A Question on Opening Ranges A Question on Opening Ranges

I'd like to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of opening from MP2 with medium SCs vs weak high cards. Let's simplify it with an example.

Is it better to open from MP2 with 76s or KTs?

76s

Advantages:
1. Less likely to be dominated when a 7 or 6 hits
2. Thinking opponents will have a harder time putting you on a preflop range/hand is more well-disguised.
3. Straight possibilities
4. Easier to bluff dry boards
5. Will get paid off more often when you hit board hard.

Disadvantages:
1. Rarely dominate opponents when 7 or 6 hits
2. Must bluff more often because of low chance of winning showdowns

KTs Advantages
1. Better chance to win showdowns when you don't hit/better bluff catcher
2. More likely to dominate opponents when a T hits
3. Easier to bluff boards with lots of high cards since more high cards are in your range.
4. More likely that your pair is top pair when you hit.

KTs Disadvantages
1. More likely to be dominated when a K hits.
2. Harder to bluff dry boards if low cards aren't in your range.

Which hand are you more likely to open with from MP2 and why?

Good point, Rommel.

And I agree, Oddhalo, that's kind of what I meant by "better chance to win showdowns when you don't hit/ better bluff catcher".

This isn't really debatable, imo.
It's KTss.

KTss is a lockdown hand. If you have a flush or a straight, you usually don't have to worry about turns/rivers killing your hand/action.

With 76ss, if you hit a flush, you run the risk of a 4 card flush hitting the turn or river. You also will often hit the dummy end of straights.

Same principle applies for trips. If you have 76 on a 77QK board, surely you won't like a Q or a K on the river.

With KT, it is less likely that you will have the low end of a full house.

A lot of good points, here. I thought this would be the overwhelming opinion, although I must admit I feel a lot more comfortable playing 76s.

Technically, I believe 76s is better bluff catcher than KTs.

KTs no question. Opening 76s in MP2 is probably not profitable in LLSNL, but KTs is.

I never need to look at my cards to know where I am at. I am either in a casino or in front of my computer if I play online.

My personal preference when opening a pot in LLSNL is to have a hand that can hit TP on the flop. That means KTs. However, the reality is that I rarely want to get to SD with TP with KT.

As for opening, I'd rarely open with a raise for either of them in MP. If the table is respecting my raises pf and folding a lot either pf or on the flop, I'm happy to raise either of them. But that is pretty rare.

Lol...I read te first line and totally expected the next sentence to be something cocky like "I dominated V's without even looking at my cards/I crush low stakes for 50+BB/hour"...

Armor, I'm def stealing this one!
Reminds me of this time some old dude showed up at my table with a really thick Canadian accent. Dealer says "where ya from" guy says Canada. Dealer say "what brought you here"
Guy says "my truck"
Haha
