It always hurts but it hurts way less when it’s recreational / side gig.

I had a recent week where I lost a sizable sum of $. It wasn’t as much as sabr but it sucked. Thanks fully the next week, I got almost all of it back in one session.

I think it would have been way harder to swallow if I was still playing for a living (been a long time).

I find sustained negative variance truly crushing in my business.

Even in a year when I’m tracking quite a way into profit, I’m at the point right now where I don’t believe a deal will ever go through again. Every time a phone call comes in I’m expecting the worst. It can be quite debilitating, no matter how many times I’ve seen it before and how positive a mindset I have. Yesterday I walked round in a daze for about 4 hours

Our business is super strong but we can’t keep the restaurants open all of our hours because we don’t have enough staff…..

I would hire 35 people today if they would only show up. (GM for one location arranged 9 interviews on Tuesday, 3 showed up-one got hired and then no-showed her first shift today)

Staffing for beginning jobs is beyond difficult right now. Woke up with a headache so bad last night I went straight to the bathroom and threw up

Existing staff is so stressed out we are afraid of a total meltdown

So….we decided it’s a great time to double down and sign new development deals on our own concepts….will have 2 new casual bar/restaurants under construction by January

I’m not the brightest bulb on the porch

thanks man.

It always does to some extent and losing 80:20s happen all the time in business as well as in poker. I don't mean to whine about it because I'm a lot better off than most, but I think the overall point is that old cliche that you lose most of your joy from the wins because you expect them, but the losses hurt more than ever.

I completely agree. We get jaded by the good times / good feelings and you start to trick yourself into thinking that’s what it’s supposed to be like all of the time so when you hit a low it sucks more and when you’re back up high, you believe it’s normal. Who gets pumped about normalcy?!

What are the usual situations?

Companies reneging on offers? Candidates flaking or staying put?

wise words friend

for me personally what’s most frustrating re downswinging is losing a few 1000bb+ pots (say 4k+ at 2/4) in a single session or several in a week etc as the EV is sooooo hard to realize that deep. usually it will be in brutal fashion too given all the chips wouldn’t find their way in the middle otherwise

It makes the regrind far more daunting than losing the same amount of buyins on a smaller stakes grind

comes with the territory of playing really deep though esp when other pros cover

don’t want to derail so won’t share unless people are interested but I had a conversation with a very well respected/renowned high stakes pro and he drilled into me how important it is to play ultra ultra deep (1000bb+E preferably) as much as possible even when tired/tilted/downswinging to crush high stakes live in the future.

Lots of cool nuggets in there about the downswings that are a function of that and how to ride the waves effectively etc

Well…this morning someone I placed on a $200k role and who is supposed to start on Monday showed up in a mental institution after a breakdown. So that’s 15% I won’t be getting

More standard situations are getting to the end of a long process and either a candidate accepts, signs and then gets persuaded to stay or all of a sudden disappears and tells you they’re taking another role you didn’t know they were looking at. I’ve had two of those this week with 200k + roles. Two of these three jobs have taken me 100+ hours already.

If you’re lucky you have another candidate who you can quickly finish the process with, but often you either have to start again, or the clients have another candidate in their pocket who they’ll offer the role to and you end up with nothing but a headache and a sore ass

Yes FG
Staffing issues are pretty universal right now in the biz

he may be correct and his advice might be well intentioned, but do always remember that the best poker players are often playing poker even when they're not at the poker table

That first example has to be like hitting a lotto ticket. That’s crazy (no pun intended).

Thanks-same to you man-

We will get through this challenge just like all of the others-restaurants are hard

We are actually very pumped about the new projects, but that is because we are masochists and need more pain

I have quite the list of last minute incidents that have gotten in the way of making big placements. this one is in the top 10 but not the top 3. (and not in this case minimising what's happened to this woman, who I really hope gets better soon obv).

I'm not sure anything will top the ruined Managing Director placement from a a decade ago with a guy who'd gone through 6 interviews, psych tests and referencing. He just needed to have a 10 min rubber stamp introduction with the CEO of the listed company. The meeting lasted less than 10 seconds. The (soon to be) MD walked into the CEO's office caught his eye and realised that the CEO was the husband of the married woman he'd been having sex with.

I'll go all DMW on you.

Adrian Peterson came back from an early Pro Bowl all buoyed by the praise he'd had from the top defensive players he'd hung out with there and came back to training camp the next season at 240lbs instead of his usual 215.

Turns out Ray Lewis had got them all together and they'd agreed the best way to slow him down was to encourage him to gain weight. But they did it by going 'oh man, you're tough to bring down at 215, just imagine what a killer you'd be at 240, you'd run for 2500 yards!'.

young wide eyed AD didn't realise he was being played.
