congrats on the post Miami.

my question is about your thought processes and any regrets post the aa kk hand. You played the next day but IIRC you took a long break from poker after your vegas trip.

- did losing that much put you off playing as high as 10/20 again?
- did it make you reappraise your relationship with poker more broadly (and particularly how it relates to money/wealth/the value of $$ away from the table etc? if so, how?
- did it then/does it still now affect your physically? (ie sick in the stomach, nervous rushes of energy etc?)

I would still play 10/20 if it ran and the lineup was good. The game hasn't gotten off in my area for 4-6 months, possibly longer.

The loss was painful and I took a 8-10 week break after but a lot was due to circumstances with a new climbing course that I had started. I had very little free time between that and work.

I don't get that sick to the stomach feeling often but I did feel awful after the session in February when I lost the 4500 pot to a duece on the river. That hand was emotionally draining since it capped a 18 hour session.

I still get nerves on occasion but not necessarily due to being in a bog hand. I show very little emotion at the table though.

What NBA teams do you like? Based on your username and join date my intial read was Mavericks because since you registered pre-Lebron the 06 finals would be the most logical reason to view them as cheaters, but that doesn't mesh with your apparent east coast background. Unless you're actually a fan of the Heat due to your grandfather's Florida connection and are proud of any potential (nonexistent imo) cheating? Having trouble putting you on a range here OP.

Ohhh I had my years mixed up, I guess September 2010 is the beginning of Lebron's first heat season rather than his last Cavs season. Was thinking about years the finals took place rather than years the season started, d'oh!

Yes but I wouldn't be considered a reg. I go one to two times a month. The rest of the time is playing in home games

I decided to 5b since I was oop and didn't want to go 3way. Flop was qxx, I bet but a tad too small. Turn bet again on a blank, river was a king and I check called which was bad. If I.had sized flop bet bigger I could have shoved turn with pot size bet or just over pot

Tear

I am over it now and was happy they didn't win his first year. Great player and I would be ecstatic of he returned to the Cavs, but I don't see that happening.

I have my sights set on Paul George as a consolation prize in 2014

I'm in love with to the potential "back to the Cavs" storyline because of the legacy implications. Lebron's best bet to be widely considered the GOAT, something I personally wouldn't mind seeing, is winning a couple more with the Heat and then going back to Cleveland and "re-saving" the franchise by winning another in his first season back (which probably wouldn't be hard considering Kyrie will be in his prime at that point). Then it'll look like he's just a lock to win titles wherever he goes.

btw I noticed the strat threads you posted were from the FR forums. When you were a 17/15 online grinder is that FR or 6m? If the former can you give me some context as to what a 17/15 FR player is like? As you probably know at 6m that's on the tight side for regs but still very reasonable (I was like 20/17 for most of my online poker career and transitioned to more like 23/20 as I improved) but I have no idea what FR stats look like.

I do think LeBron rejoining the Cavs in 2014 would be an instant championship with a core of Kyrie, Dion, LeBron, Thompson, 2013 draft (center or wing), Varejao, Zeller plus a few fillers, but I honestly dont believe he would return. I don't see him staying with the Heat, but he will sign on another team and bring a few championships whereever he goes.

I was playing full ring-I wasn't a crusher online so my input wouldn't be super helpful. I didn't grasp enough until about 15 months ago. Playing the style I was playing my decisions were mostly automatic, which was a bad thing. As I mentioned, I would have done far better playing fewer tables and focusing on each decision more.

There were a few occasions when I played fewer tables and expanded closer to a 23/17 playing style, but it was such a small sample size that it may not have been accurate in the long run. Going back I missed tons of good 3b spots and wasn't balanced enough. Full ring online is really boring, I should have focused more on 6 max or hu. If/when online comes back to the US (legally), I will play more of those two. I find the spots way more interesting and the games more profitable (from a potential standpoint).

Playing the style I played, most pots were raised, I didn't call a lot. It was what would be defined as a typical TAG. I have a 3b of 4-5%. My double barrel frequency was a bit too low. I was capable of floats, but I played pretty straight-forward, which caused me to miss out on a ton of good spots. It wasn't 17/15 which was bad, but the fact that I was on auto pilot.

