My problem here is that although there are a lot of dumb people out there, most of them (esp those driving new mercs) do have half a brain. Whoever parked in your spot very very likely knew that it was private/reserved parking and chose to park there anyways. Now if they needed it for 15 min to run into the building or to meet someone to pick them up etc then I think there is actually no harm there. But if they had just taken your spot, then I'd be pretty angry about this.

There is of course a chance that its some neighbors friends car who knew that the spot was never used. They probably should have asked you but I think this also makes the spot taking not such a big deal.

The biggest problem I have with this (and I'm assuming most of you are at least slightly the same way) is that w/ the exception of the two alternate situations I described, I'd never ****ing park in someone's reserved spot. So it pisses me off to no end when someone does it to me. Not only is it risky for me but it's insanely rude and kind of offensive that someone would just take over my space. I do however tend to take that stuff kind of personally. I'd just leave a pretty polite note on the window and if the car wasn't gone in the late morning I'd have it towed or I'd find some creative way to box it in/double park it w/o getting in other people's way. The second solution would tend to make for friends off with the neighbors so only do it if you don't like them anyways.

In hindsight the box in thing is probably too immature for the real world but it works wonders in university residence parking.
