling, **** posting and brotherly histrionics alone I'm not sure Oasis has an equal. (And first two albums were pretty great)
I'd say one hit wonder refers to the band, not to the song.

Having been to Big Lake in Texas on multiple occasions, I can confirm that there is no water there.

Think that was the point; i.e. can't label Oasis a one-hit-wonderwall due to them having multiples hits.

I can jokingly dance to that Kid Rock / Sweet Home Alabama song but I cannot jokingly dance to that Vanilla Ice / Queen song.

Wife had a distant cousin that was employee #5 or 6 at Research In Motion which was the original legal name for the Blackberry. All this news today had me thinking about that although nothing necessarily has changed.

At one point he was worth WELL into 9 figures and was part of a group trying to buy the Maple Leafs in the early 2000s. Hopefully he diversified a bit.

I raise.

My uncle was (at the time) the youngest partner at Goldman Sachs. Kinda obscene what retired full partners receive yearly.

So last night we're nursing a 2 goal lead late in the third period of our bottom-of-the-barrel 3-on-3 beer hockey league.

The other team's super star (wearing a classic Pavel Bure jersey) roofs one on me to make it a one goal game. I approach the scorekeeper to confirm how many goals Bure has and he says "Three, he's maxed out and can't score any more", and I inform our bench to play accordingly.

So the next shift we lay off him and key on the other players instead. We leave him completely unchecked and allow him to skate in on me, where I also completely ignore him and instead key on the other shooters. And yet he shoots anyways and puts one off my toe. Um, ok, not exactly sure what his plan is here, perhaps attempting to create a rebound? We all completely ignore him again and I feel another one of his shots go off my arm. When he does this a third time and bounces one obliviously off my blocker, I start to become a little suspicious.

So on the next whistle, I ask the scorekeeper again "Bure's maxed out, right?". Scorekeeper checks his pad and then says, "oh my bad, nope, he's only got two; he can still score".

Is that Pavel Bure Canada or Pavel Bure Texas? I know my ice hockey and my roller hockey but I'm not familiar with beer hockey teams.

Ok I'll do a few of my 2021 favorites. I don't think any will be on the iPod.

First up is Nation of Language. Throwback Joy Division/New Order sound. Garlick may even like them. Seeing them live in April

Yup, never heard of them but certainly hear the Joy Division / New Order vibe (although honestly only the one obvious song appears on the iPod to date).

I don't know OS age but I would guess that for people of a certain age a few Oasis songs certainly fit that definition. Ofc need to define what "best in history" means...50? 100? 500? etc

i'm getting flock of seagulls vibes as well

don't get me wrong, i like it new order/joy division and i like that song you posted, but i also like flock of seagulls - but let's be honest, if you compared a band to flock of seagulls instead it would just immediately discarded as a crap band

just add a duh nuh nuh nuh with a guitar riff in head at any point and it's right there

Had not heard of before. Definitely dig it. Sadly, their tour is coming nowhere near here. If I was still in Indy, I'd definitely check them out at the cavernous "Hi Fi."

Only new stuff I found last year:

Clearly, my pony is slow.

Part of it is that Oasis wasn't as big in America as elsewhere and part of it was that I used the word rock to describe their music. If you want to be narrow about it, Oasis' music is mid-90s britpop which is probably -if not my favorite- among my top 3 favorite musical genres. If you want to be less narrow, it's pop rock. Even less narrow, rock.

Moreover:
Quote:
In total, Oasis has moved 58,7 million equivalent album sales. This puts them at the bottom of the Top 50 all-time biggest bands. People who flagged them as the new Beatles may see this number as lower than expected. If we ignore the unrealistic comparisons, making the all-time Top 50 of your category is an amazing achievement. It must be said that the UK alone represents an insane 21,7 million units of their sales. This makes them one of the very top selling acts ever there and explains the distinct perception of their success one may have depending on where they live.

This is from 2017:
Quote:
Oasis‘ 1997 situation is fairly close to what Taylor Swift is facing today. Both artists were / are ridiculously popular in their own country and both had their global sales questioned in spite of great sales (only because of the misguided comparison with their local sales).
Quote:
Were they mostly a local band then? Certainly not. While the band was undoubtedly much more consistent throughout their career in the UK than in the US, they remained a force up to their disbanding in several markets like Japan, Brazil and Italy.

It’s hard to exaggerate how big Oasis were in the mid 90s in the UK ..as well as the other big UK bands at the time like Pulp and Blur and to a lesser extent Verve, Suede, Supergrass. I’m not sure that the term Britpop accurately describes the music but it was very definitely a moment in time in the country
