I'm thinking about getting a laptop so I can use it to hook up to my 47 in tv. What do I need to know about how this works from those of you who have a setup like this? Will the tv's max resolution of 1920x1080 be able to be seen, or will it just allow the TV to use the max resolution of the laptop? The TV is a new 1080p lcd, if this makes a difference. The laptop has an HDMI and svga or sga whatever output as does the tv.

The max resolution the laptop can output is dependent on its graphics card. If it has an HDMI output I'd assume that it can output at least 1280*720 and probably 1920*1080. The resolution of the laptop's screen doesn't really make a difference.

An HDMI cable is quite cheap, so you could atleast try it without having to invest much.

+1 on depends on your laptop video card. But I'm not a big fan of using the tv, because even if you get 1920x1080, you 'll basically be getting a 24" monitor's worth on a 47" tv. All the pixels are going to look gigantic, so you may have to sit really far back for it to look decent. But if you have a cable lying around, try it and see how you like it. If you play FT, use the points to get a big monitor (since you can't cash out, and they just keep accruing).