Okay I agree it would be a good team but by including Waiters in the "core" you're lowering the bar quite a bit there lol. I don't think he's terrible or anything but I think he projects as more of a role player (making his shot selection and turnover issues even more troubling than if he projected as a high usage rate guy imo). I'm not sure of your cap situation but if you were really able to pick up option on Varejao's contract for 13-14 while still having room to max out Lebron you'd be pretty much a lock to win the east and definitely be the favorite for the title. And while I agree that Bron's return to Cleveland isn't particularly likely (I'm actually much less confident he'll take the ETA on his contract than everyone else seems to be; it's not like waiting that extra year would hurt his ability to get a max deal) but I think it's more possible than you give it credit for. Lebron seems to oscillate between wanting to be loved and not giving a **** that he's hated, and if he happened to be feeling strongly about the former... who knows.

23/17 at FR seems like it'd be super aggressive but like I said I have no context with FR numbers. As a 6m guy I do remember playing the occasional FR sesh as a change of pace and just folding everything upfront and if the pot got to me unopened in any of the 6m positions playing wayyy looser than I would in 6m (it would have probably translated to like 30/25 from those positions or something) while laughing to myself about how I was about to "crush some nits" (one downside of live is not being able to constantly talk to yourself at the table imo). It was always very fun and successful over a lolsmall sample size; I feel like if I had really focused on FR I could have made as much money from it as 6m just because the players were worse and couldn't adjust to aggression. If I had to sit there and play 12/10 or whatever the **** a standard FR TAG is I'd probably kill myself though.

Dion can be very good in the 6th man type role. I think he is already a good passer and very good ball handler. He will eventually be the leader of the second unit if we can find another scoring option in free agency or through the draft (a prototypical wing or 2 guard) The kid can attack the rim and is learning how to finish with contact. He has that attitude about him that Kyrie doesn't have.

I am actually very high on Waiters.

Assuming we miss out on LeBron, I would like the 2014 roster to look something like this

Irving/Livingston
FA or draft or trade/Waiters/Ellington
Paul George/ 2014 pick/Gee
Thompson/Varejao/Zeller
Noel or Alex Len/Varejao/Zeller

What do you like playing better—home games or the casino? Which is more profitable? Which is more fun?

Thanks!

Home games are way more fun and more profitable on most nights with the exception of Fri/Sat nights at the casino. There used to be one home game in my area that would get a legendary whale a few times per year. He would lose 12-30k easy at 2/5. I think the home atmosphere made this possible. The whale drove/flew in (not sure which) from out of town to come play in this game. There obviously had to be closer options if he just wanted to play poker for a night.

Looks like I missed this one originally. Sorry about that!

There is no magic formula. It's all fairly basic in my opinion.

In no particular order:

1. Position, position, position. Don't play oop vs good players if you don't have to. Get the Jesus seat on whale's whenever possible.
2. Hand reading well. Range your opponents and don't add any hands to the range on later streets that weren't in there before.
3. Take notes (mental) on each player in your field and take lines based on the player. For example don't balance with a set by checking vs a calling station. Just bet, bet, bet.
4. Don't tilt. Your edge is smaller in the bigger games, so don't give away your hard earned bank roll.
5. Take every single edge you can/don't be results oriented. Making thinner and thinner value bets. If you take a thin line and it doesn't work, it doesn't mean that it's not correct. Really evaluate the play and determine the best course vs the appropriate range in the future.

I have a different take on #1 and it is because of the following:
In 5T you will find a different caliber of opponent than you've ever seen below (or most likely every seen below, you could be unlucky enough to've played the guy who crushed 2-4 though 5T online that plays 1/3 NL--but I only know one of those guys). These guys are really effin good. Guys who crushed online high stakes. Skilled live pros.

And one of them may quickly have your number.

Suggestions for dealing with this:
If he's a stud and LAG or worse a maniac, take a seat near his left. This is more important than crushing a whale. Whales are always in the pot and can be crushed from all over the table, but the last thing I want is to be intercepted when I try to isolate. To be facing big raises OOP whenever I try to get involved.

I would also advise game-selecting more aggressively, esp when moving up.
I would rather sit at Juicy! 2-5 game than a 5T game with no whales, some bad rocks, and some stud lags who are better than I am. I've seen some 5T games where I feel I'm not strong enough against the field to be involved.

Nice bump bro.

I agree that sometimes having position on better players is more important than having the best seat vs a whale, especially in a tough game with only 1-2 spots.
