Some of them just don't like school or can't keep up academically because they wouldn't get in if they weren't athletes, but in a lot of cases they want to do better, they just don't have time with games and mandatory meetings/workouts often conflicting with classes. Guess which one they have to go to if there's a conflict? The "free education" everyone always spouts about that these kids are getting is utterly useless because the system sets them up to fail academically.
My first college experience was University of Oklahoma. Had speech as a requirement and our first assignment was a speech about our background and hopes etc. This one huge guy stood up and said "my name is joe bob brown and I play a little football here" and sat down. Don't remember him back in class after that but my guess is he got a gentleman's C in the course since he was still on the team

It was fairly well known that a lot of the OU athletes had "shadow jobs" for school boosters where they got paid for no real work. But as Cush pointed out the free "education" (and the underground cash benefits) were not really worth that much to them in the long run.

Oh man, those slaves had it real tough by the sounds of it. They were too busy banging co-eds to contribute any work to your group projects. I feel real bad for them. I wonder what actual slaves would think about you referring to college football players as slaves. It's sort of like referring to someone you disagree with as a racist, or a world leader you don't like as Hitler. These words: slave, racist, Hitler now lack the strong meaning their historical context once bestowed upon them.

It’s common knowledge that it’s not uncommon for cars and/or other benefits to be given too. In basketball too. Specifically to the biggest recruits.

There is definitely an issue with balancing academics and athletics which should be worked on. It's a big stretch to infer many football players want to major in electrical engineering but coach won't allow them to miss practice. Education will always be what you make of it.

We had a little joke you could tell a quiz was coming when all the football players showed up at class. I remember quickly explaining the difference between evaporation and sublimation to a frosh linebacker.

i had a summer research internship with my structural engineering professor that i worked with a LB on PSUs team. he wasn't a starting LB or anything but he was on some of the special teams, iirc. he was the only football player i remember having any interaction with in engineering.

when i got my econ degree, i know i had several players in my classes. many of whom did not show up often. going through that degree, with all the random classes i could take that weren't econ specific to fill out the course load, like "rocks for jocks" is probably why i ran into more players. engineering was pretty specific coursework, even though you had options, they were mostly other engineering disciplines, like thermo or envi engineering. i got to take gym classes for my econ degree. it's how i got certified in SCUBA.

Yeah, this was also at USAFA (US Air Force Academy), as part of the "Leadership and Character Development Symposium" in 2014, IIRC. Where, BTW, student athletes don't get much slack in terms of academics, though that doesn't really tell us too much about regular FBS schools.

I will say that the NCAA paid to send me along on a couple basketball road trips because two students requested tutoring in German. On the one hand, the amount spent to fly me out, put me up in the team hotel, and my per deim was kind of ridic. On the other hand the NCAA clearly expects student athletes to get educated.

Too much pasta landed three University of Oklahoma athletes on the wrong side of the NCAA rule book.

The unusual case, first reported Wednesday by the Oklahoman, came after the trio attended a graduation banquet in 2013. To restore their eligibility, the athletes each had to donate $3.83 to charity to cover the cost of the pasta. The school reported the situation to the NCAA.

Another NCAA bylaw, better known as the bagel rule, permits schools to offer bagels, fruits and nuts to athletes at any time. An interpretation, however, prohibited offering spreads such as cream cheese or peanut butter with the bagels.

Some slaves in pre-civil war era US had relatively decent lives. Lived in the same house as their masters, decent food, didn't get beaten. They were still slaves though and it doesn't mean its right.

Its all good, we clearly disagree and I'm not gonna change your mind, thats fine. However I don't think you're racist or Hitler because of it since me calling NCAA football player's slaves is not on the same level as that. I hate when people do that **** too.

True, but only a handful of the biggest recruits get anything significant. Everyone else gets peanuts if they're lucky.

Playing college sports is a choice. Slavery is not. The athletes are, at worst, indentured servants, if we must make an historical exploitative servitude metaphor.

They are slaves for what, like 4 years? I'd say it's more like they are in jail...the most awesome jail ever!

the entire compulsory college to draft to pros structure is ridiculous.

it's a dodgy and corrupt system that is basically two closed shops colluding to maintain and grow their businesses by suppressing the freedom and negotiating power of their 'workers'. These 18yr old kids who are uber talented and capable of earning a living at that age have to wait 3 year minimum before they can get paid...in some cases losing a large chunk of their prime earning potential and then they have to wait at least another 4 years but often 5 or 6 before they can choose where they work or find an efficient market for their services.

I think you can use the term slave when it's obvious to everyone it's a hyperbole to make a point.

Living in a house, eating food, and not getting beaten does not constitute a decent life. When you're a slave you can't go drink lattes at starbucks. You can't go to the big rager at the fraternity house. You can't hang out at whataburger at 3 in the morning and you certainly can't just stay at home and play PS4 with your buds.

("relatively" ie relatively decent compared to Ariel Castro's kidnapping victims).
